To stop eating strawberries

MissPop · 14/07/2023 13:39

I used to love eating a whole juicy punnet of strawberries all to myself.

These days they just taste so bland and they’re supposed to be in season. Even the really expensive ones taste crap.

So, no more strawberries for me. They’re not cheap either.

Am I alone in this?

Agree with the poster who said you should be able to smell them. They have been a bit hit and miss this year. I tend to buy Jubilee or M&S Red Diamond.

MissPop · 14/07/2023 15:02

How did I get to 34 without knowing about the strawberry sniff test?

I think I read somewhere that the British season started really late this year due to the weather in May/June.

I’ve grown some of my own this year - well, I bought some strawberry plants last year (that I had about 1 strawberry from) and abandoned them and they’ve gone mad. They’ve only really got going the last couple of weeks but the strawberries are bloody lovely.

Booths lancashire strawberries, room temp! Delicious 🤤

I've noticed they've been particularly bitter and watery this year, no matter where you buy them from.

I've noticed a couple of times that because they've been over-chilled they are on the point of being frozen and are very watery, this has happened with Lidl and Waitrose.

beguilingeyes · 14/07/2023 15:23

I think Strawberrys have been spectacular this year, I'm eating tons of them. My favourites are the Tesco Finest ones (Eve's). They are spectacular.

Make sure that when they've stopped fruiting you poke all the little runners into the soil and there'll be even more next year!

stargirl1701 · 14/07/2023 15:26

YABU.

Pick you own at a local farm.

Only eat them in season (UK).

SgtCatherineCawood · 14/07/2023 15:27

We normally go strawberry picking at a farm that's fairly local to us. This year they've added a picking fee of £1.50 per walking picker so for 4 of us that's £6 before we've even set foot in the field! Not this year thanks 👎🏻

Myfavouritecolourisanimalprint · 14/07/2023 15:47

YANBU OP, supermarket strawberries are horrible. I am growing my own but it's been a crap year for them - should have more space next year, so hopefully that will be a better crop

PinkIcedCream · 14/07/2023 15:49

YABU if you think anything you buy from one of the big name supermarkets is going to be of high quality.

I grow my own strawberries in pots and also buy the locally grown Irish ones and they’re absolutely worth it and don’t taste bland at all.

TheOrigRights · 14/07/2023 15:52

I've had plenty of very nice strawberries in the last few weeks from Aldi, Tesco and Sainsbury's.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/07/2023 15:59

I grow them. Its dead easy.

You haven't lived until you've had home grown peas. The difference is mind blowing .

When I’ve grown peas they’ve never made it to the pan. The dog eats the bottom ones off the plants, and the kids eat the rest straight out of the pod.

KPops22 · 14/07/2023 16:04

M and S best strawberries this year. I always have a sniff of the box.

Artycrafts · 14/07/2023 16:04

The only time they've ever been tasty, was when they were from my local farm shop. That was reflected in both the size of punnet and price. I agree that supermarket strawberries are bland so I tend to put jelly in with the fresh cream.

gamerchick · 14/07/2023 16:04

I grow my own. A few hanging baskets hanging from the line so the garden pests can't get to them and nom. Better than any shop bought

And last year. About 2 months behind in everything. Same this year as well.

Next year I'm adjusting planting stuff.

Totally agree with this.
I get mine from local greengrocer, they are never chilled, from a local farm.
DH and I eat a punnet a day, they have been absolutely gorgeous this year.

Lorrymum · 14/07/2023 16:08

I had a punnet of Scottish strawberries from Morrisons yesterday and they were delicious. I did the smell test first and they smelt gorgeous.I normally buy from M&S but they have been disappointing and overpriced.

JustMaggie · 14/07/2023 16:11

Scottish strawberries are delicious. Sainsbury's has them later in the season, towards the end of July/beginning of August

Takeovermylife · 14/07/2023 16:11

Always smell them before. They should be so fragrant through the packet.

Also, outside of Sheperds Bush Station the fruit and veg guys do the most banging strawberries for cheap.

They are there everyday except for Sundays, my mum comes down from Essex and goes back with bags full of fruit on the train.

liveforsummer · 14/07/2023 16:14

I got some in Tesco the other day and they were amazing. I'm in Scotland and perhaps they source locally. Asdas looked awful the same day so maybe just luck
