I witnessed a retail employee being absolutely vile to an elderly man today

This afternoon in a small branch of Lidl at the self service checkouts. Nobody was on the actual tills so no option to use them instead.

An elderly man needed some help scanning his shopping and was explaining to the employee overseeing the checkouts that he was partially sighted and was struggling to find the bar codes.

The employee was absolutely horrible to him saying being partially sighted doesn't mean he can't see and that there's a difference between being partially sighted and blind. Her attitude was vile.

She begrudgingly scanned his remaining items, as though he'd asked her to pay for them herself, and as he was collecting his change from the machine she sarcastically said "oh you managed to see that well enough did you"

I asked him if he needed any help and if he was ok and he explained that he'd had two surgeries on his eyes and couldn't see very well, and that he was only able to get about to the shop on his own as he knew and was used to it but struggled with the bar codes.

I told him I'd heard everything that woman had said to him and that I'm going to contact the head office about her and report exactly what I'd heard. He said he didn't want to make a fuss and that she was clearly just looking for an argument.

WIBU to report her to her employer regardless? I feel really sad about it and don't think somebody like that should be in a customer facing role working with members of the public. Horrible bully.

Report her
That's out of order

motheroreily · 06/07/2023 14:55

Yes I'd definitely report her.

Tontostitis · 06/07/2023 14:56

Vile woman

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 06/07/2023 14:57

I'd report her and put the time as well so they can narrow down who the employee was.

jc12689 · 06/07/2023 14:57

I would have called here out there and then while she was doing it.

MissEDashwood19 · 06/07/2023 14:58

You sound lovely! Definitely report that vile woman. Did you see her name badge? If so, give them her name.

Blossomtoes · 06/07/2023 14:58

Do it. What a vile excuse for a human being.

Mindymomo · 06/07/2023 14:59

Please report her, I appreciate your helping the man, but the shop needs to know how this employee has treated this gentleman.

strawberrywhisk · 06/07/2023 14:59

I'd have probably pulled her up tbh, definitely report her though, horrible woman

tiredmumma8696 · 06/07/2023 14:59

Definitely report her. If by the self service tills it is likely to be caught on camera.
Well done for helping the man. Flowers if only everyone could be kind

Podcats · 06/07/2023 14:59

Yeah I would have asked to see a manager straight away and reported it then in front of her. Ablist behaviour is no different to racist behaviour. What a scumbag.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/07/2023 15:01

I would have reported in store, and offered to help him. I've done this before in my local Tesco express where there are no staff on checkout

BreatheInBreatheOut · 06/07/2023 15:01

I hope you've now reported her. That's not ok and she needs someone to have a serious word with her, some extra training or not be allowed to interact with people again!

NotOnYourNellies · 06/07/2023 15:04

I'd report her in a heartbeat
What a vile human she is

purplecorkheart · 06/07/2023 15:06

That poor man. How dare she be so vile to him. Please do report her. There is no excuse for that behaviour.

HanSB · 06/07/2023 15:07

What a horrid person she is! Absolutely complain on his behalf, I'm glad you spoke to him, that's disgusting how he was treated. I would have told her that her behaviour was unacceptable and got her name and reported at the customer service desk to the store manager.

confusedallthetime1 · 06/07/2023 15:07

Where did this happen and did you get her name? I'd gladly make a phone call as well that is vile!!

princesscaraboo · 06/07/2023 15:08

Report her! Disgusting behaviour. That poor man.

Dotjones · 06/07/2023 15:08

Yeah I'd report them. I know it's Lidl so you have to make allowances for the attitude of the staff (and in my local branch, of many of the customers), but that's out of order.

ohtowinthelottery · 06/07/2023 15:09

Report her. My MIL I'd partially sighted but fiercely independent. I would be horrified if someone treated her like that.
Anyone who wants help at self service tills should get it regardless of the reason. Customers aren't paid or even given a discount to do the staff jobs!

OhComeOnFFS · 06/07/2023 15:09

Of course you should report her but I think you should have spoken to the manager about her immediately.

alittleadvicepls · 06/07/2023 15:10

Why didn’t you say something there and then?

I would go back in person today and talk to the manager who’s working today. He/she would know what staff was on when the incident happened. An email will just get lost.

Comefromaway · 06/07/2023 15:10

Tat is awful behaviour. I've worked in retail and know how hard it is but there is no excuse for such abelist behaviour and comments.

Denise82 · 06/07/2023 15:13

jc12689 · 06/07/2023 14:57

I would have called here out there and then while she was doing it.

Me too.

Alargeoneplease89 · 06/07/2023 15:16

Why witness it and not pull her up on it?
