Yes i'm joking.. but man, i wish it were possible. If she were at primary i'd probably consider it, but she's Yr9 and doing gcse stuff

This last bit of the school year is dragging so badly, and i am SO done with it.. i want the summer break already.

10 days left.

My kid's autistic. Dreading the holidays lol.

Snap. Mine hates it. She would rather school was on all the time and the same.

I thought of this post this morning when i had to prize my kids out of bed. They're both under 7 and are absolutely shattered!

For the first time I’m keeping Ds off rne last week. He is autistic and hates all the routine change which comes with end of the school year so we are going away then instesd.

he loves school most of the time but is ready for the holidays now!

Won’t you have to look after her more once the summer holidays start?

No, she's 14, and pretty independent, she does breakfast/lunch herself.

School holidays here are very chilled out.

I did do it with DS a few times, the last week or so of school was always SO stressful and meltdown central.

I'm wondering if thats why i'm finding it so hard, i'm so used to having to constantly be switched on, and on guard with him this last week or so, but he's finished as just done with yr11 exams, and been home a couple of weeks..

i think i've already mentally checked out as the last month or so has been a crazy time with exams, leaving do's, changes in his routine...etc. Kind of got to the end of all that with him and gone 'stick a fork in me'.

I get what you mean I have to drop and pickup my daughter who’s in year 8 to school everyday too as we live in a village miles away and the bus only runs at 7am and 6pm every day.
have you asked the local authority if she’s entitled to free transport? The only reason we don’t qualify is because there is a nearer school but we opt not to send her there because I work closer to the other school and that’s where her friends are.
im kind of looking forward to the summer hols but at the same time mine is 13 and going through a major strop era so it’s a double edge sword situation!

RampantIvy · 12/07/2023 13:47

There have been loads of cuts to school transport @5foot5. We are lucky that three different school buses pass through our village morning and afternoon, but it measn that unless parents can collect their DC there are no after school activities because once the buses leave at 3pm that is it for transport. The children can walk into the market town where there are buses that go to some of the villages, but there are none to the more out of the way places.

But unless she stays in all day every day you’re still presumably going to have to drive her everywhere? If she’s independent and 14 and doing the school run was really having such a negative impact on me, and biked and public transport aren’t options, I’d be sticking her in a taxi a few times a week to give myself a break.

Actually @RampantIvy even in my day after school activities were a problem if you were from one of the more out of the way villages, like mine, and your parents couldn't manage lifts.

I did manage one but I was fortunate that the very dedicated teacher who ran it would give me a lift home afterwards so I didn't miss out.

Veering off topic but I would love to know where or what sort of lifestyles mumsnetters have where they would nerd to drive their child to the school bus collection point!

I'm imaging the farms in America that are huge, but are there any mumsnetters who live so u rally that they have to do this? I'm fascinated and a bit envious of such isolated (possibly) living!

I grew up on a farm and our cottages were at the end of a dirt track. The farm it's self was on a single lane road about a mile from the main road where 2 busses ran a day. Basically anyone who lives up back roads will likely need a lift . This was not anywhere especially remote either. Surrounded by multiple towns and villages.

the only bus that'd get her there on time leaves at 7.15am and requires a change of bus at a big hub station 10 miles away, and costs £20 a week in fares... and is frequently late meaning the kids miss the connection.

me taking her is a 10 minute drive and peace of mind that she has arrived safe and on time.

Waiting mode is a bitch.
You can do this, it just sucks.
With you.

I’m autistic and have ADHD, a single parent and work FT as a teacher for children with SEND.

It’s exhausting this time of year but I think you’re being dramatic that it takes it out of you just driving her to school and back.

An ableist AUDHD-er. Well, that's a first for me.
Erm. If she says she's struggling, she's struggling. If you're not, bully for you.
"Suck it up buttercup" doesn't fix ADHD execution functioning difficulties.

there is transport here, but you either have to live outside a 10 mile radius of the school, which we don't, or have an EHCP, which she doesn't.

That can't be correct. By law, the council must provide transport if you live more than three miles from the school, assuming it is the nearest suitable school. Check their website.

PhantomUnicorn · 13/07/2023 09:48

@Quiverer you're right, unfortunately we are within the 3 miles, so still not entitled.
