Cannot agree on ‘fun money’ amount

Hello,

Me and my OH are both bad spenders and have decided to allocate a monthly budget for fun money. I am wondering what other people’s budgets are for this. We have a disposable income of about £1,350 between us once all bills, food, mortgage etc is paid. This is without moving any money into savings. I think we should put about 600 into savings per month and the rest can be fun money. He thinks that this doesn’t leave us with enough fun money (£375 each per month.) I think he’s out of touch!

AIBU?!

Please any guidance will be so helpful, we’ve never budgeted before and always end up wasting our money.

Thank you.

Yeah, I was wondering this also. How can you manage on so little? What about haircuts, nails, beauty treatments, new clothes? Do you never go anywhere or do anything?

I have £80/month just now and outlined above what I spend it on. I could manage on £50 tbh. I spend nothing on grooming, hardly ever buy clothes (when I do it's at the charity shop), don't go out drinking etc.. These things don't interest me though so I don't feel that I'm missing out.

Yeah quite a lot of people don't have any professional grooming, and new clothes would be rare or charity. I cut my own hair for 8 years and it was still nice, I am back at a salon now but it wasn't some big deal to me. For many years I had £10-40 spare cash a week.

Wow, how tone deaf to the current situation can you be? Some people manage on so little because they have no other choice. After bills are paid, theres nothing left.

Or they just don't want to spend money on nails, beauty treatments or new clothes. Some people can live without those non essentials.

I totally get that lots of people don't have spare cash for this but I was referring to those people who're choosing to squirrel it away (nothing wrong with regular saving btw) to the point where they leave themselves with so little.

We are unmarried with a 1yo. Yes it excludes our gym, dentist etc that is all covered by direct debits. Fun money would be for going out with friends, buying clothes, hair/nail apts, etc and any unforeseen one-off payments (parking tickets for example)

Thank you for all of these helpful posts, will definitely look into Monzo.

On that basis I think 50 a week is enough

Peacoffee · 14/07/2023 20:53

@jannier In the current climate especially with kids most can't afford the mortgage so don't waste on non essentials

This is quite dramatic, the idea what “most” people can’t barely afford their mortgage is actually not reality.
