So if I've understood the reporting on the BBC news this evening, the BBC has apologised because it (incorrectly it turns out) reported that Farage's account was closed for commercial reasons because he didn't meet Coutts' wealth threshold. Farage has said he's obtained internal documents from the bank showing the actual reason they closed his account is because they view him as racist and xenophobic.

So he'd rather be portrayed as racist than 'poor'?!?!

Lemonyfuckit · 24/07/2023 23:22

I should add that my previous post is somewhat tongue in cheek because I of course don't believe banks should be able to close people's accounts because of their beliefs.

If that’s what you’ve understood from this story so far, you need help.

I'm still a bit concerned that certain posters upthread, who appear perfectly sentient on other threads, were so quick to accuse posters like me of being 'supporters of Nigel Farage'. It's like IQs just dropped sharply round here.

Lot of cognitive dissonance going on. Lot of brains losing that equation.

Barbadossunset · 24/07/2023 23:25

It’s interesting who realised the significance of Simon Jack sitting next to Dame Alison Rose at that dinner and told either or both the press (Telegraph first?) and Farage.

I wonder during their cosy little chat if Alison Rose told Simon Jack that the bank sacked NF because of his views but the official story was to be that he didn’t meet the minimum wealth requirement.

Yeah, that's not it. Are people really this dumb? Or this desperate to ignore a principle because they don't agree with the person?

Well clearly that's what happened. And Simon Jack was all to happy to digest it and regurgitate it. Because Farage.

Never mind fairness, or journalistic rigour.

Qbishy · 24/07/2023 23:31

There's clearly a big lawsuit incoming, or Simon Jack/the BBC wouldn't have apologised so abjectly.

Qbishy · 24/07/2023 23:32

Which SOME OF US said quite a few days ago, on this thread!!!

Qbishy · 24/07/2023 23:42

Barbadossunset · 20/07/2023 21:09

In any case, this ends with Coutts settling for an undisclosed sum, not a court hearing.

Could NF insist on a court hearing or would he have to accept an out of court settlement?

Nobody has to accept an out of court settlement.

They just threw Rose under the bus by re iterating that they double checked with the source who told them to print it.

They’re all like rats in a sack now. Trying to outdo each other to save their skin.

Swrigh1234 · 25/07/2023 00:06

It’s like the woke left’s worst nightmare that Nigel Farage has suddenly become a public hero. Going to war against the establishment and this time no one can even oppose him. They themselves made him into a hero. Woke stupidity knows no bounds. Farage has eaten them for breakfast. Must be so galling.

Twyford · 25/07/2023 00:18

Public hero? No-one cares that Farage has exposed himself as being too toxic for Coutts, even if he has bullied them into apologising for him. If he wants to pay all those extra charges for the snob value of being able to say he banks with Coutts, they're welcome to each other. It doesn't make him any sort of a hero, and you insult genuine heroes when you claim that.

You really are deluding yourself if you think that the left will have any problem at all with Coutts being done over.

Twyford · 25/07/2023 00:19

Qbishy · 24/07/2023 23:42

Nobody has to accept an out of court settlement.

But if a reasonable offer of settlement were made and he failed to accept it, he could find himself having to pay the other side's costs from that point onwards, as well as his own.

Twyford · 25/07/2023 00:24

Swrigh1234 · 24/07/2023 23:16

This episode basically shows the arrogance of the work brigade. They think so little of anyone with opposing political views, or maybe they are so stupid so as to discriminate against people openly and then conspire openly to lie to the media, the media to openly print lies and then try and cover it up. It’s not even discrete.

That’s how little they think of anyone who doesn’t go along with the woke nonsense.

Who knew that working made you. arrogant.

And what has being "discrete" got to do with anything? Why do workers have to be individually separate and distinct, and why does discriminating mean that you aren''t?

Absolutely.

Your 'public hero' is a dangerous racist, despite this, even racists, even paedophiles need bank accounts as I'm sure all the NF fans on here will agree. I wonder what you all think of the Co-Ops ethical policy on business bank accounts?
A quick bio of your hero.

Who is Nigel Farage?

Whatever the rights and wrongs of Nigel Farage having his elite bank account cancelled, let’s remember who he actually is

He did not bully anybody into an apologising for him they apologises to him.

If you bank at Nat West you are going to pay extra charges.

Qbishy · 25/07/2023 07:55

Andrew Neil again, on X (as we must learn to call it now):

The BBC has apologised to Nigel Farage for publishing inaccurate information about his bank account which it says it got from a “trusted and senior source” NatWestGroup.
This puts Coutts/Nat West even more in the frame:
Has NatWest CEO Alison Rose mounted an internal investigation into who’s behind this unprofessional leak of false information to the BBC?
Given suspicions she’s the leaker can Rose ever appear in public again til she’s answered this question? Will she have to remain behind closed doors, shielded by her enormous team of internal and external PR flaks (which taxpayers are paying for)?
Again, given Rose is the main suspect, what is Nat West Chairman Howard Davies, never usually backward in coming forward, doing about it? Why only silence from him and the Board?
And from CouttsandCo CEO Peter Flavel? Did he play no role in the plan to ditch Farage? Was he just Rose’s willing puppet?
The Bank dossier on Farage says the decision to close his account had to be referred up to [name deleted]. Was that Flavel? Or Rose?
And what role did Coutts chairman Lord (naturally, it’s an inclusive bank, remember) Remnant play? What did he know when he became chair in January?

By "bullied" I assume you mean "published their own actual words".

It must be so galling to some who were absolutely positive that they knew what they were talking about, that Farage has now been apologised to by NatWest, by the BBC, and and by Simon Jack. And the NatWest CEO is probably on her way out, for breaking confidentiality and downright lying.

Some of us said this upthread, but we were told repeatedly on here, and on X, that we were wrong. Ha ha.

But that's just factually inaccurate, it's why he's Received apologies from Coutts and the BBC, because the accusations were not true

You must have been too busy to read the words all the little people took time to write.
In summary nobody cares.

But I am sure that management in all the banks will have been handing out audit instructions too.

With regard 'nobody cares' I care. I care very deeply that a nasty little racist like NF has such political power and popular support in the UK.
