Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

No. Since when is 'The inappropriate content will probably go over her head' a reasonable excuse for showing a really young child a film that has swearing and sexual references? Confused

Needmorelego · 22/07/2023 10:35

The very last line would create very interesting questions from a 6 year old (I’m not going to plot spoil).
It’s not for 6 year olds.

poorlyarm · 22/07/2023 11:08

I was going to let my 6yo (boy) and 8yo (girl) see it. What's meant to happen if a 6yo hears the word 'crap'? Im sure they will survive!

My daughter gets really scared of anything remotely scary (she thinks Bambi and black beauty are terrifying!) so that is my biggest concern with slightly older films but should be safe with Barbie. I guess they might get bored if it's more adult focused.

Why? They wont understand it.

foreverbasil · 22/07/2023 12:25

Didn't read all the thread but having seen it would advise against young children seeing it. It's simply not a children's film and is in no way aimed at children. It's clever, feminist and thought provoking. I think it would be confusing and boring for a young child.
The marketing of it to open at the start of the school holidays is complicated. It is ideal for teens and could lead to lots of interesting conversations on the journey home ( as it did for us!)

Honestly I really really wouldn’t waste money on childrens tickets. It isn’t about barbie, it isn’t a live action barbie film. It’s actually mocks the whole Barbie thing. It’s a super political, feminism type thing, using the barbie concept.
I didn’t enjoy it all. I think maybe Im
just bored stiff of gender politics and cannot be arsed to engage my brain enough to give the film the thinking time it deserves. It’s weirdly bitty and the narrative doesn’t flow in a satisfying way.
Definitely one for adults.

poorlyarm · 22/07/2023 12:28

Maybe not if it will be boring for them.

I would also have judged the parents but the cinema was seriously at fault too. The parents should never have been able to take those children into the screen and the cinema failed in its responsibility to uphold a statutory age rating. I hope you complained.

No, I did not complain. Not my kids, not my problem.

poorlyarm · 22/07/2023 12:33

You can see why people would be confused though and think it is a kids film!

We watched the trailer at the cinema the other day and it seems pretty kiddish.

Needmorelego · 22/07/2023 12:48

@foreverbasil the release date is a worldwide simultaneous release one. The fact it coincides with the start of the English and Welsh school holidays is just a coincidence.

There are multiple trailers, but my favourite was the one with the shot-for-shot pastiche of the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey (which is also the opening of the film). That one gives a pretty accurate idea of the film’s tone in a way that others don’t!

Perhaps this is very selfish but the kids’ welfare wouldn’t be my first motivation in complaining in that situation. A child-free outing is a very rare treat for me and I don’t want to encounter young children in an age-restricted space like a 15 or 18 certificate film, just as I wouldn’t want to encounter them in a cocktail bar.

Rhondaa · 22/07/2023 13:03

I'm surprised at the casting. Ryan gosling is in his 40s and think Robbie is in her 30s, they look more like Barbie's parents. I mean Gosling looks ridiculous.

You think they'd have gone for a High School Musical style late teens aged cast.

KittyMcKitty · 22/07/2023 13:07

I thought Gosling was outstanding as Ken. It’s not really a High School Musical type film - for me the casting was spot on. It raised some big topics and was visually amazing.

Fun fact America Ferrera’s real life husband played her on screen one (I found the duo lingo bits v funny).

rubylink · 22/07/2023 13:08

I’m 25 and went to see it last night as I adored Barbie growing up (and still do now tbh!) There are parts I think children would enjoy (fun dance routines, silly scenes with the Ken’s fighting) but overall I think the main issue with taking a small child to see it is they would probably find it pretty boring! A lot of it would probably go over their heads in terms of storyline themes of patriarchy, womanhood, motherhood, sexism etc and yes it is 2hrs+ long. Better suited to a child 10+ in my opinion I think

You have hit the nail on the head without realising. They didn’t cast a HSM-aged cast because it isn’t aimed at a HSM-aged audience. The casting of Robbie and especially Gosling should be your first clue that it is not a children’s film.

immergeradeaus · 22/07/2023 13:10

I’ve seen it - it’s not a film for 6yos. Just because they’ll get bored.

Tbf I took dd to see elemental the other day and she was bored in parts and may not have got the message behind it. She still enjoyed the trip over all and I imagine barbie will be much the same

That's the whole POINT of tne film!

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 22/07/2023 13:34

I am new to this thread but have now read pretty much all of it, especially the latter posts from pp who have seen the film (I saw it last night too). I am fascinated that posters are reading the thoughtful, detailed explanations of why it is not a children’s film (and it really is not) and remain stubbornly determined to take their 6yos. I wish them good luck in their intransigence.

I imagine OP stopped reading days ago but I’d love to know what you decided to do about the birthday party in the end @44PumpLane.

I was agreeing with you and describing the previous poster, to whom you were replying, who had grasped a central point of the film without realising it.

WildUnchartedWaters · 22/07/2023 13:34

Calm down, was merely sharing my opinion.

So the point of the film is Ken is in his late 40s and not a youngster like we've all been led to believe for years. Got it.

Needmorelego · 22/07/2023 14:01

@KittyMcKitty not only was Gloria’s (America Ferrera) husband played by her real life husband he is just listed in the credits as “Gloria’s Husband” 😂
