My friend is ruining my Wimbledon experience!!!

So I managed to get tickets for Wimbledon, during the finals weekend and am going with my university friend and it's something we've been planning for a long time - to go Wimbledon.

Now I'm quite simple and I'm happy put on some makeup and a dress, head out and enjoy my day and the experience.

However since the tickets have been booked, my friend has done nothing but hammer my phone day and night about how she will be dressing up on the day from ordering Hermes Sandals to a Dior Bag to even looking for a GOLD sunglasses chain etc...

I really regret asking her now, I just want to go and enjoy my day - I love Wimbledon and it's my happy place (as in the tournament itself) so be actually be in the grounds is just a dream come true but now I feel almost like I need to dress up just as much as her and look good on the day, I don't want to burn my money and on designer sandals and a designer bag (not that I will) but I can't help care now about how ugly I'll look next to her!

AIBU?

Watching it right now, half the spectators look borderline scruffy! I don’t envy sitting in that heat though.

Turnthelightoff · 07/07/2023 22:25

I’ve been to Wimbledon and I’d absolutely say you need to think about comfort footwear wise but it’s a lovely excuse to nail that perfect summer look. Those outfits you see and think that would be a perfect summers day outfit can be just right for a sunny day at Wimbledon and it sounds like some of what she’s thinking. That look doesn’t have to be designer though at all, so don’t feel like it’s any reflection on you and just be happy with the overall level of enthusiasm about the day.

Ofalltheginjoints · 07/07/2023 22:41

I was lucky enough to get tickets for the final Saturday in the ballot. I've never been before so really excited.

Im not over doing it, I'm going smart casual with a skater dress, I've looked for something else but nothing else has worked for me (wheelchair and dresses can be difficult!) as long as your friend is happy on what she is wearing good on her! That's what I'm working off if I feel good in it it'll do

"I've checked the seats, turns out we are not sat next to Wills and Kate after all so you can stand down on the finery"

Bitchy. Women can wear whatever they like - regardless of the occasion.

not really, PEOPLE should dress appropriately for the place and the occasion.

No, women can and we will 🙂

what are you trying to say? Women can wear what they want, but men can't?

There’s no ‘should’ regardless of gender. People can wear whatever the hell they want.

Sennelier1 · 09/07/2023 09:27

You will look fine in your nice summerdress. And you will be able to enjoy the games without checking your bag and shoes stay scratchless. Talk to your friend, literally tell her how unhappy you feel about her view on Wimbledon.

Isthisasgoodasitis · 09/07/2023 09:28

Kate was pictured with William wearing a H&M dress and tennis pumps a few years back he wore chinos and a shirt so I would wear what you want

Normalweirdo · 09/07/2023 09:35

It sounds like your friend is super excited and part of that for her is deciding what to wear. I have a friend like this and she will send me 10 or 20 screenshot of outfits she likes. We are not the same; I tend not to worry about what I'm wearing. I either know way in advance or just throw something on on the day. I love her to bits but at first this filled me with panic worrying that I just wasn't putting enough effort in to my outfit but over the years we've settled into a pattern of her sending me screenshot and me answering "yeah lovely" and her answering back "you really don't care do you haha" but I still get 20 or 30 messages prior to event and that's OK. We know each other well enough now to laugh it off. We both scrub up not to bad regardless of how much effort and still enjoy the day. Let her fuss and don't take it personally. You are just different people.

It's not ladies day at Ascot.
Wear what you feel comfy in..People won't be judging what you wear.. l think she's going OTT.. People be busy watching the tennis.
Have you looked at the spectators.. even the celebs aren't OTT.
l actually think she will look the worse for being OTT..it's not a fashion show.

Gumptionesque · 09/07/2023 20:26

It’s really not a fashion parade. Wear something comfy, and definitely footwear you can spend hours on your feet in. Your friend sounds like she’s getting a bit carried away, but if that’s her thing, let her get on with it. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Covetthee · 09/07/2023 20:33

she is just excited, nothing wrong with that.

i was at wimbledon yesterday and you had all kinds of outfits, very casual looks like jeans and t shirts and then had lots of glam ladies (and men) and everyone looked great.

i see nothing wrong with wanting to look your best, and if she feels that will be her best let her enjoy it. if you can’t go a bit flashy at these events when can you?

on MN everyone would just wear a potato sack etc.

if you’re cenre court then people do dress up a bit more but again thats up to them, its not a rule

But a lot of people DO dress up. Large numbers are in corporate hospitality being wined and dined and watching tennis. Men are in chinos and jackets and ladies have clearly often got new dresses and shoes for the occasion. Yes, lots of people are in shorts and t shirts, which is fine, but lots have also dressed up and are enjoying being smarter.

I really don’t understand why people keep saying people don’t dress up. It’s true that there’s a real mix and anything is fine, but someone in a lovely dress with heels and a designer handbag won’t be out of place. Someone with a major spray tan, clingy dress, hat and lots of cleavage might get noticed and be more unusual, but again, everything is at Wimbledon. Remmeber it’s very international too…people fly in to come and watch it and all kinds of clothing is seen.

Many many women are in a lovely summer dress and comfy footwear…flat sandals or trainers. There are a lot of designer sunglasses around and nice handbags. It’s usually more middle class muted stuff rather than footballers wives bling, but there is a bit of everything there. It’s definitely an event where you can dress up if you want to and it wouldn’t be ridiculous. Clearly people who’ve queued overnight are more likely to be more casual and comfortable and those with ground court tickets, less likely to be full-on dressed up, but there’s room for everything.

Was there all day on Saturday and I am still recovering! Was such a brilliant but tiring day. I would wear a dress, fedora hat and trainers or very comfy sandals if the weather looks good. Enjoy.

PlatBilledDuckypuss · 10/07/2023 09:53

Remember OP money not spent on clothes can be spent on strawberries and cream. HTH.

WildFlowerBees · 10/07/2023 09:57

Is she planning on throwing one of her Hermes sandals on to the court? It's they only way they'll get noticed. Have a lovely time!

Saddlesore · 16/07/2023 19:23

How was your Wimbledon experience, OP? I was there on Friday (in the rain). When I saw a pair of women, one carrying a Dior bag, I thought of you!

LadyGarcia · 17/07/2023 21:17

Hello all!!!

Firstly big THANK YOU to everyone that has replied and encouraged me to just go, enjoy the day and not worry about what I was wearing because that's exactly what I did. My friend however was head to toe in designer, Dior Handbags, Hermes Sandals, VCA Necklace, Celine Sunglasses but I now see what most of you told me earlier that nobody cares what others are wearing because even with what she had on, it did not make her look any better than me or anyone else there - if that makes sense?

(I guess I stressed about it as much as I did because I don't live that same lifestyle and so I'd stick out like a sore thumb next to her).

The day was amazing and I really was lucky to be there, I even saw the Princess of Wales walk across the bridge into the Royal Box so that was nice! The entire day was honestly the best and I hope to do it again next year.

HOWEVER going with my friend (this one in particular) wasn't the best of ideas so I think I won't be going with her again and I'd rather go alone. When we got there, we waiting outside for half an hour to be let in and if anyone has done this before you'll know they announce on the speakers when it's time to open - the moment they did this my friend handed me her phone and said "record me from the back walking in" which I said to no, telling her this is my first experience and I wanted to absorb it not record her but that was just the start... the entire day I kid you all not she kept asking me to take pictures which was fine every now and again but it was constant depending on where on the grounds we were, then she'd look at the pictures and tell me they were not good enough and take it again - eventually I had to tell her that I wasn't her personal photographer/videographer and she needed to ask other people because I was done! Even when we were watching games, she wants me to record her watching it... I'm sure all get the point of my day now.

Overall, Wimbledon was amazing so once again thank you for giving me the push to enjoy it, I really did!!!
