Went to London last weekend. A concert in Hyde Park. Nobody in food/drink stalls wanted to take cash. Is this a new normal?

Mademtoxic, get the app on your phone then you see what you are spending all the time

Midnightfeasts · 05/07/2023 22:44

Drug dealers only use cash don't they? So if it makes life harder for them, surely that's a good thing

RampantIvy · 05/07/2023 22:44

harder to track and budget with cash (I don't understand people who say the opposite).

Because it is much easier to use your card and lose track of how much you are spending unless you check your banking app after every use, and even then it doesn't always update immediately.

Whereas if you have £100 in cash once it's gone it's gone and you can't spend any more.

I don't understand people who don't understand this.

I don't carry cash BTW.

User106487665 · 05/07/2023 22:45

One of my credit cards doesn't update immediately, it takes a couple of days

Yes, lets shit on the people who struggle with anything other than cash to make life difficult for drug dealers... because only tax dodgers and drug dealers touch cash nowadays. FFS.

Cash is dirty, unhygienic, inconvenient, less secure if you lose it you lose it, harder to track and budget with cash (I don't understand people who say the opposite).

and who is a conspiracy theorist now again?

Cash is dirty that’s a fact not a conspiracy,
it’s less secure fact if you loose it it’s gone forever
much harder to budget that’s opinion some say otherwise .
op you just say you just prefer cash that’s fine but that’s your opinion.
my opinion card or Apple Pay as I use is secure and much more convenient, saves times as I’m not pulling money out or counting it .
my money is paid into a bank so if I needed cash I’d have to remember to get cash back when shopping or find a cash machine which is not convenient.
to answer your question yes it’s normal it’s been normal for a few years move with the times it’s happening.

MortifiedSeptember · 05/07/2023 22:53

I miss cash. My budgeting skills were a lot better with cash. However, most shops/ places are now cashless.

themachinewillstop · 05/07/2023 22:54

Cashless is bad, yes. For many reasons. Privacy being one.

We should fight back against this.

User106487665 · 05/07/2023 22:55

I find Apple Pay a bit of a faff, I can see which card I want to use easier in my purse so I hope cards don't disappear and I'm stuck with my phone

Maddy70 · 05/07/2023 22:57

We will soo. Become a cashless society but it's not a Conspiracy theory to understand that once that happens mo ey will be traced so buskers will have to declare their income, no giving money to homeless, or grams slipping money into their grandchildren hands

While far more convenient it has disadvantages

PuppyMonkey · 05/07/2023 22:58

I don’t even bring a purse out with me anymore, I just have my phone in my pocket and that’s all I need.

User106487665 · 05/07/2023 22:59

All the charities want direct debits now people don't carry cash, they must get less money

Mademetoxic · 05/07/2023 22:59

Sigmama · 05/07/2023 22:44

I do have the app, but it is definitely easier to visualise seeing actual money you have spent than on a screen...

Most buskers I see now have a card reader... and you need a business bank account to have one.

At least it's the death knell for tipping, suppose that's a good thing

Northernsouloldies · 05/07/2023 23:05

Could someone please answer this for me. If cashless was to become the norm, how would you purchase items if said cashless methods failed and they do. Wouldn't that make us vulnerable if cyber attacks were mounted on these payment methods?.

ScoobyDoNot · 05/07/2023 23:08

We went to an air show a few weeks ago. 90% of the stalls there were cash only!
There was one cash point and 60k people..there was a long queue.

I think the main reason was the lack of internet connection but it was so inconvenient!

Can't we have a happy medium of cash or card like the old days!?

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 05/07/2023 23:09

My beef is mainly to do with things like cinemas and museums and attractions being cashless. I run a youth group and many of our 10-11 year olds don't have cards so it's a nightmare on a trip!

Ponoka7 · 05/07/2023 23:10

ThoughtfulCow · 05/07/2023 21:17

Are people conspiracy theorists worried that if we all go cashless then banks will control our wealth (which they already do) so governments can control us more?

Travel on public transport and see how many people get turned away because their cards/bus pass etc isn't working. It's happened to me. I've also paid a few children on because their school bus pass hasn't worked. As said banks have closed accounts of people who are gender critical. Russians were stuck with no access to their savings, even those on holiday in Europe. The DWP have suspended disabled people's benefits based on activities, they have full access to bank accounts. There needs to be an alternative unless all parts of the country has good WIFI, all service providers call centres are based in the UK and open 24/7. Plus transport providers allow some leeway.

Ponoka7 · 05/07/2023 23:11

I'd add in free debit cards from the age of eight.

You have to have lots of different cards, this helps a bit unless they all go down. If you only have one or two it leaves you quite vulnerable

No because the tip is added to the amount.

They show it though and you can have it removed if they do this, I never add one

I see what you're saying but I would imagine most of the populace have one or two payment methods open to them. And if I remember correctly I think Rbs system went to shit a few years ago, people couldn't get paid, take out money by card, pay bills. In the end people had to go in branch leave account details and get cash out and this was all hand written by the tellers. So chaos ensued with just one system out.

A bit of everything is the most sensible, why does it have to be cashless.
