Wham.

2 years ago a book by Andrew Ridgely. Now a Netfix documentary and multiple appearances on Chat Shows.

I'm sure any Wham fan knows the history of how they met etc and those who aren't fans don't care.

There are loads of bands etc who met at school and formed friendships, nothing new really?
Why the obsession with Wham?

Does everyone love Wham?
What can they come up with next. Its in the past now?

I’ve voted YABU because George was wonderful and deserves to be celebrated.

Isn’t it the 40th anniversary of them forming though? That’s why they’re being talked about just now.

changeme4this · 13/07/2023 21:53

We watched the doco the other night. Wham was my generation but it was my older DH’s choice to watch…

so here’s my take on it… firstly (in most cases) media attention is usually focussed on the lead singer, and at least for me, GM’s life and eventually death just didn’t tally up, he should have had everything.

Not that the documentary went that far. To say it helped explain matters isn’t the right wording but I seem to recall the break up didn’t come across as amicable at the time (stretching the memory here).

I also seem to recall Andrew as being the shy one, so it was interesting to see a more perhaps balanced perspective of the group and their friendship.

either or, the music was fun!

sure it’s not going to appeal to everyone, although I did catch the adult DC watching it too! I’m not an Elvis fan but watched that movie and thought it was excellent.

Having said that, I don’t recall wham‘s music or otherwise being in the public domain recently or even since GM passed away…

any reason why it’s grinding your gears OP?

Lysianthus · 13/07/2023 22:04

It was George's (or would have been) 60th last week? I'm happy for any excuse to have his stuff played on the radio.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 13/07/2023 22:19

They made loads of catchy music, it's nostalgic for us 80s babies, they were a pair of charming young men with a lovely story, they were both very handsome.

I'm not a particular fan, but I really enjoyed watching the doc - so you are not right that only fans are interested. I thought it seemed from the doc like Ridgeley really wanted to make it totally clear that he supported George in his solo career and wasn't in any way bitter about the split.

Elvis1956 · 13/07/2023 22:34

Iya straight man who in the 1980s was obsessed with 1950s rock and roll. But whams songs were fantastic. Subsequently club Tropicana had become the soundtrack of the best holiday my wife and I went on.
The songs stand up. It's nostalgia, which given my love of the 50s I get and finally Andrew is actually telling his side of the story

DinnaeFashYersel · 13/07/2023 23:39

I wasn't a huge fan but I enjoyed the documentary immensely.

They both came across as lovely.

PetLove · 13/07/2023 23:43

Andrew wrote a book, big deal

The reason he’s everywhere is to promote the sales of the anniversary cd/vinyl, and docu. Like any artist does. He’s also personally raising money for charity.

Just because Wham had their day in the 80s doesn’t mean we can’t reminisce and enjoy.

CloverHilla · 13/07/2023 23:48

Why is AR and P&S everywhere? Because they're promoting the Netflix documentary, which no doubt Netflix want more people to watch & pay more subs.
Did you watch it? I don't think so by your OP. It's great a real insight into their personalities, and how despite what people thought at the time Andrew was the driving force. Without AR there would have been no Wham! And probably no George Michael.
Their friendship was so lovely, it really shines through.
Anyway, being a 80s child I loved it and would watch anything nostalgic for the good old days 😊

Clymene · 13/07/2023 23:54

Why not? The world needs more wham.

cocksstrideintheevening · 13/07/2023 23:56

Money?

Heathcliff27 · 13/07/2023 23:56

They're plugging a greatest hits album. It's pretty normal for bands/authors/actors to appear everywhere when they have something coming out

Appalonia · 13/07/2023 23:59

I watched the documentary tonight, it was really lovely to relive those moments and to see how genuine their friendship was. It was clear that George Michael would never have become the huge star he became without Andrew's support, confidence and frienship, especially as his dad was VERY discouraging about George's musical ambitions. Personally, I'm glad they made that documentary, it was a very touching tribute to both of them.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 14/07/2023 00:01

What a strange OP, just because a band is from the past doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate them today, do you feel the same about ABBA, the Beatles, the Bee Gees etc.? Should all music from the past be forgotten?

QueueEtwo · 14/07/2023 00:02

I loved the story about Andrew's dad & the post it! Wake me up up before you go go!

It was amazing & I confess to having a little cry at the end!

This 😁

StormCloud2 · 14/07/2023 00:12

LOVED the documentary and I’m not a massive Wham fan, but their music is certainly nostalgic and evokes lots of memories of my time being a teen in the 80’s!

I loved that AR told his side of the story, he always seemed the quiet one to me but this documentary just shows what a driving force he was and helped to catapult Wham to stardom!

It was emotional watching it, GM did so much for charity, it was a pity the controversy in his later life overshadowed everything else.

What a voice he had.

dovesong · 14/07/2023 00:13

I was born past the time that Wham was popular and still love them! I want as much Wham as possible and as much celebration of George Michael's talent as we can get. Off to rewatch that rehearsal video of Someone To Love for the millionth time...

StormCloud2 · 14/07/2023 00:15

The friendship they had was so touching! That’s what made it emotional for me. They were such great friends early on, what a ride they had.

Kiwiandstrawberries · 14/07/2023 00:19

I absolutely loved Wham and this thread has prompted me to watch the documentary ! That’s tomorrow night sorted for me …thank you 😊

JaneJeffer · 14/07/2023 00:34

It's Wham! As anyone who knows everything about Wham! should know 😜

LordSalem · 14/07/2023 00:42

They were a big deal, it's interesting to see the history of it. FFS even Mötley Crüe got their time on Netflix so long after The Dirt was released. It's not like it's unknown one hit wonders being shoved down your throat. Oh wait, reality tv has covered that pretty well over the years. Actual decades worth of success with an interesting backstory.
Go for Love island if you want some piss poor dramatic bollocks.
History will always be in the past love. That's kind of the point you're missing.

LordSalem · 14/07/2023 00:43

Do you complain every Christmas because the hit songs are from the past? Do feel free to write and sing us a new one.

Florenz · 14/07/2023 01:47

It's amazing how young they were, George had just turned 21 when Careless Whisper was released and that was his first solo single, he'd already been successful with Wham.
