Fiesta or focus

Just that really which one would you go for,
I have health issue with knee so going for an automatic.
Really wanted a focus more car for your money sort of thing however I’ve always lusted after the turquoise fiesta for years and this colour is exclusive to the fiesta is it crazy to get a smaller car just because I love the colour so much?
will be family of 4 no baby seats just 1 child seat which isn’t bulky ( the graco 4-12yr old)
The cars I’m looking at are around the same price I prob could get the focus a little cheaper tbh

Yes to the 1.0 ecoboom advice, it has a really bad track record so I’d definitely steer clear.

Having owned a focus 1.6 and now a Civic, I prefer the Honda. Main thing being the Focus always had bits going wrong, even when it was fairly low mileage ie 50k ish. New exhaust, suspension bushings all needed replacement. Honda on the other hand has 80k with not a single thing bar consumables. Far better engineering and much better longevity imo.

TeenDivided · 23/07/2023 10:28

My diesel focus has been going strong for 12 years now. I do mixed driving, mainly not motorway and get 550-600 miles on 40-42litres.
I think it is a better size for a family car than a fiesta, though sad to hear they have stopped as was thinking next car I'd go back to a fiesta.

FatOaf · 23/07/2023 10:35

It's a shame Ford stopped making the Fusion: very practical and with higher seats so you'd find getting in & out with a bad knee much easier. I loved my 2008 Fusion but some knob in a company BMW drove into the back of it at traffic lights and the insurance company wrote it off. I'd say the C-Max would be better than a Focus or Fiesta if you have 2 kids, but they also stopped making this 4 years ago.

Marvelgirl88 · 23/07/2023 10:49

Regarding the eco boost 1.0 is it all to avoid or only certain years ?

OP posts:
pointythings · 23/07/2023 10:58

I have had two Focuses, not the ecoboom, and they have been brilliant, no trouble and a joy to drive. My current one is an estate.

GasPanic · 23/07/2023 11:37

I have a Focus, it's fine. Fords are probably not as reliable as some other makes, but they cost a lot less to repair, and because they are Fords there are garages everywhere and everyone knows how to repair them (if a garage doesn't know how to repair a Focus or Fiesta which are pretty much the most popular cars in the UK then what does it know how to repair ?)

It drives well, is fuel efficient, tax is low and has all the stuff. I had an Audi before and that was like setting fire to £5 notes. The Ford is much cheaper to run.

As for fiesta vs focus, I would say depends on whether you need to transport more people on a regular basis. If so I would go for the Focus. If it is just you and one person every now and then I would go for the Fiesta.

Finally remember if you do get one that is turquoise it's resale value is likely to be less (but maybe cheaper to buy) as many people don't want a challenging colour.

zingally · 23/07/2023 12:00

If you can afford the fiesta and the smaller size won't cause an issue, then count it as your "you only live once" car.

I used to work in the car industry, and we'd say that the fiesta was for people who loved cars, and enjoyed driving, and the Focus is for people who just want something safe, reliable and comfortable to get them from A to B without a fuss.

Basically, the focus is the more sensible long-term investment, but the fiesta is just more fun.

Marvelgirl88 · 23/07/2023 08:47

I haven’t found a focus I like enough to buy and the fiesta I’m considering is a 1.0 eco boost 18 plate but im just concerned about rear seat room as have two children , the car will mostly be for sch runs , shopping etc only motorway driving once/ twice a year

You will definitely appreciate the bigger space as the kids grow. Focus every time

bluesky45 · 23/07/2023 12:05

I had a fiesta and DH had a focus. Fiesta was small, boot is absolutely tiny! But I did fit 2 kids in 360 seats in it and double pram in the boot (one of the pram seats had to go on the front passenger seat but the chassis and bottom seat went in the boot). Focus was much more roomy, plenty of room in the boot for holidays etc. However we had absolutely no end of problems with it and I absolutely would not recommend. The fiesta was fab for a little cheap car, never had a problem with it.

BrunchMonster · 23/07/2023 12:11

I think it's only certain types of the EcoBoost engine that are the problem.
I have that engine in a BMax - EcoBoost 1.0, 125hp though, which might make a difference, and there have been no recalls or anything on that - in fact it's been a great engine in this model, very popular.
However - the wet belt in the Ecoboost engines needs replacing at 10 years, and because they only started to be made in about 2012 or something like that, it's only now coming up to the time when they all need doing, and a lot of garages don't have the specific tool needed for it, so it's hard to shop around, and it's an expensive repair, like getting on for £1000. So worth checking for the year that you buy, how soon is it likely to need that doing, and are there places around that will do it for you.

Theraffarian · 23/07/2023 12:22

In addition to the above , I would say it depends on the model of the focus , titanium turbo boost 1.6 is a lovely smooth ride compared to say a zetec.

If I remember correctly the Fiesta is the most stolen car in the U.K. because the alarm doesn’t hook up to the boot the same way as most cars , so it’s an easy access point .

isitaline97 · 23/07/2023 12:35

Get the focus if that's the car you want. You could always get is resprayed any colour you like, or even wrapped 😊

Snoringgently · 23/07/2023 12:38

I've had my fiesta from new and it's now about 9 years old. Servicing has been pretty lax, but despite this it had never ever had a single thing wrong with it. Love it!

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 23/07/2023 08:37

It’s the 1.0 eco boost engine that’s the issue not the focus.
that engine is shit and should be avoided in any form. Fiesta or focus

Mine had this engine (2012 model) and I had no problems? We only sold it because after DS2 was born we needed a bigger boot, otherwise I'd still be driving it now.

Marvelgirl88 · 23/07/2023 12:49

I’d definitely only be looking at the titanium spec two have come up
18 plate fiesta £12k ( 58k miles)
15 plate focus £11k (34k miles)

might not fit for either and keep looking but now I’m leaning towards a focus for more room

both are auto as need auto due to a knee issue

I have not long bought a used Fiesta. Quite shocked by car prices at the moment. It's my second Fiesta and I'm pleased with it; plenty room in the boot for ddog and the back seats have plenty of leg room. My last car was a diesel hyundai and was so expensive run so this makes a nice change. Never had a focus so can't comment but you can't go wrong with a Ford - cheap to run, reliable and parts easy to get hold of if something goes wrong.

Marvelgirl88 · 23/07/2023 13:04

Out the two I listed above what’s peoples thoughts ? I don’t know much at all about cars so really appreciate the advice , I’m spending my savings on this long overdue as been without a car for a while

Do you think enough room for a family of 4 ? Yes the prices are ridiculous and because the need auto anything decent is 10k minimum

I have a turbo diesel Focus and while I love it, it's never out of the garage. I think I've spent more money in repairs than I paid for it.

FayCarew · 23/07/2023 13:08

Whichever you get, get a five door one

Rummikub · 23/07/2023 13:25

I have a 5 door fiesta and my two dc fit in the back fine. Including when we had car seats. Done 140000 miles mainly motorway and it’s been great.

Partner has focus and it is more roomy but I still prefer the fiesta.

4weeknoalcohol · 23/07/2023 13:37

Focus are quite low down so with your health issues Fiesta.

4weeknoalcohol · 23/07/2023 13:38

Fiesta or Ford you need to get 2019 model onwards.

Theraffarian · 23/07/2023 13:42

Honestly if you’ve narrowed it down to the two I would test drive both asap and see what you prefer . We all have different preferences, I’d go with the focus myself as I like a bigger car , and more boot space , but I haven’t had much experience of fiestas because of that . Also sorry if I’ve missed it , but engine size may be a factor , I like a car with a bit of zip , the turbo 1.6 focus has that , but obviously if you get the fiesta and are pulling less weight you may find a smaller engine works fine for you .

Rummikub · 23/07/2023 14:08

Focus are quite low down so with your health issues Fiesta.

This is interesting as I struggle a little getting into the focus. I thought it was because it’s wider than the fiesta. Fiesta easier to get in and out of for me.
