Does anyone have the bad habit of reading Mumsnet instead of reading actual books?

I often have great intentions of sitting down and chilling out with a book, but inevitably end up on Mumsnet instead.
AIBU - no, I still read books.
AINBU - me too! Can't help it, '10 mins' turns into a lot longer

Yes! Mumsnet and (more embarrassingly) tiktok! I could happily rot infront of the Internet for hours 🤭😳

Johnisafckface · 25/07/2023 01:29

Me, I’m guilty of this. I used to read all the time but now even when I start reading a book about 15 mins later I’m back on mumsnet. Sadly Reading just doesn’t keep my interest like it used to.

Isittimeformynapyet · 25/07/2023 01:31

Yup. Guilty 😔

I used to read books too.

NotBotheredAnymore · 25/07/2023 01:31

Me. I have a huge stack of 2nd hand books awaiting my attention, with a handwritten list of more i would like to read (as recommended by mnetters) and yet here I am, reading your thread Sad

ImDuranDuran · 25/07/2023 01:42

Yes, same as @iLovee it's either MN or Tiktok.

I sit in work and visualise how my night is going to be once the baby is in bed; a lovely evening on the sofa with a nice book. The reality is I cannot be fucked and will spend 2 solid hours scrolling through mundane shit.

Loathe myself Grin

Epicstorm · 25/07/2023 01:45

You are not alone OP. Thought it was just me.

Beeswood · 25/07/2023 02:01

I'm like this too!

Rummikub · 25/07/2023 02:06

Me as welll.

I used to read loads. Always had a book or two on the go. Really enjoyed immersing myself.

Since having children I’ve not read a book in years!

I read mn instead.
It’s a bad habit.

TinaYouFatLard · 25/07/2023 02:08

Me. I hate the fact I do it.

Crumbcatcher · 25/07/2023 02:09

MN and tiktok are my social life since having kids. I would love to read but don't have the attention span anymore.

Timetochangetheoil · 25/07/2023 02:23

Ugh yep. Even have my half finished book on my lap and am ignoring it to post on your thread 🙈😂 ffs!

Same, having kids has fried my brain 😭

BigCheeseSandwich · 25/07/2023 02:29

Yes. With the added bad habit of reading MN right before bed, when I used to read books, which is terrible sleep hygiene.

Yep. I used to read a lot, now just don't bother.

Radiatorvalves · 25/07/2023 03:28

Guilty. I used to read loads on hols. Now too much SM and MN. 😳

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 25/07/2023 03:34

You are 'reading' though!

Holding up books to be the holy grail is a bit wet!

No, it's more like making inane chit chat with strangers at the bus stop! Sometimes you strike gold.

I'm flouncing in September with every intention of becoming a bookworm in a cosy autumnal way.

We'll see how that goes ...

ivycastle · 25/07/2023 05:52

I'm doing it right now.

This site is quite addictive and I dread to think how many hours I've sunk into it. I'd quite like to quit actually but I always end up coming back.

Don't be ridiculous. Reading mumsnet is not like reading a book. It doesn't nourish your mind, it's just a load of strangers ranting.

Beezknees · 25/07/2023 07:11

I've started reading again after not reading a book properly for years. I was made redundant recently so I have more time on my hands at the moment. I'm falling back in love with it.

LosingTheBelly · 25/07/2023 07:15

I belong to a bookclub and one woman has extremely different reading tastes to mine.

There have been times when i have abandoned the book and just looked up to see what MNetters say about it.

Many many times.

So to answer your question- yes i often read MN instead of books!!

Same re quitting.

I put myself on a MN diet last month- 30 mins limit morning and evening.

Then we went on holiday and I MNetted around the pool.

Time to diet again.

Point taken, but one of the reasons I read fiction is for psychological insights into people unlike me. I certainly get that every time I open MN!

Jujubes5 · 25/07/2023 07:23

I spend far too much time on MN.
But I am retired and I've decided it is partly because although books/ gardening/ etc etc keep me busy they don't really engage my brain enough. Whereas the posts on MN can be very interesting plus responding to a post takes a bit of thought, so I need a more interesting hobby that uses my brain. I wouldn't call sudoko etc interesting.

I get the FT online but although articles take a bit of reading and understanding I can't actually respond and possibly get a response to any post I make (I can post a comment but most are not responded to and not quickly).
