To refuse to pay hotel for additional night?

Hotel organised our taxi to the airport. Taxi did not turn up. They couldn’t get anyone to pick us up as it was late. So we missed our flight.

We have had to pay for another flight tomorrow. Hotel we are staying at is empty. They said we could have our room back. But now they are asking for us to pay the £100 for the room for the extra night.

AIBU to refuse to pay? It was their fault we missed the flight. They insisted we used their taxi driver, and they insisted we didn’t need to worry.

its the taxi drivers fault, not the hotel.

yes you should pay.

Nousernamesleftatall · 06/07/2023 11:45

It’s not their fault at all. It’s the taxi drivers. Why didn’t you pre-book a transfer?

OhDoh · 06/07/2023 11:46

Not their fault at all. You need to pay.

wapwap · 06/07/2023 11:46

It is their fault. We pre-booked the transfer via the hotel.

They insisted? Yeah, I’d push it.

runwithme · 06/07/2023 11:47

But the hotel made the booking, not the OP. So either the taxi or the hotel pays the night

Mummy08m · 06/07/2023 11:47

Something similar happened to us and the hotel refused to pay. Said we should claim on our travel insurance

Sissynova · 06/07/2023 11:48

AIBU to refuse to pay? It was their fault we missed the flight. They insisted we used their taxi driver, and they insisted we didn’t need to worry.

You sound very passive. How on earth can a hotel "insist" on anything like this? You're an adult, it is your own responsibility to get to the airport on time. If you want to stay an extra night you need to pay for the room.

Frabbits · 06/07/2023 11:49

I think you would need to pay initially and then argue the absolute toss with the hotel/ corporate if it's a chain, or see if you can reclaim on your insurance.

Toottooot · 06/07/2023 11:49

Surely once the taxi was however late you would have tried calling another firm to book a taxi. You needed to take a bit of responsibility here.

wutheringkites · 06/07/2023 11:49

In what way did they insist?

What country are you in?

Sissynova · 06/07/2023 11:49

wapwap · 06/07/2023 11:46

It is their fault. We pre-booked the transfer via the hotel.

It won't be their fault. Look at the ts&cs of the transfer.

No transfer company is going to take responsibility for a missed flight.

PercyPigInAWig · 06/07/2023 11:49

It is their fault, you wouldn't have booked that taxi driver otherwise. But I wouldn't listen to them if they insisted on using a service linked to them if I could source my own preferred service.

We stayed in a hotel who could arrange transfers but couldn't guarantee car seats, so we booked via a company that could.

wapwap · 06/07/2023 11:51

It’s a very small island. It’s not as simple as arranging another taxi when none were open. We called everyone.

OP posts:
wutheringkites · 06/07/2023 11:53

Do you think it might have been a stitch up to make you pay for another night?

Mabmabdwarf · 06/07/2023 11:54

Is it a hotel transfer or a actual taxi?

If it’s a taxi then it’s not the hotels fault. They can’t control the taxi driver.

mumto2teenagers · 06/07/2023 12:01

Assuming it's not an actual hotel transfer but a taxi the hotel booked on your behalf then YABU refusing to pay for the additional night. It's not the hotels fault your driver didn't turn up.

Nordicrain · 06/07/2023 12:02

What is your alternative? To sleep in the lobby?

Shoxfordian · 06/07/2023 12:04

It’s not their fault, it’s the taxi firm

user1483387154 · 06/07/2023 12:23

Sorry, Im confused, did you cancel the prebooked transfer just to take the taxi they wanted you to?

wapwap · 06/07/2023 22:37

Our travel insurance has advised us not to pay the hotel and to suggest that they claim back from their transfer service provider. As the hotel acted as an agent of the taxi service, they bear responsibility. Thank you 😊

BillyNoM8s · 06/07/2023 22:39

I would've paid for the hotel but let them pay for my new flights.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 06/07/2023 22:40

But had the hotel not offered the (presumably free) service to arrange you a taxi, then you wouldn’t think them liable at all. This is why lots of businesses are starting to stick to the bare minimum of their responsibilities rather than end up in these situations trying to go above and beyond.

wapwap · 07/07/2023 11:19

I mean, in the past I have helped run some holiday cottages, and when a storm passed through which cancelled flights, we let the guests stay an extra night for free as the cottages were going to be empty anyway.

It is their fault. We pre-booked the transfer via the hotel.

Why couldn't you book it yourself directly with a taxi firm?
