to have black bridesmaid dresses?

Hey! I’m getting married this November, and pretty much immediately decided on having black bridesmaid dresses.

It’s an evening wedding at kinda an “upscale” venue, where a lot of the decor is cream, gold, brown wood and black accents. Very formal, and classic.

Husband and his groomsmen will all be in black, and I love synchronicity, so the idea of my bridesmaids matching the groomsmen really stands out to me. Plus, black is versatile and can be reworn.

A friend of mine (not a bridesmaid) went off on me when I showed her a pic of my bridesmaid dresses inspiration (not purchased yet, as bridesmaids are picking out their own styles). She told me it would be like attending a funeral, and bridesmaids are supposed to be colorful and bright. I reminded her that I’m not really a color person, as I prefer neutral tones anyway (my favorite color is genuinely white). She said “well I won’t be wearing black” and I reminded her I wasn’t asking her to. Guests can wear whatever they like - I don’t mind if someone shows up in pjs, as long as everyone has a nice time!! She then said “everyone is going to hate it but won’t want to tell you. You’re making a mistake.”

The whole thing has left me baffled. So what do you think? AIBU to have my bridesmaids in black?

I had black bridesmaid dresses for a summer wedding! Black, white and blush pink were my colours and it looked amazing and elegant. Bridesmaid's were all different shapes and sizes so black really worked plus the dresses weren't too "bridesmaidy" meaning they could wear them again if they chose to.

Rosecoffeecup · 17/07/2023 18:09

I'd bloody love a black bridesmaid dress

thespy · 17/07/2023 18:10

I had dark navy (the first time!) it looked great - can't see that black is dissimilar. Didn't have any bridesmaids the second time but we had a black tie party so loads of black. Just do what you want. And look at this article to see how things have evolved:

I had black bridesmaid dresses eons ago. It's not a new or surprising thing at all.

ABugWife · 17/07/2023 18:13

Your bridesmaids will love you. Who can't carry off an elegant black dress.

Has she got engaged? Maybe she wants black bridesmaids dresses but doesn't want to "copy" you.

Daphnis156 · 17/07/2023 18:16

It's your choice of course, but if you are asking for opinions I know of a wedding years ago where black dresses were worn, and it is still being mentioned now, and not in a favourable way.
"It was like a funeral" being just one comment.
They are divorced now by the way.

My friend had black bridesmaid dresses, it was either late November/early December. Looked amazing and suited them all.

Yeah, my wedding will be mid November so later in the season for sure

Ask the bridesmaids?

Bridesmaids love the choice of black! They all echoed my sentiment of at least the dresses can be reworn to multiple events and black is flattering on every shape and size.

I had black bridesmaid dresses with lots of white and greens and sunflowers for a bit of colour. Everyone loved it and said how good it looked

This is basically what I had in mind too! The venue decor is gold and cream, and there are lots of luscious green plants. Flowers are all shades of white (white, ivory, cream, etc). The venue itself is accented with old fashioned brown-toned wood, and we’ll be having warm lights (candles, fireplaces, fairy lights, etc)

Are you in America? I’ve never seen black bridesmaids dresses in the UK but think it may be more common in the States because, as you said, the men are usually in black tie so it matches. I think evening weddings are more common too, which it feels more in keeping with.

No, I’m in Ireland

My bridesmaids wore black and looked amazing! The men were all in kilts and that provided a real mix of colour as they all wore their own family tartan. Never regretted it, go for it!

verabarbleen · 17/07/2023 18:27

I wore a black bridesmaid dress to a wedding it was very nice. Classy!

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/07/2023 18:28

Wear/make your bridesmaids wear what you want. The narrow minded stickybeakery of some people never ceases to amaze me. What an idiot.

No, she’s been married a few years now. Unhappily it seems from other conversations. Maybe she’s projecting?

I do know they might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I suppose no matter what color I chose, someone wouldn’t like them. A cousin of mine had cerise pink bridesmaid dresses back in 2005, and like that, they’re still talked about (unfavorably).

I know they wouldn’t please everyone but it was the visceral reaction that caught me off guard. It was like I’d suggested the wedding be done in a nudist colony

I was a bridesmaid, Nov wedding, wore a black gown, loved them, v classy, lots of compliments from guests. Chat to your bridesmaids but ultimately your choice.

TheNoodlesIncident · 17/07/2023 18:44

Nobody has ever walked into a black tie do and said, "Oh, all these long black dresses are like a funeral". Because the style is as important as the colour, and a formal dress like a bridesmaid dress or an evening dress are not reminiscent of funerals.

It'll look fabulous. Your friend doesn't have the same sense of style that you do, maybe she lacks imagination (and is quite tactless and overly candid frankly).

warblingwater · 17/07/2023 18:48

I wore a black bridesmaid dress 12 years ago and looking back on the photos it still looks elegant, not dated at all. Go for it!

There you go OP - dress your bridesmaids in black and expect divorce. You've been warned 😅.

I was a bridesmaid last summer and wore black. It looked really nice when we had our photo taken next to the bride - the contrast between black and white was very striking. I thought the colour and style of the dresses fitted in really nicely with the venue. The bride made black and white bouquets of dried flowers for us all too.

I honestly couldn't tell you what colour dresses the bridesmaids wore at any wedding I've been to where I wasn't bride or bridesmaid. Most people don't really care.

WotNoUserName · 17/07/2023 18:52

Everyone is going to hate it? So what if they do. It's not their wedding. The only people who need to like it are you and your husband to be.

I think it sounds great.

Are you me @WeeSassenach 😂

Another who had a summer wedding with white, blush pink and black.
4 adult bridesmaids all different shapes and sizes, all felt comfortable in dresses they chose and I paid for.

They have all worn the dresses multiple times since, and the shoes.

I got lengths of blush pink ribbon to use as sashes round the waist.

Your friend is talking out of her arse!

NoTouch · 17/07/2023 18:59

My first thought was oooh that sounds nice, different and the contrast would stand out. Reusability of dresses a big pro too.

Googled pictures of black bridesmaid dresses and honestly...........to me it looks a bit flat, dull and boring, especially next to the groomsmen also in black.

Sorry.

Belizenavidad · 17/07/2023 19:00

If you like it, you have it! Its no one wedding but yours! If guests/family/friends don't like it screw them!

Blossomtoes · 17/07/2023 19:01

It will look amazing. I went to a wedding once where the bride was in black. Your friend would have died of shock.
