Sick of feeling ill but GP isn't being helpful

QuestionableMouse · 17/07/2023 12:06

I'm going through a phase of consently being/feeling ill. Right now I have cold type symptoms - mildly sore throat, stuff nose, wiped out.

I'm having the same every few weeks though and it's really starting to worry me (and have an impact on my life!) Just feel shit a lot of the time!

Had bloods done in April and everything was fine. GP suggested it's anxiety but I have real physical symptoms!

Honestly not sure what to do next - and I'm scared stiff that it's something serious that's being missed!

Wow, yes that is low. No wonder you feel wiped out.

Highflow · 24/07/2023 11:24

But your original ferritin and b12 were in range?

QuestionableMouse · 24/07/2023 12:30

April was several months ago?

Well that's good that you are finally getting some pieces of the puzzle. Wow ferritin of 6 is very low, little wonder you were feeling so poorly. I should give you some of mine as it's too high! I hope you get your B12 elevated & the coeliac is negative. I believe diabetes can cause low ferritin and b12 too. All the best @QuestionableMouse

QuestionableMouse · 24/07/2023 15:56

Tested negative for diabetes thank goodness!

Just looked at the letter I got last time and it says "within range" but I'm guessing that it means "at the bottom end of normal range".

Got some iron and B12 today, so hopefully it'll perk me up a bit!

Well done for getting to the bottom of why you've felt so bad. This sounds fixable Smile

honeyandbutterontoast · 25/07/2023 07:02

Sounds like an absorption problem as you said earlier on the thread you were taking a multi vitamin.

I expect your last tests were at the very bottom of the range which is why it’s always good to know the actual figure.

At this stage you are looking at about 6 months to get that ferritin up to a half decent level, really you need to push for a haematology referral as you need an infusion.

And if your b12 is low because of an absorption issue then all tablets will do is put lots of b12 in your body that you can’t utilise. Thereby showing a falsely high reading on future blood tests even though your symptoms remain. You need a course of loading injections taken in conjunction with folic acid tablets (b12 needs folic levels high to work).

Get the drs to email your blood results to you from this test and the last, and then go back and get some proper treatment.

Cant remember if you said you had COVID but that could have been the start of it all.

hope you are soon feeling better

Whataretheodds · 25/07/2023 07:14

Really glad you've found something that sounds relatively straightforward to address OP.

I didn't see any posters saying 'it's just anxiety'. I saw 'anxiety causes real physical symptoms' which is true.

If you are also suffering from anxiety please do seek help - it has a knock- on impact on your immune system which would exacerbate any issues from low b12, low iron, or coeliac.

BigGreen · 25/07/2023 07:19

Don't you need an infusion for a ferritin of 6?

Hufflemuff · 25/07/2023 07:42

Get more bloods done and insist on the FULL works. If nothing else it will put your mind at ease. I was similar to you - my bloods were ok in March, then in June I ended up hospitalised and have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

My point being, things can change. If you've been feeling poorly since March time something could be up and you can't rely on a blood test in April for reassurance, you need an up to date one.

@ApiratesaysYarrr
for example the range for b12 I think is something like 180-600 (this is dependent on where in the country you are. This range has been lowered over the last few years. The chances are once you hit 181 you already are very deficient with a lot of symptoms (the op doesn’t have these). It is well known that you can have deficiencies even when you are above this number. In fact once you hit that 180 you could be seriously ill and never fully recover.

The same is true for vitamin d, folate, ferritin. All of these you can be deficient long before you hit that magic number. So it is always worth checking your tests and trying to make sure these things are optimal, not just scraping in.

You’re just scaremongering.

honeyandbutterontoast · 25/07/2023 07:46

Sorry no I’m not scaremongering. I’ve battled a b12 deficiency for years and it’s a serious issue.

Also that link says exactly what I said, loading doses.

Apologies I just wrote my message without checking all other messages in thread but im so glad you basically took my advice without realising and got bloods done! So that will show all the people winging on about anxiety!

Iron infusions will make you feel AMAZING honestly. I have to have them may be 3 or 4 times a year when I'm flagging low and the change in me is incredible.

Can i finally just suggest/ask 1 more thing - did the GP suggest how you're anemic!? You are essentially loosing blood from somewhere. Can you provide a stool sample to rule out stomuch/bowel related blood loss. Even if you can't see it you can loose blood in poo and it doesnt need to be a lot to count. Please check xx

It's interesting that you mention periods too - i have mine right now and it's like my body has gone haywire! 🙁

Are you sure the temperature isn't hot flushes? Any other symptoms from the peri menopause list?

I'm 10 years older than you, but have all of your symptoms, colds, flu, run down, hot etc.

Mine are all linked to high histamine and peri menopause.

What birth control are you on or using?

dreamonlucid · 25/07/2023 07:55

Arhh ignore my post! As you were.

Allergies?
Have you got a CO monitor and is your boiler regularly serviced?

Good call. When I relocated many years ago, I was in a rented flat for 15 months before I got a buyer for my house.

I felt really unwell for months, with a perpetual sore throat, headaches, fatigue etrc. Then I found that the gas fire in the living wasn't properly fitted and was leaking CO. Landlord got it sorted and I felt better almost immediately.

CashmereDarling · 25/07/2023 09:37

Has anyone so far suggested long COVID? Last year I found I was coming down with a virus/short illness like clockwork every 3 weeks for a few months, then it just stopped. GP agreed that long covid was a possibility 🤷🏻‍♀️
