To not know how the hell to turn on this shower??

Posting for traffic hoping someone can help!

Moved into a house with a shower over bath combo thing. I can’t get the bloody shower to turn on!

On the left side of the control is an on/off dial with a white button you have to press in to rotate it. But it won’t rotate. It just stays stuck on “off”.

On the right side of the control is a temperature dial, also with white button, and this turns around fine.

Anyone used a shower like this and can tell me I’m being a moron? I’m sure the answer is obvious and I’m just not seeing it 😂

Have you checked the shower head? I have a similar shower and thought it wasn't working. Turn out my eldest had played around with the shower head settings and found the one which stops all the water coming through.

Interesting - there was a bit of water leaking out of the middle of the hose part just now, so I wonder if there’s a problem there. Will check the head now

start the bath water running then pull up that round knob!

sonjadog · 15/07/2023 20:39

What happens when you turn that dial in the bath?

It just seems to operate the bath plug

You'll have to have a bath instead!

CheshireDing · 15/07/2023 20:41

The round knob is the bath plug to the other commentators

unfortunately I can’t help with the shower though OP. I bet a part is broken inside on the left

sonjadog · 15/07/2023 20:42

Is there anything under the tap on the bath?

CheshireDing · 15/07/2023 20:42

Westfacing that made me laugh 😆

UniversalTruth · 15/07/2023 20:43

Is there a logo on it to Google? It looks a bit like ours but ours is the other way round to what previous posters have said - as you look at it, the right side makes the water come out, one way for one head and the other for a different one.

Also, sympathy, when staying elsewhere I can never get the shower to work and have to do the betowelled walk of shame to find my husband.

Westfacing · 15/07/2023 20:43

Hope the OP isn't standing naked all this time!

Where's a plumber/man when you need one.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 15/07/2023 20:43

Get a towel or dry cloth and try to turn it with that. Mine is similar and gets really stiff, only way I can switch it off sometimes

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 15/07/2023 20:44

@dustofneptune that left dial that turns on the water is ever so tough on this shower, took more force than expected to get it to turn.

sixthvestibule · 15/07/2023 20:44

Try brute force, it’s probably stiff if it hasn’t been used for a while.

BatheInTheLight · 15/07/2023 20:47

Say the rosary ten times, wiggle your nose, wink twice, high five yourself, then turn on all the taps in the house... BOOM, one working shower 🚿

Haha I did 😂Filled it with one inch of water and pretended it was a Japanese soaking tub while trying not to feel like a child 😂

My similar shower control seized up on the water side a couple of months ago. Plumber diagnosed it was choked up by lime scale - we are in London with very hard water.

Yeah - ours got stuck as well and wouldn’t turn, but it was the temperature side. Try wrapping a few elastic bands around it to get a better grip and see if you can get it to turn? May need a plumber to replace the part or give it a clean.

HappiDaze · 15/07/2023 20:59

Any switches outside the bathroom ?

We have to turn the switch on to use the shower.

Ours is ankle height and red so as not to get confused with the light switch.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 15/07/2023 21:07

Take the shower head off and see if the hose has water in. If there’s water coming out even a little it’s more likely seized than totally broken. If it’s silted up banging it with something hard (think little hammer) might dislodge the grit inside.

I had a look - it's a Mira shower. Googled it and the manual told me to call a plumber, basically 😂

This is good to know! Thank you! I'll see if I can find some rubber gloves or something, maybe that will help me un-stick it

Ours seized up. I used some Viakal descaler, swearwords and yanking. It did move (backwards by the way).

I have a feeling it's this. Shower looks old and the house has been empty for months.

At least it's seemingly pissing it down with rain all through July, so I can just stand in the garden...

Frabbits · 15/07/2023 21:20

The dial on the left turns the water on and off. If its not moving it's broken or scaled up.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 15/07/2023 21:26

Get some loo roll. Absolutely soak it in vinegar and slap it on any joints. Wrap it in a plastic bag or cling film and wait for it to eat the limescale. Then force it.
