Sick of feeling ill but GP isn't being helpful

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2023 12:06

I'm going through a phase of consently being/feeling ill. Right now I have cold type symptoms - mildly sore throat, stuff nose, wiped out.

I'm having the same every few weeks though and it's really starting to worry me (and have an impact on my life!) Just feel shit a lot of the time!

Had bloods done in April and everything was fine. GP suggested it's anxiety but I have real physical symptoms!

Honestly not sure what to do next - and I'm scared stiff that it's something serious that's being missed!

seasonal allergies/hayfever?

try taking cetirizine and see if that helps.

gamerchick · 17/07/2023 12:10

Sounds like allergies to me. Have you explored that?

PlainOldEmmaJane · 17/07/2023 12:11

What bloods did they check specifically?

BarchesterTowels · 17/07/2023 12:19

Do you have small children? When mine started at nursery they immediately started bringing back every virus under the sun, DP and I who are normally impervious to bugs were constantly under the weather.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 17/07/2023 12:20

Quite likely to be allergies/hay-fever. Can be treated with OTC stuff- ask a pharmacist?

ForeverFriendsAndPierrot · 17/07/2023 12:21

What more do you want from your gp though?

Dontlistitonfacebook · 17/07/2023 12:23

What specifically are you worried about? A specific underlying reason?

It might be helpful to discuss that with your GP. They may be able to set your mind at rest.

widowtwankywashroom · 17/07/2023 12:25

What do you want your GP to do exactly?

Ellewoods20 · 17/07/2023 12:30

Like others said it could be hayfever. Or it really could be anxiety. I get the same symptoms when stressed.

SallyWD · 17/07/2023 12:33

I agree it sounds like allergies. I personally am very prone to colds so often have sore throat, runny nose etc. I've had two cold this month, one or two last month etc. It's just completely normal for me. I don't think there's anything the doctor can do. If yours is recent it does sound like seasonal allergies.

Dulra · 17/07/2023 12:33

I am similar, I have also had bloods done and everything is fine. I think I am just a bit run down which is effecting my immune system so constantly picking up bugs.

honeyandbutterontoast · 17/07/2023 12:43

were your bloods fine though?
did you get the results and look through them yourself? Because fine can mean just within the range of normal which is really not fine at all and sometimes even outside range you can be told they are fine.

Really worth having a look at them yourself and checking everything is optimal.

FreeBagofB00ks · 17/07/2023 12:49

Do you have pets ?

Are you getting enough sleep ?

endofthelinefinally · 17/07/2023 12:51

Allergies?
Have you got a CO monitor and is your boiler regularly serviced?

INeedAnotherName · 17/07/2023 12:54

What did they test with your bloods?

I would start with the self-help route of trying an antihistamine to see if that helped (this year has been a bad pollen year). Take a good multivitamin with iron every day for a minimum of 3 months. Take an extra Vit D. Cut down on anything sugary.

Do you have young children, or near them for your job? They are little petridishes of germs at times.

Are you stressed atm though? New job, awkward colleagues, bad neighbours, unhappy relationship? Going to bed late, or waking up in the night can also lower your immune system. It can be a bugger to pinpoint the trigger especially since its normally more than one.

Could you explain your reasoning further? If you are in the range values, 95% of the normal population have values like this, so it is fine (with reference to the second part of that sentence, by definition, this means that 5% of normal people will be outside the range, which is why that part of the sentence can be true).

Ovinnik · 17/07/2023 13:08

I know you won't want to hear this but anxiety can cause 'real' physical symptoms.

Correlation · 17/07/2023 13:11

@Ovinnik beat me to it

honeyandbutterontoast · 17/07/2023 13:11

@ApiratesaysYarrr
for example the range for b12 I think is something like 180-600 (this is dependent on where in the country you are. This range has been lowered over the last few years. The chances are once you hit 181 you already are very deficient with a lot of symptoms (the op doesn’t have these). It is well known that you can have deficiencies even when you are above this number. In fact once you hit that 180 you could be seriously ill and never fully recover.

The same is true for vitamin d, folate, ferritin. All of these you can be deficient long before you hit that magic number. So it is always worth checking your tests and trying to make sure these things are optimal, not just scraping in.

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2023 13:16

I take a good daily multi vit/min and separate iron (not overdosing, checked with my GP who happy that it's appropriate.)

Eat a decent diet - not the best but not just processed crap either.

Bloods did (I think) iron, thyroid, diabetes, b12. Annoyingly they're not showing up in my NHS app so i can't double check!

I have two cats. Symptoms are the same if I'm around them or not. No other pets.

Boiler is brand new (well, installed in December) and the flat has a built in CO2 moniter (but i feel the same when I'm away from the flat too)

I go to bed feeling okay and wake up feeling ill. Changed my pillows, new mattress, changed the washing powder I use.

Have two young nephews so i could be getting stuff off them, but both are fine at the moment and I feel like crap!

I don't think it's anxiety - i feel absolutely fine until the symptoms start then i start to worry!

I have severe hayfever and feel like that all summer. Have you tried antihistamines?

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2023 13:22

No, i probably should try that - i had a weird reaction to cetirizine in the past so have avoided them but will pick something different up tomorrow and give it a try!

Try fexofenadine which you can buy in any pharmacy. Saves me more often than not!
