AIBU to be annoyed by DP reaction?

Name change, but basically there was one of those ‘nonce stings’ near our house. I told DP I thought they had done a great job and DP exploded. Started shouting and effing and blinding about how it shouldn’t be allowed.

Basically, AIBU to be a little miffed?

What the fuck is this thread??

‘Nonce stings’, and ‘retards’…?!

The vigilantes mean well I’m sure, but they completely destroy police investigations, hardly ever is their ‘evidence’ admissible and they often lose complete control of the situation, creating another police matter which requires more resources.

I’m for it personally. I think people who are against it are just part of the usual pc ‘I believe in anything the bbc tell me ‘ brigade.
it doesn’t effect criminal proceedings. Half of the pedophiles caught would have never been caught without it being brought to light, or were released after a precious conviction for raping children and or sharing child abuse images.
a neighbour down the road from us was a 3xs convicted pedophile, my husband had reported him years before because during a viewing of his house at work he discovered some vile evidence in his home and a teenage boy (unrelated to him) living there. The police did nothing. He was later caught by a pedophile sting, charged and sent to prison and is still there now, kept safe away from harming anymore children.
I think people have rose tinted ideas about how easy it is and how common it is for pedophiles to be put In prison, it’s really not! They walk amongst us every day on every corner. The police know who these people are, but they don’t have the capacity to keep them locked up forever and the sentences are minimal. The husband of someone I know was convicted 6 times for possessing images of abused babies, his sentences for 2 months at a time!.

in actually quite sickened at the amount of pedophile apologists on here. It’s alarming!

Can you point out who the lead phone apologists are and why?

*’m for it personally. I think people who are against it are just part of the usual pc ‘I believe in anything the bbc tell me ‘ brigade.

OH THE IRONY form someone else hi believes some thick thug just because they point the finger.

it doesn’t effect criminal proceedings.

Oh bless your heart, you know nothing. Nothing at all. Of course it does and it has. Look at how Tommy Robinson fucked the trial of someone who may well be a pedophile walking free now.

WeetabixTowels · 17/07/2023 08:56

That’s rubbish, you’re just parroting what you’ve heard on tele.

As opposed to the local vigilante thugs?

The police do absolutely nothing to help protect children.

Yeah pedophiels are never ever caught. Ever.

They turn a blind eye because they’re powerless.

They are the only body with the power of the actual law but OK.

These men would have walked the streets without anybody knowing how dangerous and disgusting they are

You REALLY think with all the police intelligence, forensic abilities, skill sets and powers they need some influencer-wannabes who go off rumours to assist them with investigations? Hilarious

WeetabixTowels · 17/07/2023 08:59

Mumtothreegirlies · 17/07/2023 02:06

Incredible how many ‘wrong’ address, wrong name, wrong man scenarios there have been on MN. It’s like everybody on here knows someone who’s house has been burned down due to pedophile stings it’s uncanny!!

Yep. Because that’s what happens when vigilante groups take over.

read how actually these ‘hunters’ are more harmful than helpful for children. They don’t keep them safe at all

I saw a video only this morning of a random man who videotaped his confrontation with a 45ish yr old man with whom he’d been texting. The man was an office-holder in the state legislature and apparently thought he was texting with a 14yrold and had arranged to meet up - only the videographer was there instead.
And then loaded it up to the internet.
I don’t know why, having all that evidence, the videographer didn’t just go to the police.
Hero syndrome or something I guess.
Excitement of “the bust” maybe.
The man ran off, but the camera-guy had all his info so I’m sure the police were notified.
Police do this, but now regular people think they can do it too.

He didn’t hand it over to the police because he cares about getting his channel views and couldn’t care less about children

DonnaBanana · 17/07/2023 09:05

For or against them I would be definitely have my suspicions aroused by anyone who had such a strong visceral reaction to them..

It depends on the context really. If she was pushing him to agree with her, then understandably he blew up.
Just as I would if someone kept pushing me to agree with them.

PurplePens · 17/07/2023 09:12

@WeetabixTowels I agree with all your points. Well said.

I would have a strong reaction to anyone pro-hunters. They don’t care about children they are about glory and they will accuse anyone they think will make a good FB video.

I forgot to post this earlier https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/paedophile-hunters-police-crime-law-internet-social-media-children-victims-a8723156.html

'How paedophile hunters make things worse for the children they want to protect'

The evidence these amateur groups gather generally falls far below law enforcement agencies’ standards

Mangogogogo · 17/07/2023 09:20

Most forces now work with paedophile hunters. For the last few years they have accounted for over half the prosecutions in child abuse cases. So I’m not sure where everyone’s getting their information from.

also, citizens don’t really have an anti-entrapment law so that’s not really an issue either.

anyway op, I couldn’t be arsed being shouted at for having an opinion by someone who’s supposed to be my partner. I’d also be slightly worried as to why he’s so vehemently opposed to them.

*fwiw I don’t watch them unless I have to

WeetabixTowels · 17/07/2023 09:22

Can you point us to a source for your information?

Because what does ‘work with pedophile hunters’ mean in practice? Of it means accepting information off them then that’s just working with the public and in that case I can say I have worked with the police before. Or do you mean they actively recruit the assistance of local vigilantes to help their investigations? If so what do they ask these people to do that they don’t have the power to do?

You are showing your total ignorance if you think that it doesn’t affect police investigations. I cannot tell you how many cases collapsed because of vigilante interference. You suspect someone? You take it to the police. FFS. People pointing that out does not make them ‘paedophile apologists’. Moron.

Sorry to hear that your Google's broken lol

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2000/aug/30/childprotection.society

@macrowave

Similar thing happened locally to me.

These vigilantes generally are pretty thick. Like sheep they'll follow the 'leader' who tends to be the loudest at shit-stirring. The followers probably don't even have a real grasp on why they are doing it (just like Trump's idiotic Jan 6th hoodlums)

I'm all for evidence gathering, but actually videoing etc. is just pathetic.

Well firstly, before you come on here on your moral high horse I suggest you a) read the thread and b) learn how to spell.

I'm frankly offended you have accused us of being paedophile (see the spelling there) apologists. Not one person on here has and you should apologise for that post.

Secondly, it's not us who believes everything the bbc tells us. Its idiots like you who believe tiktok and stupid videos which target vulnerable people.

I also think your two stories are absolute nonsense, for what its worth.

Educate yourself.

Sux2buthen · 17/07/2023 06:17

Believe that's a myth lol

It absolutely was not a myth. The doctor lived in housing near the hospital, which just so happened to be on the edge of a really dicey estate. The ignorance those people showed was utterly astonishing.

ManateeFair · 17/07/2023 11:24

Your DP is correct. Most self-styled 'paedophile hunters' are clearly getting some kind of weird kick out of what they're doing. They hinder police investigations, prejudice court cases, and don't have anything like the skills and resources to ensure they're getting the right person. I also find it quite telling that they focus their vigilante efforts on potential paedophiles, and not any other kind of child abuser.

They just want attention on social media and are intellectually challenged thugs, usually. It’s not about protecting children, it’s about stupid people thinking they’re great.

Perhaps you could explain that to the families of tne man earlier in this thread who committed suicide or the PP who gave a very good reason as to why she fears these groups. Dont be ignorant.
Or feel free to come.out and imply Ops.parter is a paedophile, whichever., or the many of us in this thread who have been strongly against them.

Your post is nonsensical anyway as why would someone suspect be for them...

You mean like the two made up paedophile stories in your post?

Do you usually discount the stories of victims and make up things in order to glorify idiotic thugs on tiktok?

I'm also interested in your qualifications in criminal law so you know how it doesnt 'effect, (lol) criminal proceedings?

ManateeFair · 17/07/2023 11:31

They don't.

Believe that's a myth lol

No it isn't. It's the reason that a lot of paediatricians, if appearing on television for any reason, are captioned/described as a 'children's doctor' instead of using the word paediatrician.

daverday · 17/07/2023 11:32

In my area one of the self-styled "Paedophile hunters" ended up in court for possession of images of children- he claimed he was doing some research for his hobby. He also convicted of harassing and assaulting a reporter who tried to ask him difficult questions.
