Lots on here recently about kids having meltdowns and parents struggling at the start of the summer break.

My kids have been absolute knobs today, nothing major just general teenagerness.

Cheer us all up with some lovely braggy stories of something nice your kids have done.

My DDs friend’s parents had separated, it was difficult but amicable. My DD (11) was close to all the family. She gave my friend a big hug on a particularly bad day and then a second one, saying “this one is for your parents, they must be sad too”.

Walking home with kids - started chucking it downs. Kids had hoodies which I had obviously made them bring - I’d forgotten mine. Just said in passing “can’t believe it’s started to rain I’m getting soaked”. And my 9 year old took off his hoodie to give to me so I could put it over my head. The fact he just did it without thinking to be kind to me was just so lovely.

Just found out that while DH and I were are work today, DS(15) walked the hour round trip to town from our village to buy DD(13) her favourite chocolate with his own money because she's having a bit of a tough time atm.

minipie · 25/07/2023 20:29

DC were awful yesterday.

Today DC1 has emptied the dishwasher and done some 11+ prep without moaning, both helped me round the supermarket, DC1 did DC2’s hair which she loved.

We’ll gloss over the fact that DC1 hit DC2 for absolutely zero reason 🙄. She did apologise immediately and then buy DC2 some stationery with her pocket money to make up for it.

Oh and she told me my thighs were firmer than they used to be 😆 - I have been exercising!

ghostyslovesheets · 25/07/2023 20:34

DD1 (20) cooked sticky salmon, jasmine rice and broccoli last night for her self and her sisters - they loved it - tomorrow she's doing chicken fried rice

Jaberwokky · 25/07/2023 20:35

DS5 saw DN push his baby brother, not with any malice but the standard 18 month of experimenting and pushing boundaries. Before I even opened my mouth DS1 gave the baby his dummy and checked he was okay, then turned to DN and held his hands really gently and said ‘kind hands’ looking dead serious.

I may be redundant as a parent.

We spent all weekend sewing and cooking together and she loved being in the haberdashery section with all the women of all generations together being lovely to her. We then went to the Barbie film. She cried at the bit where the mum says, "mums stay still so their daughters can look back and see how far they've gone".

I felt like a combination of Mother Teresa and Martha Stewart with some Valerie Singleton thrown in.

It won't last but it's a happy place.

HaventTheyGrown · 25/07/2023 20:42

Mine are older but eldest has just gone away on holiday with friends and before he left l heard him say to youngest "Look after Mum".

ApocalypseNowt · 25/07/2023 20:42

DD1 made a Victoria sponge & DD2 is basically my tea lady.

Anonymous20232023 · 25/07/2023 20:42

Left my DS(11) and DS(9) home alone for 3 hours yesterday as I had to go to a work meeting. When I got back, there were baking utensils in the sink and neither boy was hungry. I asked why and turns out 11yr old had made protein balls (no hot things/ovens etc.. involved, don't panic!) for him and his brother. V cute and brother looked chuffed to have been treated by his big bro :) 🩷

Ds only got 1 negative behaviour point all year at school (1st year high school) and that was as his homework book was not signed. He did not need to be asked to do his homework all year as he just got on with it and his report was excellent effort across the board and estimated grades he is aiming for is 7-9s across all subjects except drama, pe, re and dt where he is aiming for 6-7s

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 25/07/2023 20:48

DS1 evicted the spider from the bath. I didnt even ask him too, he just did it because he knows I'm terrified. (DS2 OTOH just asked me if I knew it was there and told me it only had 6 legs)

But the nicest thing they've ever done was about 4 years ago. My now ex DP had come home from work and told me he was leaving. It was totally out of the blue. He'd been WhatsApping me all day about the child free weekend we had planned. He left and I just stood there in tears. My amazing lovely DC put their arms around me and one of them said "I'm so sorry mummy. You can be sad. But you'll be OK again. We were always great with just the 3 of us. We'll be great again" (I'd previously been a single parent for 7 years)
My heart melted. And they're right. We're more than great with just the 3 of us.

My teenagers (19,18 & 15) dont often poke their heads out of their rooms very often when they're at home but they always offer to make me and OH a cup of tea when they do.

My now 6 yo DD has been desperate to play on the playstation/pc for some time, apparently ALL her friends are playing minecraft or roblox etc. She was overjoyed to finally get Minecraft for her birthday recently, and the older 3 set up a private server for just the 4 of them and they all play on there with her, she's sooo happy about it I cant even tell you lol.

And my youngest is an absolute lovebug, literally love bombing me all day every day. His latest compliment to me is 'You're my best girl' (repeated about 50 times a day) It sounds so 'Happy Days' when he says it, it never fails to make me smile :)

My 14 year old is an absolute delight, I’m so lucky! He cooks for us every night, I can’t remember the last time I had to cook. Today he has looked after our friends’ little boys while they did an activity with the girls at the village playing fields. He took them inside when some other teenager were swearing and playing “inappropriate” (in his words) music and took them to the shop to buy them sweets with his own money from his Saturday job.

Yesterday, I was starving after work as I didn’t get a second for lunch and when I got home I was about to make myself some cereal before I had to go to a meeting, he told me to sit down for a bit and he’d make it for me. It’s only a little thing but he’s always so thoughtful.

QuiteEnoughOfThat · 27/07/2023 18:57

@Idratherbepaddleboarding Your son sounds sooo lovely ❤️

britespark1 · 27/07/2023 19:01

Eldest Cooke’s lunch twice this week and the youngest donated his pocket money to the local animal sanctuary 😍they’re alright really I suppose!

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 27/07/2023 19:02

Left home 😂🤣

Only kidding (sort of) 😁

PumpkinPie2016 · 27/07/2023 19:10

I will preface this by saying I only have one kid - a son, aged 9. So, no squabbling possible 😂

He has been lovely though - I am currently full of a cold and he has been giving me lots of lovely hugs.

He also helped carrying things in town today.

We had a lovely trip on the train to another town on Monday and had a lovely time.

takealettermsjones · 27/07/2023 19:10

I was holding baby and struggling to open something one handed, and my 3yo said "do you need me to do it?" and took the packet off me and did it for me.

HollyBookBlue · 27/07/2023 19:15

Last month DD (11) made me a cuppa and brought to me when I was WFH completely un asked. First time she's made me a cuppa! I know it was a month ago, but I'm never going to forget that one!

Yesterday she surprised me by making my bed for me, it looked beautiful! pillows were plumped, duvet turned down at the top

OneMoreCookieMonster · 27/07/2023 19:27

Today and everyday my dc 8 is a super star. Today, put a load of laundry on, helped with the shopping and pushed the stroller while I fed baby on the move and then baby had one of those "I'm over stimulated and will let the whole world know" meltdowns. Screaming for the rest of the shopping. Dc loaded the conveyor belt, used my card to pay and helped with the packing while I was trying to many things one handed.

Came home and dc rewarded with ps5 time and all the snacks in the world.

Baby sighed and just went to sleep for a 3 h nap!

I got to cook and eat dinner baby free.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 27/07/2023 19:45

My younger dd turned 5. She got £20 in a bday card and when we spoke about irdetinf chinese gor tea as a treat she asked if she could pay🤗We didn't let her but a very kind thought!

Fluffylittlepup · 27/07/2023 19:49

My son joined the RAF when most of his friends were getting into heroin. No input from a father, just me as a single mum, a decision he made himself.

OlympicProcrastinator · 27/07/2023 20:04

We went to the library yesterday and didn’t know they had a section with puzzles. Proper grown up ones and a large table. My DD’s 5 & 7 chose one and the 3 of us sat there for a good hour doing this puzzle.

I was surprised that they concentrated on it, that they really enjoyed and also how much I did. It was a lovely thing for us to do together and I’ll be getting some puzzles for Christmas pressies for them now.
