Am on week long stay in rented house, with elderly mum, dp, dB and nephew and my 2 daughters. Last night was our second night here - first was uneventful. So, kitchen at back with big windows/ doors to garden which leads to public path and beach. Around midnight there's a very bright strobe light shone through kitchen. DB goes outside- its a group of kids. So we try to ignore. Goes on for about 20 minutes. Then there's knocking at front door - noone there. Light appears again and then we hear what we think are stones being thrown at back. Front door then gets kicked and windows knocked on. By now my youngest is terrified, as is my mum. DP and DB follow the kids at front and get abuse shouted at them. DP and DB stay at front door until after 1.30, when it all goes quiet.

We didn't call police, very rural here and assumed that by time they'd arrive it would be over, and that police would escalate

I messaged house owner last night to say we'd be leaving today. We don't feel safe.

This was first time I've spent time with DB and DM in years. So disappointed.

Would you leave? We spent over £1500 on house. What refund (if any?) would you expect?

Lol at what refund would you expect. I wouldn't expect any refund if I had to leave because of my DM's anxiety, I don't think holiday home owners can insure against that.

While this is very distressing, if I were the home owner I wouldn’t refund you.

You haven’t done the obvious thing of calling the police, which one would expect.
You also haven’t given the owner any chance to even attempt at making things better.

On the other hand there’s you wanting to feel safe and enjoy the holiday.
I would call 101 now and report everything that happened and call back tonight if this happens again. When reporting don’t brush it off saying “oh just kids”, but explain the severity and how it made you feel then if tonight it happens again, call the police again.

Propose for the owner to get maybe 2 ring doorbells for front and back so they have recordings if this has happened again and not a one off.

Why didn’t you go outside with teacher face and ask them what do they think they’re doing. Try to get them to talk to you.
In response to rudeness tell them you’re ringing the police and contacting their school.
Its probably boredom, illicit drinking, drugs and you can report to this to the police as well

DarthTater3 · 20/07/2023 20:54

I would call the police and home owner immediately. If they aren’t able to take care of it for you then I would leave. And yes I’d be requesting a refund. I would expect a full refund but I’m not sure legally what your rights are so that’s something to look into. If a refund isn’t forthcoming perhaps make it clear that you will be leaving honest reviews all over the place and see it that changes their mind.

Just posting purely to say I will NEVER ask for advice or help on this site due to the vile people just desperate to be as nasty as possible to someone who has had the audacity to ask for some solidarity and/or sound advice. And believe me there will be others reading this who take one look at the comments and say “NOPE!”.

The users of this site are damaging it by being complete and utter twats. I’ve been on here for 8 years and can’t remember it being this bad.

I agree. The number of threads I’ve seen recently where posters are utterly vile to the OP. And so many people start their threads asking for people to go easy on them. Why do women have to preempt this nastiness?

Tell me you've never lived in a rough area without telling me you've never lived in a rough area.

"Teacher face" won't stop you getting stabbed.

I bet the OP hasn't booked a cottage in a rough area though.

Just sound like kids being annoying. Not a lot the owner can do. If this had happened at your house - what would you have done? Calling police is reasonable and letting the owners know it's happened is reasonable. Going home is up to you. However the owners can't control every individual in the area any more than you could do this at home. If this had happened at your own home, would you have been putting your house on the market today and moving to a hotel or rental property until you sold it? If not, then you are going home of your own choice, not because you need to and you don't need a refund. I mean if you actually could find evidence that this happens to guests at this property every night then that would be different, but for all you know it's one off that the landlords couldn't predict, with some kids that are also staying on holiday locally.

This happened last July! The OP has been home for months!
