Black bridesmaid dresses?

Would you choose black bridesmaid dresses? Why? Why not? Are they considered bad luck?
YABU = no
YANBU = yes

Getting married next August and I’ve always wanted a black tie, classy cream/gold/black theme. I’d love for the groomsmen to match the bridesmaids, and with the groomsmen wearing black suits, I’m so tempted to have my bridesmaids in black too. Husband’s suit is black too, and I think it’s all such a nice contrast to my white dress.

I just think it’s such a good, solid color and the dresses could be reworn so many times. But everything I read is about how wearing black is like mourning or bad luck.

I’ve been to a few weddings in the past few years that did this. It seems quite popular. I like it.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 09/07/2023 10:39

Bit overdone but if you like it, go for it!

WaitingForNothingGood · 09/07/2023 10:39

I think it sounds really nice. I wouldn't worry about stupid superstitions not that I've ever heard of one for bridesmaids dresses. You are really overthinking things if you are worrying about superstitions. Go with what you like

Black is also good because the bridesmaids are more likely to be able to reuse their dresses.

Orchidgal · 09/07/2023 10:40

Have what you want, but personally I think lots of black will give it a funeral vibe, especially in August.
Have you considered a charcoal grey, and a splash of yellow or another bright colour to lift it a little?

phoenixrosehere · 09/07/2023 10:41

Don’t see a problem with it and know it can be done well. Plus, it gives you many options on flowers and themes.

It’s a change from the usual pastels I see.

KimberleyClark · 09/07/2023 10:42

I think it would be fine for a winter wedding, but not a summer one tbh.

EvilElsa · 09/07/2023 10:43

I love a black bridesmaids dress.

That’s what I thought too! I have 3 bridesmaid dresses (from when I was the bridesmaid) and there is no way I could wear them again as they’re clearly for a bridesmaid. I’m thinking of donating them actually.

Whereas black is so versatile. It can be worn anywhere

I like charcoal grey, but not sure about what color bridesmaid dress I’d like with it.

I was also considering satin champagne bridesmaid dresses to brighten up the black

It was very on trend around here when I got married in 2005. I wasn't a fan of it myself. It all looked a bit too try hard or something like that. Everyone seemed to think they were very original with their black bridesmaid theme but in saying that I'm not a big fan of black clothes anyway . I do think it can look dreary and really doesn't suit everyone but I'm the complete opposite and absolutely love bright colours.

blahblahblah1654 · 09/07/2023 10:49

I was bridesmaid and wore one. I loved it! So flattering. I do love black clothing though.

LlynTegid · 09/07/2023 10:50

Colour, perhaps dark colour, but not black.

KimberleyClark · 09/07/2023 10:52

Colour, perhaps dark colour, but not black.

Deep midnight blue maybe.

SilkTrees · 09/07/2023 10:53

No reason why not. I think it's done quite often. But then I don't have the Mn popular superstition about not wearing black to weddings. I wore black to my own, and I've often worn it to other people's.

AutumnWedding24 · 09/07/2023 10:56

This would be another consideration

Deep midnight blue maybe.

I was at a black tie wedding recently where the bridemaid wore french navy dresses.
The plain sleevless round neck dresses were navy beaded on top, with layers of navy chiffon falling from the waist.

Absolutely stunning.
Definitely could be reworn, very suitable.

Nicest bridesmaid dresses I have come across.

Navy is such an elegant colour.

PegasusReturns · 09/07/2023 10:59

i wouldn’t worry about superstition I just don’t think it’s a great look especially for a summer wedding, particularly if any part of it is outside.

mynameiscalypso · 09/07/2023 11:01

I think it's fine. As a bridesmaid, I'd rather wear black than a champagne colour which looks dreadful and me (and a lot of other people with pale skin).

Humidititties · 09/07/2023 11:03

Winter wedding yes, summer wedding no. The champagne colour dresses are lovely

AssertiveGertrude · 09/07/2023 11:05

I love a black dress but got an August wedding I would go for something else (that said it would be stunning as black is so flattering and classy)

I love red dresses as bridesmaid but I went for a rose colour in the end for mine

Littlelovebug · 09/07/2023 11:10

No I love it.

I'm thinking of it to be honest. Mines a winter wedding and I'm having a vintage, jazz 20s era theme. Black would work perfectly.

Congratulations and good luck.

Flower0503 · 09/07/2023 11:15

My bridesmaids wore this dress, with an ivory shrug/bolero.

I think black is fine (I wouldn't raise an eyebrow as a guest but if I'm honest I probably wouldn't rave about it either). Navy/dark blue paired with cream/champagne would give the same sort of vibe (neutral, elegant and classy).

Champagne satin dresses would look beautiful, but only if your bridesmaids all suit the colour and have amazing figures. Satin isn't particularly forgiving!
