Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

Completely agree with you. This is a film that has been clearly marketed to children - even Margot Robbie has talked about how great it is for younger children. The trailer, which we saw during every trip to the cinema with our six-year-old, was cheeky but compelling. From what I’ve read, it’s mostly the language that’s an issue. We won’t be taking our daughter but feel annoyed for getting her excited about it.

Re. the original question on this thread, I suspect the party organiser might be changing their plans…

I’m taking my kid (similar age.) I read the BBFC notes and I don’t find it a problem. The whole ‘character goes from their world into the real world’ thing is quite a common theme of films. Innuendo will go over kids’ heads. Swearing is mild. The violence is when a man smacks Barbie and she punches him.

nasanas · 16/07/2023 13:24

Because she has been invited to the party? It's fine for OP to ask opinions.

Surely you would use your common sense. Mind you I think OP has been put in a awkward position by the parents of the birthday child so I have sympathy there as you don't really want to be the parent that turns down an invite.

I'm surprised so many people think a satirical film aimed at adults is suitable for their small children. I think there are going to be lots of incredibly bored, disappointed kids at the cinema when it comes out.

I also wonder how many parents will go on to complain about the film being completely inappropriate for their kids.

ProperChocolate · 16/07/2023 14:01

Most innuendo will go over their heads. Its marketed to kids and the 12a rating is a get out clause for the production companies and theatres against all the precious woke easily offended people

I don't think it's anything to do with being easily offended. It's just not a kids film.

I would have let my six year old dd watch it without worrying about innuendo.
But the fact is, at 6, they haven't the experience or maturity or knowledge to understand the irony and satire. And whilst the bright colours might have taken her attention for 15 minutes or so, once it dawned that it wasn't really very interesting (to a 6 year old) and entirely not what she expected, she would have got very, very bored. This wouldn't matter at home because she would just wonder off, but once you've paid to get in you're committed to the 2 hours.
Well, you can still wonder off home, but then you've wasted money and the kid's disappointed.

I do think it's a shame. My friends wee kids are seeing the merch everywhere and want to go. Why market something inaccessible?

ProperChocolate · 16/07/2023 14:10

Wander off"" Not wonder off.

I haven't seen anything advertised at 6yo's.

Lots of teenagers and adults want to buy merch too.

willWillSmithsmith · 16/07/2023 14:12

It’s just very odd having a film like Barbie and then not aiming it at young kids and having bad language in it to boot.

bookworm14 · 16/07/2023 14:14

It has been trailed before the Little Mermaid and other kids’ films.

There are over 40 Barbie films aimed at children out already.

Just because it's Barbie, doesn't mean it has to be aimed at kids.

Have a walk into Primark

Lots of trailers are shown before kids' films - that doesn't mean they're child friendly.

The trailers themselves have to be age-appropriate but that doesn't mean the films they're advertising are aimed at that age group.

Have a walk into Primark

Well, our nearest Primark is over two hours away so I wouldn't know what they're selling there.

But Barbie is hugely popular with small children even without the film. Kids can still have all the Barbie related clothes and toys without having to see the film.

NumberTheory · 16/07/2023 14:24

I wouldn’t, not so much because of the swearing - it’s just language that they hear occasionally and know isn’t acceptable for them to say - but because the whole premise seems unsuitable for that age range.

If the party is a big thing socially for their friendship group, I’d do something else fun with them so it didn’t feel so much as though they were missing out. But most parties aren’t that big a deal a week after they happened and if they go to most missing out on one won’t matter at all.

Yes! I find it absolutely bizarre that they have made this apparently amazing Barbie movie but include inappropriate stuff. Why???? My daughters love Barbie but I won't be letting them watch it.

It really bothers me that they have taken this away from the kids.

they haven't taken away anything, not everything has to be for the kids.
It was never advertised as a kids movie.

Not all movies about "Santa Klaus" are for kids either.

If you go that way, Chucky is about a doll 😂

There's no lack of Disney, Pixar etc.. for the kids, can't we have a laugh that it's not child-friendly for a change?

Darknightsahead · 16/07/2023 14:25

Did absolutely no one look at the pictures from the premiere? No one took their kids…

wholivesondrurylane · 16/07/2023 14:27

I just typed "Barbie" in my Netflix Search, I am sure you can find something appropriate for a 6 years old in the list that came up!

I feel like I’m living in a parallel universe 😁 so if I see a film about a child’s toy marketed to me via a trailer before a children’s film I am to assume it is aimed at adults and I’m some kind of naive simpleton for asking my child if they want to see it? Because I should have somehow known from this context and content it was an adult film for adults?

I assumed it was a more feminist take of something like Enchanted (fantasy character comes into real world, starring a proper actress - Amy Adams) but apparently it’s going to be like those Peppa pig remix videos on YouTube that look like they are for children but are full of adult content. Who knew? I mean not me obviously, from watching the trailer before the little mermaid film 😁

The trailer I saw was clearly innuendo and it didn't feel like the film was being targeted at young children. Whilst being pink the theme was clearly more grown up hence assuming it was aimed at older teens, young adults and above.
I saw the trailer before a PG film though not a children's film.

I did wonder why M&S had put a kid’s Barbie pyjama top on an adult mannequin the other day. I’m sure a few retailers have got the wrong end of the stick, too.

Theres really no need to be that rude.

You don't think children of 6/8 will see all the pink merch and want to see the film?

I didnr say anyone had murdered anyone. I said it's a shame they cant go a d see it, off the back of my friends wee girl who was quite disappointed the other day. Wow. Such a controversial opinion..

Barbie has been around for over half a century - it's not just a kids toy.

I never said any of those things though.

I simply stated that it's a shame when it's something so familiar to kids. Really not that big a deal.

As for it being around half a century, that's being deliberately obtuse.
