Family of 5 going to a caravan Fri to Monday. Doesn't include food or eating out.

Dh thinks we need more

IamSmarticus · 06/07/2023 09:33

Well initially I was going to say it's plenty, then I saw that it is for 5 people and doesn't include any food/eating out! It might be enough but I would say it was cutting it fine and would take extra just in case.

SoWhatEh · 06/07/2023 09:33

That seems like enough unless he is planning on spending every night in the site bar. I'd imagine some days are spent on the beach or walking in the countryside or swimming in free site pools so almost no extra cost excpet food. That leaves cash for stuff like fairground rides, steam trains, local attractions etc. Depends where you are going.

Notcontent · 06/07/2023 09:34

Surely it depends on where you are going and what you are planning to do???

Sissynova · 06/07/2023 09:34

Unless you're planning to only cook from home then I imagine it will cost more for a family of 5.

Really it depends on the sort of holiday you plan to have. Meals out and activities soon add up, whereas making sandwiches and going for a walk is obviously cheaper.

Tohaveandtohold · 06/07/2023 09:35

If food and eating out is already taken care of, what other things does your dh think you’ll be spending more than £500 on. Like if it’s attractions, drinking, etc just look at the prices of these and see if you need more though I think the £500 is enough

UrsulaIsMyQueen · 06/07/2023 09:35

Well it depends what you’re planning to do on the days you’re there. Theme parks/expensive attractions? No, it won’t be enough. Picnics on the beach? Plenty.

TheresBoozeInTheBlender · 06/07/2023 09:35

Even if you spend each night in the bar £60 would cover that so £180, couple hundred on meals out, £30 on arcades, £60 on extortionate bingo 😆, £60 on shopping for the van....

Yeah you need more 🤣

AppleCinnamonBagel · 06/07/2023 09:36

Is food and drink coming from a separate budget? If so, and the £500 is just for spends then it's plenty.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/07/2023 09:37

Is there a need to decide now? Just use a debit card and spend what you want/need to.

nancy2022 · 06/07/2023 09:51

Depends what you're doing?

Often people need to budget, they don’t have the funds to just ‘spend that they want’. We need to keep track of what we spend on holiday so we know we have enough money to eat when we get home. We also have to save up for a few months for our holiday spending money.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/07/2023 09:58

What exactly is the money for? We spend less than that on a weeks camping trip including a few beers in the tent each night (2 adults, 2 children), food and activities. Just camp site fees on top.

OhBling · 06/07/2023 10:00

Is this a 2 night trip or a three night trip? But agree with others - totally depends on what you're planning. Having said that, if that's all the budget that's available, then you'll have to "cut your cloth to fit" as I think the saying used to be. So I'd be avoiding amusement parks or expensive days out and sticking to walks on the beach and the local carousel.

Scottishdreams1991 · 06/07/2023 10:02

Food and eating out is separate

Scottishdreams1991 · 06/07/2023 10:03

500 is for anything really. We probably will stay onside as its haven so all the activities are booked and paid already.

I’m so confused. So your activities are already paid for and food and drink is coming out of some other pot.

What do you think you’ll need this £500 for? 🤔

ActDottie · 06/07/2023 10:10

I think that would be enough for food too! But then we don’t tend to do expensive holiday activities so I think it completely depends on what you do.

Surely if it doesn't include food etc it is plenty? How would it be cutting it fine?

What do you think you need £500 for if everything is paid for and you are not even leaving the site?

Shoxfordian · 06/07/2023 10:17

It depends how much you need for other stuff; if it doesn’t include food and you’re staying on site then I don’t know what you’re spending it on tbh

Ejismyf · 06/07/2023 10:20

Depends where you are going. We went away for two nights last year to a Haven type place and spent 650 in two days, there was so much for the kids to do and buy and was expensive. We went away a couple of months ago for three nights to an independent caravan site and spent about 150, there wasn't amusements and things for the kids to pay to do just ice creams, crisps, slushies and hot dogs and a pool table and it was all a pound each.

Hazelnuttella · 06/07/2023 10:20

I don’t understand what you’d be spending it on if food and activities are covered? Souvenirs?

What did you spend £650 on in 2 days? That's absurd

ButImNotOldEnough · 06/07/2023 10:23

Votes YABU as assumed this would be for activity spending - if the activities are already paid for and the food is coming from a separate budget then yes, £500 should be enough for frivolous spending money for a weekend.

chohiad · 06/07/2023 10:28

Have you priced up activities and meals you want to do? Most menus are online these days. No reason to go into it unsure!
