I thought summers are meant to be getting hotter

They are on average. Wasn't it the hottest June on record? And then remember the heatwave last July. It doesn't mean every single summer will be hot all summer long.

Raindropbattle · 22/07/2023 10:00

I understand it to be getting warmer and wetter as the general trend. That will be on average over time rather than hot every day.

ToxicBiennial · 22/07/2023 10:04

We’re stuck under a wide jet stream at the moment in the uk. It’s blocking the weather and contributing to making it very warm in Europe and colder, rainy and windy here.

It’s horrible and depressing. I know I shouldn’t say it but I prefer the warmer weather. (To a point).

It looks to be wet and breezy and cold into August here and for at least the first week to

This

It's not that simple....

Swansandcustard · 22/07/2023 10:11

Over the coming years the extreme weather episodes will be more and more frequent…the world will flip between unmanageable heat and torrential floods. ‘Pleasant weather’ will not be a thing.

SiobahnRoy · 22/07/2023 10:15

Don’t confuse climate with weather.

NuffSaidSam · 22/07/2023 10:17

Erm....I'm not sure if you've heard of Italy or Spain or Greece or America? Worth a Google if you're looking for evidence that summers are getting hotter.

Kitkatcatflap · 22/07/2023 10:18

I am in Sweden if has rained every day for the last two weeks. Prior to that we had some lovely summer days. Today it is grey, cloudy predicted rain and I am wearing a jumper.

Norugratsatall · 22/07/2023 10:18

According to Greenpeace, 6 July 2023 was officially the hottest day ever on earth.

lavenderlou · 22/07/2023 10:21

The global climate is the hottest in record. That doesn't mean it's hot everywhere.

Gerrataere · 22/07/2023 10:23

Well since half of Europe is looking at Death Valley type temperatures, I think it’s evidently getting hotter. The weather we’re having in the UK for the same reasons, isn’t it’s strange that rather than a balance instead we’re in October type weather whilst our neighbours are in a melting bowl? It’s all for the same reason.

Windchimeswinter · 22/07/2023 11:43

It's not good is it 😭
It's either baking or horrid wind and rain and no in-between anymore.
I do find it hard to understand tbh

The more the media keep going on about the extreme weather, the more sceptical I get. Honestly the way they go on, you'd have thought summers had never occurred before. I heard a woman on the news say that in the UK we may not be able to have summer weddings because it will be so hot and we will have to paint our roofs white. Everytime we hit 25 degrees, the weather charts are coloured in bright red. Its pathetic

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 22/07/2023 11:48

The last 2 or 3 summers have been hotter than normal in the UK, we have short memories when it comes to hot weather!

Just because July is giving much needed rain and cooler temperatures doesn't mean we haven't been hugely affected by global warming recently. It may not be the nicest July weather right now, but we really need it - many of our reservoirs were still in drought status a few months ago and wildlife has really suffered with the hotter temperatures and drier winters.

Our climate is moving away from predictable season weather and towards anomalous periods of unusual/ extreme weather regardless of season.

Me too OP, never had a summer this cold. It's usually hot from April.. It didn't get warm til June. And now July cool and rainy.
So April/May/July I've been wearing a coat and boots, full duvet on bed, heating on. Unheard of for me.

I'm loving it though, being an autumn girl. Wish it was less rainy though.

Rubbish. Summer holidays were blue sky, sunburn and cracked brown fields due to the heat. Not a drop of drain when I was growing up.

Lol I'm not saying we never had hot summers and drought before but the trend towards more extreme weather is undeniable

Blimey! How old ARE you? I'm 51 and can remember a few rainy summers.

inverness123 · 22/07/2023 12:12

Because global warming leads to climate chaos, not just nice hot summers. The world is, on average, much hotter than it has ever been but within that there is a lot of unpredictable variation. For one thing, weather fronts are slowing down, so a hot spell like most of Europe are having, or a cold spell like the UK are having would last for a couple of days and move on. Now they’re getting stuck, which means it hangs around a long time.

It looks like the Gulf Stream may stop or even reverse, and that will bring much colder weather even with a higher global temp - places like Labrador, which is at the same latitude as the uk - are under snow sixth months of the year.

The idea that global warming = nice summers is incredibly naive.

dodeca · 22/07/2023 12:15

It was hotter in June. Personally this can stay. It’s a bit annoying but so much more comfortable than extreme heat. Easier to sleep, easier to pick an outfit, easier to work in, doesn’t affect appetite. Great.

CurlewKate · 22/07/2023 12:28

@Windchimeswinter Not sure if you've heard of somewhere called "the rest of the world"....

Iloveanicegarden · 22/07/2023 12:28

Some folk on here have very short memories. I can remember numerous school holidays being spoiled by cool temperatures and rain. I lived in a southern county (but not the south), holidayed in Cornwall - I can remember being in a quandary about what to wear (summer clothes and a plastic mac - awful thing cos it stuck to every bit of damp skin). I can remember diving into shops when it rained heavily - Woolworths in particular had a peculiar smell when it was damp)
So summers haven't all been hot. Check the records.

Absolutely.
I do feel for the summer lovers though.. it was a long winter and now barely a summer.
