To want a microwave that doesn’t ceiling burn/peel ?

AliceMay55 · 24/07/2023 10:19

We are on our 100th microwave. Each lasts about 2-3yrs. We are binning perfectly working microwaves only because the inside the ceiling starts to get burnt and peels. I bought a plastic lid for covering food, but people in our house never use it.
Is there a way out? Are there better quality microwaves that cope better?

It's peeling off due to the condensation from things being cooked/heated up in it (especially uncovered) and just being left there, so unless you can change the behaviour of those who use it (I know some foods give off more moisture than others, so I will wipe down the inside and door of my microwave and leave the door ajar so it can dry after cooking such foods in it), it's probably going to keep happening regardless of what model microwave you buy.

I have had my current microwave nearly 6 years and it's still in pretty good condition because I take care of it.

Buy one with a stainless steel interior.

And be more assertive with the lid thing.

avaviolet · 24/07/2023 10:39

If you don't maintain and use an appliance properly then it's not going to last. The people using it need to change their behaviour. Cover everything you cook in it, clean it regularly and don't leave things sat in there.

Ours is stainless steel inside and about a million years old

AliceMay55 · 24/07/2023 10:46

thanks all! I’ll be super grateful if you kindly post the make and model of your long lasting microwaves.

Lidl special

Batalax · 24/07/2023 10:53

Eh, I don’t recognise this at all. And we owned one before they became commonplace. What on earth are you doing to them?

Batalax · 24/07/2023 10:54

Maybe because all ours have been stainless steel perhaps?

Clymene · 24/07/2023 10:57

I have a sharp microwave. It's old and the display no longer works properly. And it's not stainless steel inside.

No damage to the ceiling.

This is something the people who use the microwave are doing, it's not a problem with the microwave.

Lethalinformation · 24/07/2023 10:58

That's just dreadful , what a waste

CindersAgain · 24/07/2023 11:00

Ours has a ceramic enamel interior and seems indestructible. We don’t treat it particularly well, although I do leave the door open sometimes to get rid of smells. I don’t notice it getting damp inside at all.

I also have an old microwave, not stainless steel and it just goes and goes and goes - no issue with the ceiling at all (and I never cover anything in it).

krazipan · 24/07/2023 11:09

We always leave the door open after using it so the condensation doesn't rust the inside.

Yellowlegobrick · 24/07/2023 11:10

Are you buying very cheap appliances?

We've got an integrated microwave and its metal inside and has lasted years but it was far more pricey than some.

Iloveanicegarden · 24/07/2023 11:12

I've had several microwaves and have never had this problem. I don't take special care but I do use a plastic lid as it stops splattering. I clean it every now and then as it gets a bit grubby

JanesBlond · 24/07/2023 11:13

I’ve never heard of this happening! We have a Panasonic NN-SD27HSBPQ apparently and it is stainless steel inside, no peeling or burning. We don’t always use a lid either.

Reallybadidea · 24/07/2023 11:15

Ours is like this, it was really cheap when we got it about 7 years ago. But it still works, nobody can see apart from me if I look inside and I always cover food to microwave it anyway, so no danger of bits falling in the food. It works fine so why does it need replacing? What am I missing?

justlass · 24/07/2023 11:17

I've had this problem too, although it's under the turntable where it starts to crack and peel. I ALWAYS leave the door open so it can dry out, there's only me using it, but it still happens. I can't afford the really expensive ones, so yes they're enamel white inside.

ClaraBourne · 24/07/2023 11:20

Ours is like this too. Not the top, but round the door. It still works fine though. I do cover nearly everything but the comment about condensation makes me think of jacket potatoes which I haven't covered ever!

Is us still safe to use ? It's peeling and rusty 😬

The one I had where DP turned out to have been using an abrasive sponge to clean it once he'd allowed stuff to splatter and dry on it for ages (I don't often use it myself) started sparking when switched on.

Current one is six years old and is a Swan. So was the one that had to be replaced. It's just wiped down after each use now for condensation and splatters are cleaned off at the same time.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 24/07/2023 11:23

I had a Brother combi for 20+ years then a Panasonic for 10 which I only rehired as I got a built in with a new kitchen, never had anything like this happen, you need to train the users to use it properly or not at all

AgentJohnson · 24/07/2023 11:24

I can’t imagine what these ‘people’ are doing to have what you say is happening to your microwave. If people in my house were misusing an appliance that required it to be replaced more frequently, they wouldn’t be using it! Lock it away or have a rota so that everyone cleans it.

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/07/2023 11:25

Never had this problem with any microwave ever. Had my current Panasonic one for 11 years and it's as good as new. My father's old National one is still going at age 25 years and doesn't have that problem either.

Even the charity where I work which has a super cheapo old microwave (takes about 3 hours to cook anything it's so old and low powered) doesn't have this problem.

What on earth are you doing to it OP?!

minipie · 24/07/2023 11:26

We have a Neff one and before that a Russell Hobbs both stainless steel inside, zero ceiling damage

TheNoodlesIncident · 24/07/2023 11:30

Ours is a Panasonic, bought around the turn of the century (I recall buying it as a got a new Hoover washing machine at the same time, it was a big spend for me) and is still going strong.

The frame around the door is starting to unstick and I have stuck it back down with sticky tape and we have replaced the light bulb once, but that's all in 20 plus years of happy microwaving.

Ours is a Dimension 4 Turbo Bake with catalytic clean, no idea of the model number, but it owes us nothing and I'd recommend something similar rather than buying cheap ones that don't last. We don't always cover food inside it and it makes no difference at all, apart from more splatter. I do wipe the inside if it's got very steamy in use, but everyone does that, right..?
