To find most threads about Brits tedious and stereotyped?

I just roll my eyes every time I see another one about "Brits" or "the Brits" because they're just so painfully stereotyped and usually based on this one person the OP has met who did this one thing that they've decided is a "British thing".
AIBU?

Brits are a hugely diverse group. So a bit silly really> (People usually mean Brits they don't like when they discuss the Brits and rarely include "Brits" from mixed heritage or younger people. However...)

And everyone measures others by their own standards - of course they do. What other "yardstick" do they have. Other people are "rude" if they are ruder than we are, "untidy" if they are messier than we are etc, etc

These nasty threads achieve nothing - although discussing and trying to understand the beliefs and culture behind certain behaviours is useful and depends understanding. So why do so many, (but not all), people from X tend to do Y? Look at their history, geography, climate... learn something

Indeed the UK is four nations all.have their unique qualities and traditions
Before we even add in the fact we are far more diverse than we have ever been with large groups of immigrants who have made Britain and the UK their home now some for several generations.

Have you all forgotten the near weekly bashing of Australia that goes on here? Full of dull uneducated and flat out wrong, racist, xenophobic comments about a whole nation.
we just had the thread where op was openly asking for the bashing of Australia and all its pp. then to cap it all off congratulating themselves on educating us about our own country of which they know nothing. they get a bit boring as well.

EvilElsa · 15/07/2023 20:33

To be honest I think every country gets it. I see Americans and "Americanisms" bashed on here regularly. Yes, it is tedious and silly.

Stillcantbebothered · 15/07/2023 18:37

Same Brit’s stereotype Americans, Australians etc on mumsnet.

They do, time and time again.

phoenixrosehere · 15/07/2023 21:16

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 15/07/2023 18:52

You mean like every single expression or tradition that MN disagrees with is an "americanism"?

Exactly yet that’s perfectly fine to say on here on a regular basis.

I have missed this. Where are these weekly Australia-bashing threads? All the ones I read say that it's expensive, a long way from home, and it's weather is problematic. All factually true.
But they also say there is a great quality of life there with good opportunities. Recently the threads I've seen are encouraging emergency service staff to go live in Australia because everything is better out there.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 15/07/2023 22:25

That Australia thread was really odd and did make me raise an eyebrow. But I don't think bashing Australia is a regular thing here, is it? I've been here a while and that's the first I've seen off it?

It was a thread where the op asked for negatives

Usually the U.K. has all that and Aus gets the go there vibe as you say

The posy is literally called “tell me everything bad about Australia”

It is quite regular, along with bashing the USA. Also, any other country ever mentioned in a post.

I don't dispute the odd one might have happened but you're saying they're happening every week. And I just don't see that. Posters seem very positive about Australia, the main drawback being that people miss their families. But I see as many people staying in or leaving Oz as I see staying in or leaving the UK.

saraclara · 15/07/2023 23:01

And of course there is a significant proportion of mumsnetters who seem to think that only Brits should be allowed on this forum.

It's funny to see them criticise someone for their American spelling or vocabulary, only to find that the poster is actually American and posting from the USA.
"But this is a BRITISH site"

It's regular. I'd say about 3 a year. They usually spring from a poster seeking advice about moving to Australia.

They are never started by Australians, unlike the recent ones about how shit the UK is these days, and there have been quite few.

echt · 15/07/2023 23:12

Sorry, that came over as Aussies starting the UK-critical threads - they don't. They're started by UK MNers.

Flibbertigibbettytoes · 15/07/2023 23:18

Yanbu in that there's no way of talking about any nationality without stereotypes because people are always different but the idea of nation assumes something is shared.

Yabu to think it's a thing specific to British people.

Yup. I’ve been quiet about it but glad you and a few others have said it. Americans and America get bashed quite often.

InWalksBarberalla · 15/07/2023 23:25

I think is a mumsnet thing. You've got the threads bashing the Brits, the Aussies, the Americans, the French etc, etc.

Maddy70 · 15/07/2023 23:27

Brits unfortunately tend to live up to every stereotype. I'm frequently embarrassed

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 15/07/2023 23:30

I wouldn't say 3 a year is loads. Or at least not more than any other anglophone country getting its fair share. Way less than Britain gets. US bashing seems to be pretty much monthly, for comparison.

The recent Australia thread was an odd one and despite what they claimed, I wasn't entirely sure of the OP's intentions. The thread felt like more of an anomaly to me, I think because Brits in every day life tend to have such a positive view of Australia.

Hohumitsreallyallthereis · 16/07/2023 00:08

I’m amused by this thread given the recent thread on Australia this week! Now that was tedious…

There is definitely more than 3 a year, I have seen numerous ones already this year. They often start out innocently enough, with someone asking about moving there, then suddenly everyone starts piling on about someone they knew whose husband's brother's butcher moved there, or else they went there on holiday in 1968 and it was dreadful. We hear all about the misogyny, the racism, how far it is from civilisation, how there is no culture, how the whole country is burning up etc. etc. ad naseum.

LordSalem · 16/07/2023 02:31

saraclara · 15/07/2023 15:31

I think Brits are every bit as guilty of stereotyping other nationalities, frankly. Americans especially. And lets not even go there when it comes to stereotypes of other cultures.

So yep, nothing really to see here. It seems to be part of the human condition.

Yep. This sums it up pretty well. We're a pretty transparent nation generally.

LordSalem · 16/07/2023 02:42

But also hilariously there are those among us who act like they're above the law and refuse to accept the stereotypes that they embody on a daily basis. So there's definite Brit stereotype denial going on.
"EEEEE GOFFF! ...I’m not a fuckin chav! You're a fuckin goff! I've gorra fucking knife in me sock"
We're a delightful nation until someone disagrees with the appearance of another, generally expressed in a way designed to cause offence (usually with max 3 brain cells on the go).
