to have black bridesmaid dresses?

Hey! I’m getting married this November, and pretty much immediately decided on having black bridesmaid dresses.

It’s an evening wedding at kinda an “upscale” venue, where a lot of the decor is cream, gold, brown wood and black accents. Very formal, and classic.

Husband and his groomsmen will all be in black, and I love synchronicity, so the idea of my bridesmaids matching the groomsmen really stands out to me. Plus, black is versatile and can be reworn.

A friend of mine (not a bridesmaid) went off on me when I showed her a pic of my bridesmaid dresses inspiration (not purchased yet, as bridesmaids are picking out their own styles). She told me it would be like attending a funeral, and bridesmaids are supposed to be colorful and bright. I reminded her that I’m not really a color person, as I prefer neutral tones anyway (my favorite color is genuinely white). She said “well I won’t be wearing black” and I reminded her I wasn’t asking her to. Guests can wear whatever they like - I don’t mind if someone shows up in pjs, as long as everyone has a nice time!! She then said “everyone is going to hate it but won’t want to tell you. You’re making a mistake.”

The whole thing has left me baffled. So what do you think? AIBU to have my bridesmaids in black?

I’ve been married now for 25 years.

l had one bridesmaid and two flower girls.

The bridesmaid wore black and the flower girls wore ivory (with an accent coloured bow).

Everyone thought I was either mad or I just wanted something a little different.

25 years later I’m still getting complimented on my choice.

Do it, you won’t regret it this all

😁

There you go OP - dress your bridesmaids in black and expect divorce. You've been warned 😅.

I was a bridesmaid last summer and wore black. It looked really nice when we had our photo taken next to the bride - the contrast between black and white was very striking. I thought the colour and style of the dresses fitted in really nicely with the venue. The bride made black and white bouquets of dried flowers for us all too.

I honestly couldn't tell you what colour dresses the bridesmaids wore at any wedding I've been to where I wasn't bride or bridesmaid. Most people don't really care.

Ha, reading that was a bit scary. But I’ve known people who chose all the “standard” colors (pink, red, blue, etc) who have ended up divorcing. I don’t think it’s the bridesmaids dress that makes or break a marriage tbh 😂😂

It will look amazing. I went to a wedding once where the bride was in black. Your friend would have died of shock.

oh it would have been a meltdown! 😂😂

My sister's bridesmaids wore black dresses with white decoration, and they all looked incredible, especially as my sisters dress was white with a similar black decoration. It was very stylish and not at all funereal.

kraftyKitten · 17/07/2023 19:11

Black with very colourful bouquets 💐 to balance it out

Bridesmaids love the choice of black! They all echoed my sentiment of at least the dresses can be reworn to multiple events and black is flattering on every shape and size.

Go for it then! Who cares what anyone else thinks - I bet you'll all look amazing.

YANBU @BlackTieEvent Black bridesmaids dresses sound fab! Grin

PMSL at the poster saying 'if your bridesmaids wear black, your marriage is doomed..........' 😆 Same kind of daft mindset as saying if you buy a second hand/recycled/vintage wedding dress the marriage is doomed.

So anyone whose bridesmaids dresses are pretty pink or peach, and they buy a new wedding dress for £3K, (instead of sensibly going down the recycling route and getting one off vinted or ebay for a tenth of the price,) their marriage will be a super dooooper success and will not EVER go wrong, or end in divorce?! Some people ... !😂

I have been to 2 weddings this past year btw where the bridesmaids wore black dresses. They looked like the lasses in pic 1. NOT like the ones in pic 2, as some are trying to imply. The bridesmaids were chuffed with them because they are figure flattering and stylish. Who the fuck says 'it's like a funeral!' Just coz the bridesmaids have black dresses?! FFS! 😂

I wore a short black satin dress at my wedding! Not a goth or anything, but we were doing it on the cheap and it was the most flattering dress I owned. No bridesmaids!

Your colours sound lovely OP, very classy.

Qbish · 17/07/2023 20:00

If you want it, you have it. How is it your friend's business?!

Maybe stop telling people about your decisions. Just get on with it.

That seems to be the old fashioned view on google too! Like it’s a bad omen, but I suppose if a dress color is what does your marriage in, there’s bigger problems there 😂😂😂

I knew someone who shelled out thousands for her brand new dress and specifically said “I’m not taking a hand me down like my sister did.” Guess who is now divorced? Sister is laughing all the way to her 25th anniversary

And I do agree about the funeral comment. STBH said that if he hears anyone say it’s like a funeral, he’ll happily point out the lack of body and ask who is going to take one for the team?

My bridesmaids wore black…and so did I. So far as I know no one was even remotely bothered. Maybe they were just a slightly more cosmopolitan bunch than your friend seems to be.

I would say I’m quite traditional, and I can’t think of anything more traditional than black tie/black and white. Apparently it’s not as classic as I thought 😂😂😂

No, Charlotte wore a black backless bridesmaids dress for some random wedding..

No it was Carrie's wedding to Big (the first one that didn't happen) that Charlotte wore the black backless bridesmaid dress.

FuckNuggets · 17/07/2023 20:20

I didn't have any bridesmaids (tiny wedding) but if I had, black would most definitely have been the colour I'd wanted their dresses to be.

Papernotplastic · 17/07/2023 20:22

Is it usual for the groomsmen to wear black?

sociallubricant · 17/07/2023 20:26

I was a bridesmaid a few years ago and we wore long black dresses...it looked really chic with pearl jewellery accessories

Loafbeginsat60 · 17/07/2023 20:28

Gorgous idea

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/07/2023 20:33

Half of the marriages with bridesmaids in yellow and pink fail. Omen my arse.

I'd have loved you OP. I had to wear lilac for one. Yuk. Purple was good!

Lookitaahhh · 17/07/2023 20:39

I think it sounds awesome

Leapintothelightning · 17/07/2023 20:40

I would've loved to have black bridesmaid dresses! But all I could hear in my head was my granda saying "never wear black to a wedding" and I chickened out 😂 don't be me! Be bold! Do it!

My bridesmaids wore black evening gowns. They looked fab, and they were gowns they have both been able to wear again. Do it! It looks amazing.

Notfeelinglikemyselftoday · 17/07/2023 20:42

Yanbu but it depends on the dress. I was a bridesmaid in black in the noughties and the style def dated

I’ve been lucky in that my immediate family haven’t an issue with the choice. My own grandmother (god rest her) would have only complained had I chosen green. She hated green for some reason 😂😂😂
