Do you wait outside if someone is giving you a lift?

If someone is kind enough to offer me a lift I always wait outside so they don't have to get out their car. However when I am giving someone a lift I have to find a parking space and go and get them... even though I text when I'm leaving so they know when I'm getting there. I find this really inconsiderate. One friend took the biscuit recently when I arrived to collect her... she said she was waiting for her washing machine to finish and had to hang out her washing before we left. Am I a grumpy old control freak or is this not reasonable? Also lateness in general.. obviously everyone is running behind sometimes.. but I'm sure we all know the friends that are consistently late.... it is rude... implying that my time is less important than theirs...grrrr!

I wait outside or keep an eye out the window.

id never want to keep anyone waiting.

HeddaGarbled · 18/07/2023 18:09

I don’t wait outside but I’d be looking out of the window.

If it’s a good friend and we’re not in a rush, they might come in for a bit, but if it’s a newish acquaintance, or someone who I know likes to get going, or we’re on a tight schedule, I wouldn’t keep them waiting.

Could you text from the car to say you’re there, if finding a parking space is difficult?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/07/2023 18:14

I don't wait outside but I'll be ready to go when their car appears.

CurlewKate · 18/07/2023 18:14

Text from the car to say you're hovering outside.

ThankTwixItsFriday · 18/07/2023 18:20

strangely a relative of mine HATED it if someone waited outside or by the window for them - they said they thought people were inferring they were late picking them up and being impatient 🤷🏾‍♀️

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/07/2023 18:21

I watch from the window then go running out. If I can't see a car arriving from where I am, I wait outside. When I collect my friends, it's the same. One of my friend's lives on the 10th floor of a block of flats and there's nowhere to park nearby so I text him when I'm leaving and then call (handsfree in my car) when I'm turning into his road so he's waiting outside on the pavement and can just hop in. I've never had to wait for anyone I'm picking up. Because my friends appreciate the lifts and aren't arseholes.

This

lanthanum · 18/07/2023 18:24

I make sure I'm ready and looking out for the car so they don't have to get out. However as I spent the first 8 years of my working life in car pools and expected to be waiting at the designated pick-up point, maybe that affects my attitude.

Whatajokr · 18/07/2023 18:24

Depends on the weather if I'm outside or not. I'll ask them to text me when they arrive if I'm not outside, as I'm hovering by the front door.

Pottedpalm · 18/07/2023 18:26

If it’s easy to park and we have loads of time I might go in, but in
the circumstances you describe I would expect them to be waiting outside. If not, no lift next time.

thedogisstaring · 18/07/2023 18:30

Me and my friends just phone from outside to say we're here so the other knows to come out. I think you're making this a bigger issue than necessary.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 18/07/2023 18:31

If my family are home I wait outside because otherwise they'll suddenly think of a million urgent questions just as I'm leaving.

If I'm home alone I'll keep an eye out the window and will be outside before they reach my home (cul de sac so I can see the entrance).

I really dislike having to park up if I'm giving someone a lift...well except for my mam. She's disabled so I have to park up and help her to the car.

ThinWomansBrain · 18/07/2023 18:33

If I got the "waiting for my washing to finish and then hang it out" response, I wouldn't hang around & would reply that I'd see them there as they weren't ready.

If someone was giving me a lift, I wouldn't wait outside, but would say in advance 'text me when you get here' - how much are they expecting you to spend on parking?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/07/2023 18:35

I live somewhere people can stop directly outside. So I look out the window and run out when they arrive.

My DB doesn't, so I ring when I leave and say 'I'll be there in 5 mins, I'll pick you up from outside x shop.'

2bazookas · 18/07/2023 18:53

Just say " I'll need you to be waiting on the corner of Oak Rd at 8 so I don't have to park. Please be on time because I won't be able to stop."

If they aren't there, just drive on . Not your problem.

ManchesterLu · 18/07/2023 19:19

I don't wait outside, but I do spy on my Ring doorbell and I'm ready to step out the door as soon as they get here.

I hate picking people up who end up making me late. I am NOT a late person, and it stresses me out.

Lol. That’s quite abrupt

Theos · 18/07/2023 19:20

I always text or phone. THERE IN 5

OldTinHat · 18/07/2023 19:26

I always wait outside.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 18/07/2023 19:28

When giving a lift I wait outside and call them to come out instead of parking

GoodChat · 18/07/2023 19:28

I keep an eye out but my friends and I always text when we're outside.

If someone told me I had to wait for them to hang their washing out I'd ask if they were taking the piss.

purplecorkheart · 18/07/2023 19:43

I normally stand at the hall window as I can see their car from about 10 metres away. It gives me enough time to get outside, turn on alarm and lock door. I used to stand nearer the road but to turn is more difficult. However if someone is kind enough to give me a lift I will happy wait anywhere that suits them and I will be there long before the agreed time. Equally if I am picking some one up I expect them to be ready to go. If I say I will be there at 8.30 am I expect you ready to go. Not looking for your bag, shoes, coats, keys etc

SideWonder · 18/07/2023 19:51

Some of your friends are quite rude @ettieb Waiting to hang out the washing! You are not grumpy to resent this disregard of the value of your time.

WallaceinAnderland · 18/07/2023 19:55

You don't have to, you choose to. That is something else entirely and up to you.

If you want to change that you should tell the person to wait outside for you. It's no different for them than if they were waiting for a bus.

Curlygirl06 · 18/07/2023 20:08

I have a friend whose timekeeping is..... interesting. If I drive somewhere, and I do a lot as I don't drink, I text her when I'm leaving to get the first person, then when I've picked them up and so on until it's her turn. Then I tell her I'll be 5 minutes or so and if she's not ready I'm leaving. She's always been ready as she knows I mean it and she's usually waiting at the window.
If someone's picking me up, I get ready, keys in the door and sit on the stairs waiting for them to pull up so I'm right ready to go when I see their car.
