Is the Barbie movie not much fun or relatable if you aren't a very attractive successful woman?

Not sure if I'm explaining myself properly. But if I've never been super pretty or successful at anything, will I probably feel kinda alienated by the film?

Love Greta Gerwig's other films and think Barbie looks fun, but unsure if I'm the 'right sort of woman' who will really get it, as maybe the issues just don't really apply to me?!

Don't want to leave the cinema feeling like I'm back at high school Grin

People who've seen it, is it enjoyable for an 11yo? Dd is keen to see it but I can't decide if some of the themes are too adult from the synopses!

Yes if your 11 year old is clued up. No if they are expecting twee happy jolly barbie like the cartoons

@greenteaandmarshmallows thank you! Yes she is, she was never into the dolls but is very into girls taking over the world! 😆

My ds (17) enjoyed it (he and his friends were doing the Oppenbarbie thing) and he's neither very attractive or successful (yet) or a woman. He's almost convinced me to give it a go and on face value it's very much not my thing.

I found the film was very much ‘just being ourselves is enough, it’s great to be successful but being ‘average’ is OK too!’

Interesting.

My immediate response to this is, "what on earth do Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie or any of the beautiful cast know about being average?!"

To be in their position, talented and successfully working in Hollywood, they are by definition not average? IMO.

I don't know, I'm probably missing the point!

But in the film Margo's character feels inadequate against the other Barbies, so there's a point that even people we see as being perfect/better also have their own insecurities.

I'd take her and then discuss the film after

There were some good observations but nothing revolutionary.
I found some of the Ken moments funny.
One of the Barbies is a transwoman which was a bit incongruous.
Robbie was very good.

I’m bloody gorgeous and very successful and also a very educated cinema-goer (I go at least once a week) and Tarkovsky is my favourite director.
I loved it and even cried a little.

My unsuccessful, not very attractive female friend also loved it and cried. Barbie. The great leveller.
Go!

Yeah, I think there are some really deep points as well as the laugh-out-loud 'toxic masculinity' stuff.

I think one of the deeper points is Ken's reaction to the disenfranchisement of males in Barbie-land, an overreaction of toxic masculinity, which is happening in the world today. Andrew Tate anyone?

One of the Barbies is a transwoman which was a bit incongruous.

The actress said 'Barbie's don't have genitalia' and I think that's a valid point. She was playing a doctor and her biology was irrelevant to the character. There's no reason why that character couldn't be played by a transwoman. However, I actually thought a transwoman playing a Barbie was more apposite than she probably intended. Barbie is a fantasy woman based on a sex toy, she's not a messy real woman.

I do have a lovely son as well as daughters, who came with us. Is Alan all he gets?

Gosh yes, the most important thing in a film about women, for women, by women, whose subject matter is dolls, the MOST important thing is to make sure men are catered for. It's not like the rest of Hollywood predominately caters for men or anything. Men really never see themselves portrayed in films, bless them.

Also, Allan is bloody brilliant. DD's take on it was that Allan is the Barbie universe's Black Widow. High praise from DD.

It was really boring, seem to last forever.
It was very, how would I put it, if anyone here is on tiltok and have had these young teenager/early 20 y/o feminist, it was basically a collection of them.
Very, we women can do anything and need no men (still have male partners though🫨🤔) hype, but no substance.
I’m guessing this movie was aimed at this group mostly.

One part did made me laugh loudly:
When Barbie was crying she’s not pretty and the narrative said: ”note to filmakers, Margot Robbie is the wrong person to cast if you want to make this point.
That was excellent and true comment.
There’s so much bullshit how looks don’t matter/beauty comes from within, yet, it’s the pretty one who’s cast.
They should have talked more about pretty priviledge, but I’ll take what I get.
Ps: does anyone remember the awful ted talk where to woman speaker, headlined ”Looks aren’t everything, trust me I’m a model”.
Like how ignorant can one be?
So, at least this movie had little more awareness than that.
