Ridiculously petty things that you can’t even say out loud

TheSlowRush · 14/07/2023 17:45

I’ll start.

This has been bugging me all day but I can’t say it out loud to anyone as it’s really not that bigger deal.

Parking is a huge issue where I live, not many people have ORP.

My elderly neighbour got rid of her car a few years ago, we are quite close and she has a driveway, so it was agreed that I could now park over her driveway meaning I am pretty much guaranteed a space right outside my house, rather than having to park halfway down the street.

My lodger has now begun using this space, she works from home a lot too so it’s there for days now sometimes. WAAAaa 🙈🙈.

I can say anything as I will sound like a selfish loon.

Thought of another one.

Tony Bennett died today, before I had even received the BBC notification my phone one of my FB friends had posted “RIP Tony Bennett” this gives me the rage - WHY do people need to prove they know something before anyone else?!

How is posting something they found out before you trying to prove anything? It’s was said on social media and other news sites. Why does it matter how you found out?

MillieS76 · 22/07/2023 10:56

I could never say it out loud because it makes me sound like a dramatic teenager but the point behind it I think is serious!

My FIL clearly has a favourite grandchild, which is fine but he makes it so obvious. Nephew is almost 3, our DS is 20 months. FIL never plays with DS, but rolls around and runs about with DN. Calls DN his ‘wee man’, ‘wee mucker’, his sidekick etc- no pet names for DS, Barely held DS when he was smaller- genuinely can count on one hand but couldn’t pry his fingers from DN. We always visit the same day of the week at the same time and FIL will inevitably ‘be held up at work’ or ‘called out to help someone’ just as we arrive but he never misses a visit from DN on his set visit day- which we see from FIL social media posts

The petty part- a week ago he uploaded a 2 minute photo collage of DN on his social media with soppy song and there was nothing for our DS. It wasn’t a special occasion, just a random midweek post. I was livid as it’s just another small way of showing how the difference in how he treats them but how can you bring up a video on social media without sounding like a petty child 😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/07/2023 11:07

That sounds really hurtful, @MillieS76 - I'd be tempted either to do something really petty, like making a photo montage, complete with song, of your ds and your parents, and comment underneath how lucky he is to have ONE decent grandfather. Or you need to tackle it directly - polite but blunt:

"FIL - it is lovely that you love DN, but you seem to have forgotten you have another grandson. I am sick and tired of you constantly playing favourites, and if you want to have a decent relationship with both your grandchildren, you'll stop ignoring our son!"

That sounds really hard @MillieS76

I'd probably reduce the visits. Your son will notice the difference as he gets bigger.

If I give you something that is in a bag for life, especially if it's a Waitrose or M&S bag, I want the bag back. Pathetically stingy and petty I know.

I get my delivery mid-evening. Do you think they should pick it (with all the perishables) 18 hours before?
You cannot be quite unique, unique means there is nothing like it, so it's either unique or it isn't. This one really grates on me!

We pick all the day's deliveries by 9am usually, starting around midnight, and the chilled and frozen crates are stored in the fridge and freezer until the driver comes to put them on the van! So yes, they are picked hours before. (Waitrose)

Please, can people who hold neither a disabled or older persons’ bus pass leave the priority seats vacant for those who need them when there are other seats available? Obviously if you’re on crutches please feel free. But anyone without mobility issues, please spare a thought for those who have.

Could you bring it up as an insidious cheery joke that gets repeated just enough, just whenever he's not expecting it? Combine it with full-on flattery about his grandparenting skills the same way - it's always there but he never knows exactly when. It's not rational but then neither is the way he's acting.

When our disabled bay was painted the council told us it was not legally enforceable. That was about 10 years ago, then they changed the bye-law a couple of years ago, you need to display your blue badge (or have a digital blue badge recorded on their database) or you get a parking ticket, round here that's £100. Contact your council's parking enforcement and clarify local rules

asdfgasdfg · 29/07/2023 22:16

Similar to people not being ready to pay at the checkout. Drivers returning to their cars after paying for fuel taking ages to get in their car faff about with their bag and seat belt then starting the car and slowly driving off when there is a long q for the pump AND/OR leaving car blocking pump and practically doing a weekly shop in the kiosk.

Thought about it...and no, I'm not restricting my use of the more accessible seat only to days when I fit your internalised prejudicial image of what somebody should look like that has mobility and/or pain and balance issues but not a Freedom Pass. If I could stand up reliably, I would be upstairs in the first place, thanks.

Freedom Pass? I’m not familiar. Only you know if its difficult to find a seat further back, as I said ‘when there are other seats available’. Standing, or going upstairs wasn’t suggested.

I've just thought of another thing that irrirates me far more than it should:
Seeing and hearing one years old.

One year is just that, one year, not years!

lieselotte · 31/07/2023 15:40

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 21/07/2023 17:08

native German speaker here 😉

yes to leedl, definitely the authentic pronunciation. 👍

But no to Aldi with an al-sound like a calculator, that sounds very Anglo to me.

The “a” should basically sound like the RP/BBC English pronunciation of the word can’t. Just a bit shorter.
not unlike “cunt”, I suppose.

Well now I am completely confused!

Wikipedia agrees with me. But Wikipedia could be wrong.

Maybe it's a regional thing - what part of Germany are you from?

this is correct:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:De-Aldi.ogg

but it doesn’t have the same a sound as calculator (pronunciation in the link below). Sounds completely different to me personally.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/calculator

The two “männlich aus Deutschland“ ones from the link below are also okay imo.
The upper one sounds a bit unusual. The lower one sounds like it could be a bit Swiss (or maybe southern German?) IMO but definitely still authentic imo (not that I’m an authority 🤣)

Just seen a post on SM from someone who has a lot of children bemoaning the fact that there is "no village to raise their child" (as in they saying- it takes a village...).
They chose to have their children. They chose to live a nomadic lifestyle [have wealthy, young parents who can and will help].
Resisted the urge to comment and scrolled past but its really passed me off.

Members of the general public who don't know how airports work. I have to fly most months and just breeze straight through barely thinking about it. Until I'm hampered by someone not knowing where their passport is, what their luggage allowance is, whether they have liquids in their hand luggage, can't find their boarding pass on their phone. The list just goes on and on.

My daughter has been competently navigating airports, alone, since she was 14 FFS.

My husband seems to think I can't choose the food I like at a hotel breakfast buffet. We're just back from a weekend away. As usual I choose a selection of my favourite breakfast items. He comes back with a full plate, saying I brought you some sausages or mushrooms or whatever. I say I didn't want them. He's offended! Why oh why does he think I can't pick these things up if I want them?

Yes! I get "they've got sausages!"

yes I know. That's why I'm eating sausages... 🙄

And self-service tills, particularly people who pile up their shopping, pay and THEN start packing it. Weigh your fucking bags before you start and pack as you go, muppets.
This is my number one, I want to punch them in the head!

This has been explained upthread - we don't want to antagonise the machines, which cannot cope with bags even though they have the option!

juliej00ls · 03/08/2023 09:34

My lovely retired neighbours waiting until 7am Saturday morning to do heavy duty gardening/ machine based DIY. Then cheerily pointing out areas I could improve on regarding by neighbouring. Smile and nod.

Round my way, Waitrose machines are fine. Co-op machines are baffled by bags, despite having the instruction to place bags, and then continue, so they get weighed. Sainsburys machines sulk every time you add anything to the bag. ASDAs machines are highly temperamental and take exception to bags, shopping and your proximity to them.

There are a lot of people who just haven't ever flown before. Occupational hazard of being poor, I guess.

I'd probably be irritated by somebody fuming behind me.

In which case, if they've never flown before why on Earth wouldn't they do a modicum of research beforehand to learn how airports work?

Whilst something like this https://www.gatwickairport.com/at-the-airport/flying-out/check-in/ may make perfect sense to somebody who has flown hundreds of times, it doesn't necessarily do so for somebody for whom it is all new. And there's also the environment itself - huge buildings, noise, people, screens - they can be very disorienting for people who haven't had the privilege of racking up hundreds of thousands of miles from childhood.
