To think shop workers shouldn’t have to deal with this?

Overheard in higher-end supermarket this afternoon. A boomer-age woman shopper being helped by a student-age woman shop employee. As you do in supermarkets, we seemed to be taking the same route around the aisles so I overheard their convo a few times.

Employee repeatedly and calmly tried to help shopper: E.g, finding items, comparing prices. Shopper complains loudly, rudely and vociferously about: finding items items in shop. Availability of items on her list. Price of items. Whereabouts of staff. Whereabouts of employee as if she should be by her side throughout and acting as her personal shopping helper.

The poor employee, to her credit, kept her cool throughout this barrage and seemed professional. I was shocked by the level of vitriol and abuse. Her calm demeanour seemed to imply she was used to this kind of treatment. I almost said something (along time lines of “are you ok? You shouldn’t be speaking to her like that” but was with young DS and didn’t want to embroil him in a scene. I felt so so sorry for the employee.

Is there anyone here who acts like this toward people in shops? Is this in any way explainable? Or acceptable? I am shocked.

YABU for saying boomer age.

Thank. You.

You wouldn’t routinely include someone’s race in a post, so why would you include someone’s age?

Exactly. Ageist.

Maireas · 16/07/2023 20:33

You're right, @Catusrusty . It's a way to stop women speaking out.

When I was a student 20 years ago I worked in MKOne (remember that shop 🤣) and we had in the changing rooms those lamp fittings that were semi circles with the flat side facing up. At least once a week we’d find a shit in one 🤮

That is vile. Who the hell cleans that up?... Although I think I can guess. Poor you.

chineapplepunks · 16/07/2023 21:12

YADNBU! I remember when I was 17 and working in sainsburys, I used to have adults shouting at me. On more than one occasion I hid in the back and cried. If you truly want to see how rude people can be, work in a supermarket on a weekend!

More people seem annoyed at the use of the word boomer than the fact sales assistants routinely get treated like shit.

User1864876 · 16/07/2023 21:54

This is why you shouldn't put derogatory terms in the OP because it derails from the subject matter.

YABU for saying boomer age.

It's from 'Baby Boomers'. It's not an insult.

Yes it is. Just like there is nothing inherently wrong with the word ‘fat’. But if you call someone fat it’s and insult.

YABU for saying boomer age.

Absolutely - not even relevant. Honestly the boomer hate on here is ridiculous.

dontjudgemeagain · 16/07/2023 22:36

The OP has said they won't use 'boomer' again. Doesn't stop some posters from pulling them up on it over and over again.

In response to your post, OP: I haven't worked in a shop for years but I still tear up thinking about the person who screamed at me on the shop floor because the pricetag was wrong. I really feel for the assistant and hope she had a better day after!

Mrsjayy · 16/07/2023 22:39

I'm not defending Boomer I've been called one I'm 52 ! It just seems to be slang for an older person it's like saying a millennial, the thread was derailed but hopefully the op won't use it again.

Christmas Eve 2007, I had a lady ram her fucking trolley into me as I was working in a supermarket. She had a face of thunder, it was busy and I dared to be working in her way. Hmm Retail is horrible in my experience, people treat you as if you are a lesser species. I feel for them and I'm relieved my retail days are over.

YANBU

I work in a supermarket. Every week, at least once, people complain about the prices, the lack of stock, lack of staff etc. I tell people that pricing is beyond my remit and if they wish to discuss the stock or staffing levels they need to speak to a manager.
I work on a checkout, and we get this all the time, along with 'Why have you stopped selling XXX' 'when will you have YYY back in?' and 'you need to get more staff on here' (checkouts).
Stock, incoming orders and staffing levels are nothing to do with us. We're just as sick of being berated for things that are entirely outside our control.
I tell them, very politely, that if they need to raise an issue, please go to customer services, who will get a manager to come and speak to them.
At least they can explain why we don't stock something any more, when a delivery is due, or why we have four people off sick/on holiday.
And as a manager in a previous (not retail) role, people seem to take information much better from someone they perceive as 'senior' than someone at grass roots level. Even when it's exactly the same information.

You are being ageist as I am sure you know
