Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

Do you really think grown women (who have money after all, children don't) would want to watch a film aimed at 6 year olds? I can't believe some of you actually think kids tv isn't mind blowingly boring eg I watched hey duggee with my niece and fell asleep Grin

gogomoto · 16/07/2023 11:56

@liveforsummer

Because it's aimed at adult it might actually be popular! I'm going with my DD's and dsd, it's an over 18's screening with Prosecco on arrival and "themed" canapés at local independent cinema

You've clearly never watched Bluey.

Yes that was my point

JustDanceAddict · 16/07/2023 11:58

Def not aimed at kids, my young adult (21) can’t wait for it!!

liveforsummer · 16/07/2023 11:58

Your showing sounds fab though @gogomoto

Qilin · 16/07/2023 12:00

Those who don't understand it.

Do you really think older teens and young adults really want to watch the type of barbie movie that is aimed at 6/7 year olds? They already exist, albeit in cartoon form. Unsurprisingly the YAs don't want to watch those. I've a 21y Dd who wants ti see this film. She wouldn't want to watch a regular Barbie film - hasn't wanted ti since she was about 5/6y.

This film is NOT a children's film. It's not marketed for children. The trailers make that very clear. And there is no reason why it should have been aimed at young children.

It's more of a parade type film. Aimed at those who played with Barbie as young children but who are now grown up. Imo it's not hard to understand why there is a market for that and why that kind of film might be preferred for the target audience.

Think of the Barbie Girl song. It's that kind of parody level I suspect.

How are the parents getting a load of 6 year olds into a 12A

Little girls play with Barbie until the age of 5. If they had made a film for 3-5 year old Barbie fans it would not have made any money.

It's no different from Marvel films being 12A - the Hulk and Thor are toys for kids but the films are for a broader audience.

It's up to you. I don't think they'd notice innuendo. I took my 6 and 7s to 12A superhero films.

Marvel comics were adult comics that then got watered down for kids the originals were very dark.

Foxesandsquirrels · 16/07/2023 12:12

I don't think its a kids film really. More of a parody aimed at teens/young adults

Jules912 · 16/07/2023 12:16

Eek, I hadn't realised it wasn't a kids movie ( although would've noticed when I booked). They showed the trailer in Little Mermaid so I'd just assumed it was a PG! DD is a similar age and I wouldn't let her based on the description.

SomethingFun · 16/07/2023 12:18

We’ve seen the trailer for barbie watching the little mermaid and spiderverse 2 so I’d don’t understand why everyone is insisting it’s being marketed for adults 😁

The dc superpets film did the bleeped out swearing and that was definitely a kids film. I dunno, I’m not a mad fan of kid’s stuff being made age inappropriate with loads of sexual references as I think it pushes boundaries that are there for a reason. But equally, stuff that’s a 12a now would have been a pg in the 80s/90s so it might be quite tame. And also, if it’s a party will they even be watching the film or just giggling and fighting over sweets?

12A is advisory only.
Any age can go. If accompanied by an adult.

What a strange (hilarious) thread.

That's not what they are doing. They are taking the Barbie concept & the themes around that & having some fun with it, in a way designed to interest adults, especially those who as children played with Barbies.

It's really not about sexual references which are not really part of it, or in a mild way.

It's the wider subject matter which makes it for adults & not a kids movie. Older children will get it so might like to go, 6 yos, who can't understand the lack of reality of Barbie, won't.

Why, exactly?

liveforsummer · 16/07/2023 12:22

The barbie trailer will be shown at all movies as it's being massively promoted. Films don't have to match the rating of the movie they are shown at just the trailer does. There will likely be a different trailer shown at adult movies content more in the 12A category

LadyJ2023 · 16/07/2023 12:22

None of ours that age will be seeing it

OneFrenchEgg · 16/07/2023 12:22

Just the outrage and ownership for five year olds. It's v amusing.

Mrsjayy · 16/07/2023 10:55

But yes they should have made it accessible for younger girls.

Can't adults have anything without it being kids friendly?

Figgygal · 16/07/2023 12:26

I've never for a minute thought it was a kids film tbh it's a comedy
My 6 yo won't see it as they wouldn't be interested

My niece is almost 7 and still loves Barbie. There's no age limit.

kiwivick87 · 16/07/2023 12:29

Am definitely not a precious Mum and pretty relaxed but I definitely wouldn’t take a 6 year old to watch that !

LizBennet · 16/07/2023 12:29

Tbh my daughter is 18 so it’s not a concern of mine (incidentally she’s taking her 15 year old cousin to watch it), but if she’d have been 6 and it came out I wouldn’t have presumed it was for children due to the fact it was played by actors rather than animated 🤔
