To think I should have been told this first?

My DD10 has just got back from a few days at her dads. She's told me her younger sibling there (who she shares a room with) has just got chicken pox. DD has not had chicken pox before and we go on holiday at the end of next week.

AIBU in thinking I should have been told about the chicken pox before she went so we could have had the option of her staying at home until her sibling was no longer contagious?

You don't know when they knew the kid had chickenpox. If they realised after DD arrived she'd already been exposed.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/07/2023 09:52

Absolutely dick move by her father. Chicken pox can kill or cause life changing injuries. Sadly there is a poster on here who lost a child to it.

The OP already said the spots came out the day before she went so she would have been contagious.

Blossomtoes · 08/07/2023 09:58

The mortality rate from chickenpox is vanishingly small and adults account for the vast majority of that tiny figure. Scaremongering isn’t helpful.

liveforsummer · 08/07/2023 09:58

If she's made it to 10 without catching it and the spots were already present before she arrived then you may be ok.With both of my dc it was 2 weeks to the day from exposure to spots coming out I guess only time will tell. Annoying but things like this can happen anywhere

ejbaxa · 08/07/2023 10:00

Of course you should have been informed in advance. Basic manners and decency. What a twat.

Duvetdweller · 08/07/2023 10:04

She may have already had it without you knowing. DD1 had it and exposed DD2 to it when they were little. I thought my DD2 had got away with it and then she got shingles when she was about 13 which was much worse than chickenpox.

Justplainsadmad · 08/07/2023 10:18

Will the airline let you fiy? Vulnerable people and children could be on it. And the risk of spreading is even higher.

@TappingTed We're going for 10 days and it's a 6 hour flight away.

@CatsSnore I could try but not sure how well it would go down. DD has been there on numerous occasions when the sibling has been poorly (including D&V), but is not allowed over there when ill herself!

Antivirals are only available if you’re immunocompromised or very unwell. They are not available as preventative measure.

You could give post exposure vaccine a go though. More here.

That is awful! I'd send her over with bugs on purpose 😫 if we share yours then you can share ours!

Definitely worth a phone call and an ask 🤞 and a phone call to the gp to see if there's any type of antiviral dd can have. Also, she might not get it, or she might get like two spots and be perfectly fine. See what happens before getting stressed.

anti Virals are not available in the circumstances.

I don't think it's a huge leap to expect 111 to have a list of pharmacies/private clinics of where the vaccines would be given. The vaccination is available for children for free on the nhs if they're around vulnerable adults. Not sure why you're seemingly nitpicking at me demented?

So will google. And they won’t know if it’s in stock or have any control over bookings. Why would they?

somethingischasingme · 09/07/2023 08:35

Please go for the vaccine. My dd had it when she was nine and was in hospital for 4 days and was extremely and dangerously unwell.

OddBoots · 09/07/2023 08:39

Oh how horrible. Have you already got holiday insurance that would cover issues that may arise if she has caught it? (I realise this is not the point, he shouldn't have done that but now it is done....)

I had chicken pox as a small child without it causing any problems. However, I still have post herpetic neuralgia from an attack of shingles that I had eight years ago. Extremely unpleasant. So much so that I recently spent nearly $600 on Shringrix vaccine for shingles immunisation.
So, yes I agree about shingles. Anything to avoid it.

I have a huge issue with people not sharing sickness situations. Yes you should have been told, it is absolutely not OK for you not to have known.
