AIBU to be upset that my daughters teacher took off 5 marks from her exam total because she doodled on the back of the paper while waiting to be allowed to leave the exam. She would have got 96% without the deduction. See attached the offending doodle. Teachers comment was "minus 5 marks for graffiti at the back. I have told you many times its not on."

She was warned repeatedly. She didn’t give a toss. She’s paying the price. Suck it up.

Is your daughter neurodivergent? I only ask because I am and I absolutely couldn't sit still waiting for everyone else to finish an exam so the doodling would be the much less disruptive option!

In that case I’d suggest asking for scrap paper to doodle on.

Jongleterre · 06/07/2023 18:54

It's always been the case not to deface an exam paper with scribbles or doodles.

Your daughter has no excuse as she has been specifically told not to do it.

She was lucky the paper wasn't marked VOID as I would have done.

GoodChat · 06/07/2023 18:55

What's a reasonable punishment for prolonged, intentional obedience then, OP?

GoodChat · 06/07/2023 18:55

Disobedience, obvs

Beargrumps22 · 06/07/2023 18:59

to deface an exam paper would not be something I would dream of doing. She had been told too and she should have been spending her time checking her paper not doodling. if she finished early maybe she had not have done the paper completely or to the bests of her ability

LondonPete · 06/07/2023 19:01

I'd have docked her 10%

PaigeMatthews · 06/07/2023 19:02

Teachers comment was "minus 5 marks for graffiti at the back. I have told you many times its not on."
i mean, she knew not to do it. Why could she not stop herself from defacing the paper?

OLDERME · 06/07/2023 19:02

Changed days from my time at school. I wouldn't have dared show my parents that paper. I would have been in so much trouble for disrespecting the teacher, and letting them down. I would also have had my pocket money withdrawn. O.P. I think you need to get your act together pretty sharpish. Does she realize that she could have had her paper voided? The teacher was doing her a favour. Your child is copying your entitled attitude.

WantToBeAMamma · 06/07/2023 19:03

Over the years some teachers have turned a blind eye to her doodling while others have let her know its unacceptable. She has tried now, that she is getting older to rein in her arty side but I guess with the stress of all the exam revision it made her forget herself. Apparently she has drawn on her other exams so will be interesting to see how the other teachers will handle this.

Deary me, you are still excusing her!

WonderfulUsername · 06/07/2023 19:04

The OP posting the photo is still making me laugh.

It's like she's thinking "But I'm so prhaaad of little Lily-Mae cos it's art innnit?"

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/07/2023 19:05

She's really not that arty OP.
Currently exam marking and any defaced or doodled on papers have to be flagged. Would you take the chance for your DD to fail an exam because you think she should be allowed?

threecupsofteaminimum · 06/07/2023 19:06

"Reign in her arty side" Hmm er, no, she needs to reign in her disregard for discipline side.

Aquamarine1029 · 06/07/2023 19:06

I feel sorry for your daughter because you are doing her absolutely no favours. Your daughter is going to have a tough road ahead thinking simple rules don't apply to her, and her own mother agrees. It's pitiful.

Firecat84 · 06/07/2023 19:07

Why is the teacher so anti art?! What a miserable sod! I'm with you on this OP.

GoodChat · 06/07/2023 19:07

How interesting will it be when she doodles on her actual exam papers and the exam board rejects them?

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 06/07/2023 19:07

I bet it's not a big deal as it was on the back of the paper and didn't affect her exam. However, she was told not to do it so it's a case of disobeying what she has been told

WonderfulUsername · 06/07/2023 19:07

She has tried to reign in her arty side?! 😂😂

Oh dear OP, do you think kids who graffiti toilet walls and town centres just need to 'reign in their arty sides', or do you think they need to do what the fuck they're told?

readbooksdrinktea · 06/07/2023 19:07

This thread is a good example of why I left teaching. You're just not getting it.

Maybe the teacher's just a tad 'anti kids thinking they're above the rules'?

Exactly. It's no wonder teachers are quitting in droves. The lack of parenting is astonishing, as is the number of thick people on this thread.

Irritateandunreasonable · 06/07/2023 19:11

Personally I really don’t see the big deal.

the pictures not offensive, it’s not rude. It’s just a doodle to kill time once she finished an exam. An exam she did throughly that she scored very high on.

It appears most disagree with me but my opinion is that the teacher is being a bit power mad!

ChristmasFluff · 06/07/2023 19:12

Why doesn't she use the scrap paper for her doodles that are available during exams - or which you can ask for?

How come she had her phone to take a picture during an exam?
