To have complained in the supermarket

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:03

Won't name which one, but one of the leading ones, a superstore.
I used the toilet there and it was absolutely disgusting. The floors covered in soggy paper, not one toilet that didn't have urine or worse splashed all over it.
Used one as I was desperate.
Reported it in a polite manner and the customer service lady was understanding and said she'd pass it on.
Ate in their café as was pretty hungry and they had a 50% deal on. You really do get what you pay for I guess, but that's on me really.
Anyway that was just as bad, only about 3 customers but the floor looked like it hadn't been swept in days, staff stood around, dirty tables. Saw one kid wipe a snotty hand on the table, though I suppose that's not exactly the supermarket's fault.
I ordered a burger, wasn't expecting fine dining but I was served one of those toasted muffins with an evidently frozen burger, could tell by the taste, and those microwave chips.
It's my own fault, can't expect haute cuisine for only a few pounds I guess.
Shame how standards are so low though.

Also, parents letting kids run up and down the café like it was a play area, that gets on my nerves.

There is no excuse for the toilets to be that dirty. It's a health issue.

Same for the cafe but as you say, you get what you pay for.

CC4712 · 20/07/2023 17:07

Did you take the frozen burger back?

The toilets should be cleaned better than that. You could always email head office with your concerns.

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:08

Yeah, it was like what you'd get in a nightclub at 3am (not that I go clubbing anymore!)
I just ate it as was hungry, I knew they'd have nothing better I guess.

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 20/07/2023 17:09

Well the kids running around and the snotty kid were all probably the culprits from the toilet mess

Hardly sainsburys/Morrisons/Tesco fault!

You CAN name them you know..... nothing bad will happen!

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:09

I get places are short staffed but I've seen other places manage to have regular cleaning staff.

OP posts:
Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:09

Ok . It's one that begins with A 😂

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 20/07/2023 17:10

Cleaners tend to clean morning and evening shifts

There isn't one on hand 24/7

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:12

I guess so, but it was just a totally unacceptable standard.

I’m making no excuses for them but the labour shortage really is having an effect just about everywhere IMO.

Even to the point where shop assistants stand there talking to each other as they serve you, their jobs are under no threat whatever they do really.

And to be clear I’m not having a go at shop assistants, I suspect they get a very hard time from the general public these days, worse than ever.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 20/07/2023 17:14

When you say frozen burger do you mean it was a cooked burger that originated from a freezer? Because that's how it read to me but a PP seemed to think differently. I think YABU about the burger if you mean it came from a freezer but YANBU if you mean it wasn't cooked.

Report the cafe to Environmental Health at the council. Take photos. They can do a full hygiene inspection. Unfortunately AFAIK there's no one to enforce toilet hygiene though. If you complain enough about the toilets there's a risk they'll just lock them (if they're dirty because they can't get the cleaning staff) which doesn't benefit anyone so I'd consider what to do about that carefully before proceeding.

Readyplayerthr33 · 20/07/2023 17:16

You are in a supermarket cafe. You choose to go somewhere shit and eat shit food, that’s on you. Why didn’t you just go home to eat?

The toilets are inexcusable. But a supermarket cafe? Come on. I wouldn’t eat there. That’s your choice though.

You do sound pretty miserable in general though. Just the tone of your posts is very defeated. Try different places instead of acting like this is just life and everything is shit.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 20/07/2023 17:17

I sympathise. Out of hunger we stopped at an Asda cafe recently, nothing else was open

God almighty. I've never seen such bad food.

Ordered a breakfast. Thinking what can go wrong. Everything. Everything can.

First plate was dished up. I ordered sausage, hash browns, mushrooms, bacon and egg. They had no bacon. Only enough for one sausage each. Still tried to charge full price. Whilst I waited for her dish the other plates up, a staff member wanted some ketchup so leaned over the serving area to get some, instead of walking round. Meaning her hair went in my food. Told them I wasn't eating that plate. So now no sausage. DH had beans and a tomato, the beans were rock hard and looked like two day old left in the tin beans, and the tomato looked like someone took a blowtorch to it

Gets to the table after trying to find a clean set of cutlery and having to ask for some as there was a mix of dirty and clean in the area you collected it from. Egg is congealed, and freezing cold. Hash browns were also cold and soggy. So I went back up, and said I would like a refund. The food is rank, you've tried to charge full price for next to no order, what has been provided is disgusting.

She says, like it's an excuse "well it's been here since 8.30am." It was nearly 11am. So had sat for hours.

We got a refund from a separate member of staff who heard what was going on. She actually said she tells mates not to try and eat there, the staff are, in her words "thick" with no food qualifications, and the food is disgusting.

Reported to head officer who said "thanks for letting us know" and nothing else.

Place needs shutting down.

Twillow · 20/07/2023 17:18

Of course you weren't being unreasonable to complain. Bear in mind, though, it's not the staff that do this to the toilets, it's the customers - it's shocking that people do this. Can you imagine what an awful job it is to be a cleaner cleaning up this mess day after day?
That said, I would contact the store manager - customer services aren't going to do much.

noglow · 20/07/2023 17:18

Never order food from somewhere with such poor hygiene standards. You could get very ill.

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 17:22

I've eaten in other supermarket cafés which weren't anywhere near as bad, but anyway I'll know not to use this one again.
Indeed it's not the staff's fault.
I feel sorry for the cleaners, and people who leave the toilets like that should be embarrassed.
I've seen people going in with 3 kids at a time so that also makes me suspect.

Only thing I can say on this is the toilets being in that state is unacceptable I worked in ‘Asda’ years ago and the policy for the 7 years that I worked in the store was that the cleaners should check/clean the toilets every hour. So that part is on the supermarket and for that you have every right to complain.
the snotty nose kid and the kids running around is not there fault and the cafe is kinda what you would expect from a supermarket cafe…

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 20/07/2023 17:38

I worked at ASDA for years and the hygiene was truly grim. There's no way I'd have ever bought anything cooked in that shop.

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 18:00

Oh dear :/ I won't be going back to eat there in any case

OP posts:
Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 18:03

I did a trial shift in a bar years ago, shift ended at 4am after we'd cleaned up. The toilets were absolutely filthy, especially the women's. We found a glass down one of the toilets, blood all over the place and sanitary towels/tampons just chucked willy nilly. People can be animals.

After you see all that dirt and filth and you still ate there?

Allhailkingcharlie · 20/07/2023 19:07

Knew it was Asda before you said anything! It's always bad. I had mouldy bread from there once.

Rollerskate67 · 20/07/2023 19:08

Shame, as I like the actual supermarket. I've had pleasant experiences with Sainsbury's and M and S cafés.

OP posts:
LadyKenya · 20/07/2023 19:13

I would not have eaten there, and waited until I got home. If the place is dirty it is a no no.

Handsnotwands · 20/07/2023 19:14

The piece of advice I’ve always borne in mind was given to me by the landlord of my local pub.

He said I’d the toilet is dirty don’t eat there. If they don’t care about keeping the bits you can see clean there’s little chance the bits you can’t see (the kitchen) are
