To call my baby

Horace? It was my dear grandads name and I would love to honour him by naming my DS after him. Nobody has been rude about the name so far but I can tell people aren’t keen. My thinking is it can be nicknamed to Harry?

Would you say the same to someone who wants to call their baby Henry? I know millions of them but none that get called horrid Henry.

It’s different though isn’t it because every other kids called Henry. There’s nothing original about thinking up a nickname, or if they did there’d be loads of them all being called the same thing. More likely to get teased when you stand out. Each to their own though.

My grandad Maurice died just before DS3 was born, and as I sat waiting to register him all by himself I was SO tempted to whack it in as middle name. Luckily the friend I texted from the registry office made me see the light. And Maurice hasn't come back in the last 20 years and I don't think Horace will either.

Talkitout1 · 19/07/2023 18:07

My dad is called Nigel, he wouldn't even let me have it as my child's middle name 🤣 I went with one of his middle names for my sons middle name in the end. If it has to be Horace I would leave it in the middle, I really don't think he will appreciate that the older he gets

Shakirasma · 19/07/2023 18:07

You could nick name him Harry, but kids have a habit of coming up with their own regardless.

Round here you would definitely end up with a little Hoz, or Hozza.

bridgetreilly · 19/07/2023 18:09

I like it. But honestly, if you and your partner like it, literally no one else’s opinion matters. I would just stop asking people.

I know a Horace. He's lovely and if you met him I think PP's opinions of thinking it's awful would soon wash away. That's how names are, aren't they?

That's great. However, I would never call a child Horace.

Spanielsarepainless · 19/07/2023 18:21

Horry nicer shortening than Harry. Harry is the diminutive of Henry. Horace is good anyway.

CallMeDiaz · 19/07/2023 18:22

Horry 🙄

Of all the many thousands of nice names in the world...

TheMentionOfYourName · 19/07/2023 18:23

I would use it as a middle name only.

Brawsome · 19/07/2023 18:25

Anyone mentioned The Broons yet?

MandyMotherOfBrian · 19/07/2023 18:26

A song about a lucky lad who somehow defies the odds and gets the girl…

AxolotlEars · 19/07/2023 18:31

I always think it's good to reflect on how the name could be shortened...so Hor! I think if you want to call him Harry then go with Harry as his actual name and Horace as a middle... depending on your surname!

TwilightSkies · 19/07/2023 18:32

Please don’t. Please.

Rubyupbeat · 19/07/2023 18:35

Please don't, it's really awful and not an old name that can have a second flowering, even as a second name it will be not nice.

HazelBite · 19/07/2023 18:36

I knew a Horace years ago everyone called him Hozza!

Marleymoo42 · 19/07/2023 18:39

I wouldn't over complicate with a nickkname. It caused endless upset in our family and relatives genuinely weren't sure which name to use. Kids like ownership of their name and our DD aged 4 demanded we called her the name on her school peg, not the cute nickname. Which, in hindsight, is fair enough!

madeleine85 · 19/07/2023 18:42

I wish you were able to ask him what he would have thought, or can you ask your relatives if he would have liked that? We almost called our daughter Doris after her great grandma, and when we told her she forbid it and told us that she hated her name. We would have been none the wiser had she passed without telling us.

stbrandonsboat · 19/07/2023 17:01

It's awful and people will laugh at it. Why would you want to saddle your child with an awful name?

This. Its an absolutely awful name. Why not just call him " punch me" because that's what will happen once he gets to year 5

Agapornis · 19/07/2023 18:52

How about Ray? Horatio?

WaltzingWaters · 19/07/2023 18:56

I vote for using it as a middle name. It’s not great as a first name. But as others have suggested, Ace is a better and more natural nn than Harry.

Fromage · 19/07/2023 18:57

Horace is an excellent name imo but name your baby what you want. There's no name that everyone will like.

ohsuzannah · 19/07/2023 19:00

I Love "Horace" 😍

TheaBrandt · 19/07/2023 19:09

He will be a teen and adult. Is he likely to be an alpha type and carry it off? I have one confident popular teen who could basically carry off any name and one low key one who would be utterly mortified. It’s why most of us play it safe ish as you don’t know who you will end up with.

hattie43 · 19/07/2023 19:10

It's not fair to call a baby Horace .

TheaBrandt · 19/07/2023 19:11

Adored my granny she was a wise feminist pioneer but she detested her admittedly hideous name (almost female version of this one) and would spin in her grave if anyone used it.
