To think we have despicable, inhumane people running this country

The Home Secretary, one of the most powerful people in the country, is found to have broken the law by withholding £3 a WEEK to desperate people, including pregnant women and small children. How anyone can consider voting these monsters in again is just beyond my understanding.

The reference was to cocaine, not to America as such!

Or at least that's how I understood it...

Howpo · 24/07/2023 22:04

I doubt Suella is currently sat at home rubbing her hands together, whilst cackling that she has snatched a bag of apples away from a migrant family today. Disagree with the policies by all means, but the hyperbole and use of words like evil just seem so childish. There will have been reasoning behind the decision made

She did say she dreamed of migrants being sent to Rwanda and Jenrick recently ordered a childrens picture to be removed from a asylum centre.

When you look at Govt waste & failures in tax collection, i doubt very much £3 per week on a multi billion pound asylum bill is going to make any difference at all... but it looked good to some in this country.

Might be a better policy to offer to those who are skilled, the opportunity to work, whilst waiting years for their application to be processed?

Other countries do this, most notably Germany.

I wouldn't put it past her.

Hadalifeonce · 24/07/2023 22:13

Do we know if this was a direct ruling by the home secretary, or was the decision made by civil servants?

ssd · 24/07/2023 22:15

Unfortunately the UK seems to have plenty of utter c*s who this will appeal to.

I will suggest it was made by her over the objections of the civil service.

It's what they do :

Yes, I read this story and could hardly believe it.

What is quite frightening is that Braverman and Jenrick clearly believe these are vote-winning policies.

rwalker · 25/07/2023 07:35

The problem is we’re all outraged until we’re asked to fund the £3 the. That’s always down to someone else

as for other parties always quick to pick fault from the sidelines yet very NON COMITAL on solutions

Well some people would rather die than not vote Tory (which ironically the Tories arranged) - I discount them.

But then you have the "my precious" cohort that can be tempted with the faintest promise of a trinket a year. As seen elsewhere on this very esteemed platform.

And whilst £3 per person per week does sound like it would solve the CoL crisis overnight, it's infinitesimal in comparison to the amount being spent on boats, barges and barriers. With the Tories there is always enough money to punish the poor - which is the UKs growth industry at the moment. I can only imagine the panic at Tory central office last year when it seemed they were in danger of running out of the poor. Luckily they found Liz Truss, and production doubled overnight.

PermanentTemporary · 25/07/2023 08:21

Tbh if the food is so nutritionally poor that an additional £3 a day is required for adequate sustenance for pregnant women and children that is also frightening.

I've just been listening to a podcast about the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. It's not pretty.

What would you do if you were a traumatised woman detained against your will, not allowed to settle or work, with no information about when the poorly managed Home Office will actually process your asylum application, you and your children being fed minimal carbohydrate only?

They are positively begging the cohort to resort to crime, getting pregnant or both so that they can tell us 'it's their culture' and deport them while chatting racist shit to GB News.

I hate them.

PermanentTemporary · 25/07/2023 08:23

Just a reminder that immigration is at newly record levels under this government. I mean, I consider that a good thing, probably the only reason we still have an economy, but they're shit at what they're supposed to be doing while posturing about vitamins and wall decorations.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/07/2023 08:28

Yanbu of course, she is despicable, but isn't that what the electorate voted for?

The Suella style of dog whistle politics seems to play very well with a lot of people.

calmcoco · 25/07/2023 08:28

Yes they seem motivated mainly by negativity, it is so depressing having to wait for the next GE.

I don't want to be led by this government any longer, they've had a long stretch and have broken pretty much every service we had. Yet I still pay more tax!

Blackbyrd · 25/07/2023 08:40

Surely they can just extend the Healthy Start scheme to include asylum seekers. Pregnant women and children are by definition more in need of support and care regardless of status. However the scheme does need to be policed more as places like Iceland and corner shops accept the Healthy Start credits for any old crap
Whilst current levels of immigration are completely unsustainable, there needs to be more nuanced responses from central government. Schemes like the Rwanda one are completely unworkable and frankly embarrassing

We are asked to fund approx £3billion on these barges to house a few 100 people, so i don't really see your point? does the Govt ask the electorate when they want cash?

On solutions, its not Labours job to provide fixes for the Govts self created problems, they wanted Brexit and Brexit is why we have no returns agreement with the EU, why else do you think this boats crisis has started? we didn't see any of this pre the UK officially leaving the EU, economic migrants knew they could be returned plus now there is no political benefit for the French to really crack down on the boats.

@GunkyAndGungey touché. Thanks for explaining that. It was a bit obtuse to me.

lavenderlou · 24/07/2023 20:51

Also, who are they actually trying to appeal to with these policies? The sort of people who actually begrudge child refugees a few pounds a week are surely few and far between even amongst the anti-immigration brigade. A few hardcore Kipper votes aren't going to win them the next election.

Sadly I have come across quite a number of people who would cheerfully deny anything to refugees of any kind. I suspect these views may be more extensive than just a few kippers.

Barleycat · 25/07/2023 09:59

They're tories what do you expect. All they ever care about is helping their rich mates get richer and keeping the rest of us in our place.

Havanananana · 25/07/2023 12:31

Surely it can't be this Suella Braverman?

Suella Braverman has 'milked' the expenses system to get taxpayers to foot her household bills while living rent-free with her parents when not there.
An investigation by the Mirror found the Home Secretary had claimed nearly £25,000 in five years for her London house. She claimed the expenses to cover energy and other costs for her main home while staying rent-free at her parents’ house when she visits her constituency, the investigation revealed.

This is within the rules but not 'in the spirit' of them, one MP said.

What's worse is that that plenty of people are still happy to vote tory, despite everything.

Weddingpuzzle · 25/07/2023 13:06

A pp said that asylum seekers whose claim is currently being processed and are living in a hotel get £45 a week. I think the poster misread that figure, as that is for people who live in shared accomodation. If you live in a hotel whilst your claim is being processed you are entitled to £9.10 a week.
