Is the Barbie movie not much fun or relatable if you aren't a very attractive successful woman?

Not sure if I'm explaining myself properly. But if I've never been super pretty or successful at anything, will I probably feel kinda alienated by the film?

Love Greta Gerwig's other films and think Barbie looks fun, but unsure if I'm the 'right sort of woman' who will really get it, as maybe the issues just don't really apply to me?!

Don't want to leave the cinema feeling like I'm back at high school Grin

The film isn’t like many people expect it to be . It is more aimed at adults and explores stereotype roles in society .
I think you’ll be surprised once you’ve seen it !

Brexile · 25/07/2023 19:13

No idea, but the Barbie superfans tended to be the nerdy unpopular girls (speaking from experience here) so it would be strange to alienate them. I was surprised to read all the rave reviews in the Guardian, which is usually pretty po-faced about anything too frivolous (read: female) or not sufficiently right-on. I'm going to see it with teenage DDs when it comes out over here.

This. I really enjoyed it.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 25/07/2023 19:16

I think it could appeal to all sorts of women. It’s about female empowerment and challenging the patriarchy, not about perfect looks.

Paythosebitchesnomind269 · 25/07/2023 19:16

I think it is actually surprising people, it's not what you imagine

Were they? What were the cooler kids into? Or do you mean they just weren't into it as much?

Singleandproud · 25/07/2023 19:17

Yep, this film isn't for small children's it's very much for teens and adults due to the themes explored, it really is fantastic and whilst I had seen the marketing had no idea of the plot before I saw it and was pleasantly surprised.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/07/2023 19:20

Watch the trailer or read some reviews. It's very clever and funny.

fireflyloo · 25/07/2023 19:21

I really enjoyed it and it is really clever at exploring stereotypical roles based on sex. It's also quite funny in parts.

converseandjeans · 25/07/2023 19:23

I was a tomboy growing up & never had dolls & never had an interest in Barbie or anything girly. I'm definitely not glam now. We went as a family to see it & really enjoyed it.

Joey2323 · 25/07/2023 19:36

I would say it is the complete opposite.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/07/2023 19:41

The real woman in the film is not especially successful or glamorous. I found the story around her and her daughter quite poignant. I wasn't expecting that.

TheCyclingGorilla · 25/07/2023 19:45

I'm very much a Plain Jane Tomboy and I went with my daughter who is 16. We really enjoyed it, especially the moral and themes. I was never a dolly enthusiast but I thought this film was deeper than I expected. I loved America Ferreira's speech in it (no spoilers) and the Ken dance number. There were kids of about 7 or 8 there but they were bored. It resonates much more with teens & adults, imo

I feel like this sort of gives the film away so feel free to scroll on and ignore me…

I found the film was very much ‘just being ourselves is enough, it’s great to be successful but being ‘average’ is OK too!’ The whole ‘I am Kenough’ thing.

Periodschmeriod · 25/07/2023 20:40

Interesting.

My immediate response to this is, "what on earth do Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie or any of the beautiful cast know about being average?!"

To be in their position, talented and successfully working in Hollywood, they are by definition not average? IMO.

I don't know, I'm probably missing the point!

Helen Mirren, in the voice over, made a point to that effect. Honestly, give it a try. If you don't like it, fair enough, but it's not what you are thinking it is.

WeetabixTowels · 25/07/2023 21:10

It’s brilliant for all women.

That is exactly why I suspect I won't like it after all. Ultra wokeness just... no. I can't muster interest.

Unless it's very funny. Is Barbie movie quite funny?

Brexile · 25/07/2023 21:14

@HorseyMel The cool girls were less into Barbie/Sindy and gave up playing with them sooner, at around 10 years old when they considered themselves practically grown up. I still have nearly all of my dolls and I'm 46 :)

This, that Helen Mirren voice-over comment was a laugh out loud moment for both me ( middle aged and plain) and DH ( old and wrinkly) We had huge fun.
Not perfect but def.worth seeing.

Ah yes, the cool kids had options other than dolls at a much younger age. One was dating a 6th former in Yr 8. Another got pregnant - in the Yr 7 summer hols I think.

I was always into Lego rather than dolls. Still am. You should see my Lego medieval and hobbit MOCs!

Moneynewpence · 25/07/2023 21:23

@lljkk

Ofgs female empowerment is not 'ultra woke" whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean. Unless you're happy living a 1950s life.
What a nonsensical comment.

No, it's at best mildly amusing.

I didn't like it. I watch a lot of films (I'm in the cinema at least once a week) so it's not like I don't understand the messaging or recognise the other films it's nodding to, but it was just a deeply bizarre and slightly dull 2 hours. It really reminded me of Josie and the Pussycats from the early 2000s with a dose of Clueless and the kind of jokes you'd find in one of the Lego movies.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 25/07/2023 21:26

Go and see it and I think you'll be surprised.
I had no intention of going but after my dd (18) saw it with friends she came back and wanted to go again with me! Mother / dsughter theme is strong. It's a thought provoking film which is great fun too.

Changes17 · 25/07/2023 21:27

DD12 made me go. It was great! Neither of us have ever had a barbie. Though I had a sindy…
