Being brutally honest, my ideal holiday

. . . would be me, and only me, with a fully loaded kindle in a comfortable hotel with good 24h room service, virtually anywhere in the world, in or near a small market town or within walking distance of restaurants, maybe a view of some mountains. A pool wouldn’t hurt.

You?

Would love to just be in my house, on my own, a kitchen stocked with fresh bread, butter and pate, some kind of hypnosis that enabled me to switch off and stop stressing about work and with access to a netflix where my DH hadn't skewed the algorithm to his kind of shite content.

WhatADrabCarpet · 25/07/2023 20:13

Giant green hills, not Rocky Mountains please.
And a sea view.
And a vast second hand bookshop.
And some arty/crafty shops.
Some lovely restaurants/cafes.
A bustling market town.
A dentist/doctors nearby just in case.

If I have vast hills for a view at the front, I'd like rolling fields out the back , please, with sheep.

I want it to be remote but with a Tesco / other Express no more than 5 miles away.

Userengage · 25/07/2023 20:14

Same as you OP but with a beach view, gym, lap pool and sun. Chilled wine, cocktails and room service. I’ll also have Alexa so I can get her to play my favourite tunes.

PeloMom · 25/07/2023 20:15

Same but also great weather and private pool.

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 25/07/2023 20:17

I do this too on holiday
I wake early .. walk along beach
Read my kindle in a bit of shade all day

Shower , slather on loads of aftersun and go eat
Back on balcony to continue reading
Might do a market one day but that's about it
Heaven

Ahhh I just had a conversation like that with an old friend.

So I'm in!

However my family deserves a holiday too! This is what's in store for them at a different resort:

DH - DIY course for how to build a cellar
(He already built a conservatory, extension and converted the garage.)

DS (14) sailing school from 6am - 11pm

DD (19) course on how to be be independent from parents- I am currently her best mate!!

DDog #1 - tennis courts with ball throwing machine

DDog #2 - Treadmill in the gym, (he can't run, to save his life!)

Curiosity101 · 25/07/2023 20:26

Quite different to most here but it's either DisneyWorld, Universal and SeaWorld on Orlando... Probably with DH but not the kids.

Or a fun activity holiday with loads of cool nature/science things to do. Normally aim for one 'activity' a day with plenty of sleep and good local food. That would ideally be with DH and the kids but also with accommodation that has a good kids club and trustable baby sitting service so we could also catch up on sleep and have some downtime. We've been to Iceland and Amsterdam in the past. We had trips planned to inter rail around Europe, particularly to go on the Bernina Express 🤩. We also planned to travel to Norway, travel to Barcelona (cable cars, science museum and aquarium) and also to go to Madeira. We've not ended up doing most of those trips yet, but will do in the future.

I like busy holidays, so long as I get plenty of sleep.

What a great idea to think up one for each family member. I love that the dogs get their ideal holiday too.

I’ve just had quite a busy but brilliant holiday with loved ones in southern Europe and that’s what got me thinking how much I’d also love to take a holiday for one. I could even secretly work without anyone telling me off for bringing my laptop on holiday.

For me: multiple locations over 3 weeks, stunning views, enjoyable short walks, preferably some historical towns to mooch about, food markets and endless endless cafes and eateries. Hopefully some streetfood too. (With an endless budget and no weight gain).
Sunshine, a pool, and a comfy sofa or lounger. Oh and some excellent wine (says the 33 weeks pregnant woman)

BIWI · 25/07/2023 20:39

I did this a few years ago now - seriously stressed out with work; DH had a new contract so couldn't take any time off for a holiday.

I had 5 days in an AI hotel in Barbados. I was upgraded to a suite when I arrived (no idea why, other than it was a hotel we'd been to several times before). Complimentary bottle of rum, and canapés delivered to my suite each evening before dinner.

Lovely pools to choose from, with plenty of sun loungers/umbrellas available. Hotel right on the beach.

Fully loaded kindle (I think I read the whole of the Game of Thrones books!), good WIFI, and my laptop and iPad as well as my phone.

Went on an island trip one day, but apart from that just read and lazed (and ate and drank!).

It was bliss, and I hugely recommend it.

LuckySantangelo35 · 25/07/2023 20:41

so refreshing to hear people talk like this rather than usual - “
‘oh I can’t be parted from my husband and kids for even a weekend’ nonsense that you usually see on here

gavisconismyfriend · 25/07/2023 20:41

I’d like a swim up pool please, also a private bit of beach with cocktails available as and when required. A proper sunlounger with a capacious parasol. Might need audiobooks as not sure I can even be bothered to open my eyes!

Faceplantagain · 25/07/2023 20:44

I'm an introvert, who lives by myself, but I do get lonely sometimes. So my ideal holiday is one of these (both of which I've done):
Going to an interesting European City with a small group of friends. Where we stay in a nice villa (and all have our own rooms), can do some wandering around by ourselves, but meet up for lovely meals.
Going on a small group walking/sightseeing holiday (as these get me to more remote parts of the world), but making sure that I have a single room so I can retreat, and also having a few extra days before or after for a bit more solitary time.

gogomoto · 25/07/2023 20:44

Quite keen on a cruise myself, world cruise 120 days or so sounds good but we are also considering trying to ride overland to Jakarta (from where we will ship the bike to Perth) just a few wars in our way currently

PTSDBarbiegirl · 25/07/2023 20:45

thatsn0tmyname · 25/07/2023 20:05

Sounds lush. Can I add a 3 stone magical weight loss for me before I get there?

I'll join you for the pre holiday miracle!
I'd like a very clean, luxurious hotel, private pool for me, airy large white room, DP for day company and a puppy to pat and play with for each of us, my DC there in adjoining villa, DP will sleep there too. A personal decision maker for all meals, music, books to read. Ahhhhhhhh......

ImNotReallySpartacus · 25/07/2023 20:46

Sounds great, but I would swap the pool for a car and chauffeur.

saveforthat · 25/07/2023 20:47

I once stayed in a cottage in Shawford, near Winchester with my partner and dog. DP was on a course during the day, DDOG and I would go on long walks. Some days I would walk along the river to Winchester and DDOG would swim all the way there. Went into coffee shops etc. Alone all day, company in the evening. I still describe it as one of the best weeks of my life.

tobee · 25/07/2023 20:47

Just me for 2 weeks. Somewhere to swim off rocks, 1 week exclusive spa/healthy eating and hiking, yachting or similar. Week 2 just the books and the view with lots of freshly cooked fish and no cooking or clearing up. Massive library and window seats overlooking the sea. Very limited internet signal and old fashioned luxury.

BUT a full time house keeper for my family so everything shipshape and Bristol fashion at home for my return.

ChilliPB · 25/07/2023 20:52

I’m the opposite. Multiple locations over a few weeks - I usually travel around and would get bored spending too long in one place. Sitting indoors reading is something I can do at home!

Ooh yes and plenty of old black & white movies to watch of an evening.

Brk · 25/07/2023 20:53

Are you my husband?! 😂

Mine would be an activity holiday with snorkelling, boats, horse riding, jungle tours and exploring some ancient historical monuments.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/07/2023 20:57

Sounds good to me!!

purplecorkheart · 25/07/2023 21:03

I would be happy to skip the pool in exchange for a hotplate and a saucepan. I have been to so many fish markets on holidays with stunning shell fish that you buy at the market cheaply along with a bulb of garlic. A loaf of crusty bread, a glass of wine, a good book and I am more than happy.

Chocolateandteayummy · 25/07/2023 21:05

My friend done exactly this earlier this year for a week. She had the most amazing chill time. Spoiled her though and she found the antics of her recent family holiday abroad particularly tough with DH and 2 teenagers in tow.
