. . . would be me, and only me, with a fully loaded kindle in a comfortable hotel with good 24h room service, virtually anywhere in the world, in or near a small market town or within walking distance of restaurants, maybe a view of some mountains. A pool wouldn’t hurt.

You?

@WeAreTheHeroes a few years ago we played a band show in a nice small German town in a lovely theatre. The whole town was based around a lovely wellness centre and lake where people went to recuperate after operations and illnesses . The town was very very pleasant. Apparently this was very common in Germany for 2 weeks or so . If anyone tries to knock places like Germany I always remember this and the fact that one of our crew members (British) who had an accident was seen, sorted and out within an hour and a half and had to attend for follow up the next day. It was incredibly impressive.

Same but access to a market with amazing fresh produce and cooking facilities in that gorge apartment with sea and pool views (and balcony)

Yep. Sounds perfect. Peace. No over-complicating of dinner options or angst at less than 100% perfect service from hotel staff. Bliss.

I'm having my ideal holiday right now

I've got a house to myself. Fully stocked book case with a mixture of old favourites and some new, unread books.
Big balcony overlooking a lovely garden. Swimming pool.
Short walk to a quiet beach.

Decent Internet so I can keep in touch with DH and my young adult dd.
DH asked if I was bored yesterday because it had rained all day but I had enjoyed the peace.

Howmanysleepsnow · 26/07/2023 07:55

I’d like a cabin in the rainforest by the beach in Costa Rica. I’d read books on the balcony morning and evening while half watching the wildlife, stroll down to the beach for swimming, AI restaurant for meals and go on adventures (riding, cloud forest zip wire, jungle trek, whitewater rafting, horse riding, boat trips, snorkelling). Wine and books in the evening. DH and DC would come, no one would be bored and no one would interrupt my reading time except to point out the sloths!

A full week in Amsterdam, children at home with trusted relative, few thousand €.
Starting every morning earlyish with breakfast out, pancakes or pastries usually, then on to sampling the local plant cafes for a few hours. Quick lunch and back to the hotel for a very much needed midday nap. Then in the afternoon we'd do excursions or museum visits. Boat trips, the sex museum, Vondelpark, even just wandering around the tourist shops and along the canals. Back to the hotel to get changed for a fancy dinner at a posh restaurant in the city, and afterwards we'd almost definitely pop by another cafe if we weren't too tired.

I absolutely love Amsterdam, by far my favourite city in the world, and we had a few extremely enjoyable romantic trips out before kids. I have some beautiful, hilarious memories.
Would love to experience that again for a week before landing back to reality! And when our kids are grown up we will be out there every year for sure!

I do prefer European city breaks as don't cope well in the heat at all.

I have that place in Majorca where I jump on a plane once twice a year and switch off from everyone! Book ,patio overlooking the sea,sun umbrella and chilled bottle of wine ! It’s my happy place .

That sounds like bliss. Is it your own place? I would love a holiday home!

cariadlet · 26/07/2023 10:38

@HoHowmanysleepsnow I'm in Costa Rica right now.
No wildlife to see from the balcony except butterflies and hummingbirds but I can hear the howler monkeys.

Mmm I also want access to hiking and a warm sea now, just in case I feel like it.

Does anywhere fit this bill?

I am see you in a contemporary lakeside Austrian hotel, OP, with swimming, restaurants and mountain walks.

HerRoyalNotness · 26/07/2023 10:53

A couple people i know have done parts of the el Camino, now loads of posts come up on FB. I rather fancy doing that alone with no whinging DC and sighing H. Or a wellness retreat in the mountains with hiking, kayaking etc. A summer camp for adults if you like.

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2023 10:57

I’d be somewhere hot on my own, big upstairs balcony where I can watch the sea and the people.
Near a town for wandering, some interesting sights nearby. Room service for when I can’t be arsed to go out.
Private pool on one side of my accommodation and a shared pool on the other if I fancy some company.
Daily massages.
OMG I need a solo holiday 😭

QueefQueen80s · 26/07/2023 10:59

Yes.. The best holiday would be only me. No talking beyond people who work there. Books, pool, beach, all inclusive

I read an article about a house Lenny Krabitz owns in Brazil, all fantastic decor, tropical surroundings and laid back luxury.. I’d like to go there, please, with a chef to serve fabulous food and horseriding for an adrenaline rush

No unfortunately not but its a place we found years ago and I book direct with the owners. Like I said it is my Happy Place .Would buy it in a heartbeat if it was for sale..sadly probably way out of our financial reach !

thecatsthecats · 26/07/2023 12:06

I went to Lapland, to a cabin in the woods, alone.

I saw the Northern Lights, I ate eggs for breakfast every day, I finished writing my book, and I went to see Santa all by myself too.

Perfect.

Batiqueattic · 25/07/2023 19:21

Yup but by the sea please. And a market town.

I'm with you

TomAllenWife · 26/07/2023 12:11

Same!
Little balcony, lots of books, my doggy, cheese, meats, wine and I'd be in heaven

DahliaMacNamara · 26/07/2023 12:51

I'll go with a good like-minded friend. We'll have our own rooms, with balcony and a view of either sea or lake and mountains. We spend most days alone doing our own thing, me just reading and gazing at the view, then in the evening we go for a long chatty delicious dinner. A lovely stroll afterwards, then back to the hotel to laugh ourselves silly over a bottle or two of wine.

ShowOfHands · 26/07/2023 12:56

Train going through rolling countryside, snow capped mountains, coast roads. Whatever. Changing but beautiful vistas. Buffet car with a selection of dishes, no waiter service or dining cars. Notebooks to scribble in, books to read, maybe a sketchpad. Probably a month. Could stop every few days to explore a market town or a spring or a whimsical museum.

It doesn't exist I'm sure. Train holidays are all marketed as for rich people, with 5 course meals, waiters and braying strangers. I just want to be left alone. I don't mind nodding at people or having a little chat with a curious person with a tale to tell. But they then need to leave.

ScribblingPixie · 26/07/2023 13:08

@ShowOfHands, have a look at seat61.com - best train travel guide ever and lots of trips don't seem expensive. Maybe there's something that'll be perfect for you.

Denisthemenis · 26/07/2023 13:50

Me, partner in luxury hotel in the French Alps in the summer. No heatwave though. All inclusive so no food prep. Teens at home in UK.
Walking, relaxing, reading, cycling, maybe a few trips exploring area and ski lifts .

I feel exactly the same about ‘my’ Yorkshire cottage, but sadly it looks like the owners have recently sold it to a big company 🙁

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 27/07/2023 16:14

I love reading but I think if I'm on holiday I'd like to get out and see things in the country I've travelled to, so I'd save reading for at home.

My ideal trip would be to visit various animal rescues in different countries such as the elephant hospital in Thailand, the kangaroo rescue in Alice Springs, Australia and the big cat rescue in Namibia etc. There are also some closer to home I'd like to visit too. There are some veterinary care busman's holidays too.

If I inherit my parents' house I intend to sell it and fund these various trips. My partner is boring and doesn't want to go so each trip I'd take a different child with me (I have 6, all grown up except youngest who's 15).

Onesailwait · 27/07/2023 16:29

My perfect holiday would be a week at home ALONE!!. I would pay for my family to go somewhere lovely. I would spend the week sleeping in, then a walk in the beach or a kayak in the ocean, read, cook lovely food & order in. Enjoy the pool hot tub in peace. Then sit by the fire pit ( only the propane one we are under a fire ban) with a whiskey and a big fat joint.
