Do you shave for you or for men/women?

Hoping this doesn't offend anybody. I'm talking about all over, legs, armpits etc.
I shave my legs and armpits every day as I like the smooth feeling and I get stubble after even one day. I even have to pluck my chin hairs most days and have regular dermaplaning as I seem to have a very hairy face.
However I realise that I'm conditioned to think bodily hair on women is 'gross'. It's expected that women have smooth, hair-free bodies, of course you see the odd woman with full armpit/leg hair in retaliation, but generally not. I remember forgetting to shave once, going out in a dress and feeling so ashamed and 'dirty'.
Men don't have these pressures.

Bit of a difference between theae and armpit...

Are men's armpits magically immune from being unhygienic then?

Some maybe, some certainly not.... I wish the latter would realise that...

I don't know why it's so hard for some people to understand that for some people it's easier and more hygienic to shave because they sweat more and have differently behaving bacteria and genetical factors (as well as diets, hormones, medical conditions).

Some people would be absolutely fine with majestic armpit hair, some wouldn't based on the above. I start smelling more and faster if I grow armpit hair.

Fiy, back to eyebrows etc. Body bactetia differs in different areas so armpit has different bacteria to eyebrows, bears, chest have different etc. Hence why some parts smell more/less than others.

Kind of like everyone has different gut bacteria. Or we would all fart the same. 😁

Maddy70 · 06/07/2023 18:18

Definitely for me. I get more sweaty with hair.

JudgeAnderson · 06/07/2023 18:21

My pits definitely don't differ on odour or lack thereof on the basis of how hairy they are. As I said, if you're different, crack on. If you just like them bald, crack on too. But don't imply that anyone is less clean or not hygienic because they haven't removed body hair.

JudgeAnderson · 06/07/2023 18:23

Actually the hairy bit of me that gets really hot and sweaty when I exercise is my head. But I'm sure as hell not removing my waist-length hair because of it, and no-one has ever accused anyone of being smelly or unhygienic because they're not sporting a buzzcut.

CatsSnore · 06/07/2023 18:30

Why is it either or?

Sometimes I shave, sometimes I don't

I usually shave once a week to keep on top of it, I don't give AF about stubble. I shave mostly because I go swimming regularly and it's one of those get naked and dressed changing rooms.

I hear you on the hairy face. I don't derma plan as it seems like it grows back more beard like for some people. I do get a fortnightly thread along with eyebrows. My facial hair is definitely for me and not for others.

Cakesandbabes · 06/07/2023 18:31

That would probably be because typical armpit bacteria don't particularly thrive well on head.

Katieandthekids · 07/07/2023 19:31

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 06/07/2023 12:47

Those two statements are contradictory. If it's only about what you like, then you'd keep doing it even if no one saw.

Yeh you are right. Then I do it for other people. Same as why I wear makeup etc.

Katieandthekids · 07/07/2023 19:32

But then actually... I think looking nice is a form of self respect for me and I just don't like the look of hairy armpits.

I am very fair so only shave my legs about once a month in the summer and never in winter

Armpits because it physically annoys me if I dont, nothing else ever

If my husband was bothered he wouldn't be with me

TempestTost · 20/02/2024 01:43

I suppose I do it for both to some extent.

I generally find it more aesthetically appealing, which of course is a cultural norm, but I don't have a problem with cultural norms, I can take them for what they are. I also find the texture better, particularly on my legs. On the odd occasion I've given up shaving for a bit I get to a point I find it very irritating if I wear pants.

On the other hand, if I am single I will sometimes not bother in the winter, but when I'm not single I generally won't, unless there is some overwhelming thing like I am ill. I am not against doing things to keep a partner happy if they are generally things I don't mind doing anyway, IYSWIM.

Josette77 · 20/02/2024 01:57

It's interesting. One of the things I get the most compliments on is my hair. I have a huge mop of hair on my head. Thin hair but tons of it.

No one has ever suggested it gets extra dirty or smells more.

Yes, other body hair is scene as unhygienic.

I shave my armpits out of habit. Legs when I'm wearing a dress, rarely in winter. Vulva when I feel like it. Sometimes I shave it all, sometimes it goes untouched for weeks. Usually in the summer because I get itchy from the heat where I live.

I feel sexy no matter how much hair I have though. I don't love being bald down there esthetically. I prefer it with hair.

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 20/02/2024 01:57

Interesting question, I don't personally care about the state of my legs and underarms and neither does DP. I frequently go awhile between shaving.

But I still shave them if they're going to be on display in public. So if I'm being honest with myself, it's probably to avoid judgement from other women.

I'm a dedicated pube-remover though, and that's entirely for myself.

I don't think this is so weird. Some people sweat a lot in the groin area. And some people have much smellier sweat than others. Same with armpits, that is why you will see armpit sweat stains on shirts.

Personally, I never shaved the pubic area when I was younger, but now that i'm middle aged and have very heavy periods, which a tampon won't contain, I tend to remove it all shortly before I get my period. Because I will tell you, a bloody sodden mass of pubic hair feels pretty unhygienic and gross through the day and it's quite difficult to remedy in a workplace toilet stall. Bare isn't great, but a little easier.

Now, if someone took samples and did a study, is it actually less hygienic? Probably not, but it sure feels like it is, and that's the point.

Deebee90 · 20/02/2024 02:20

I do my armpits and legs every couple days only because I wear a uniform and these would be on show otherwise . My pubic area I tend to leave for a while as I’m single so it gets a trim normally before my period as I can’t hear the thought of blood in the hair. It’s frankly disgusting. Oh and I get my brows done once a month .

Porfirio · 20/02/2024 02:33

I've removed all of my body hair since I was a teenager in the late 1970s. I do it for me as it feels much more comfortable.

Diamondcurtains · 20/02/2024 03:57

I shave my legs and underarms for me because yes I think it looks absolutely disgusting . I shave my bikini line and trim downstairs.

INeedToClingToSomething · 20/02/2024 14:30

I do it mainly for me. I have PCOS and a LOT of dark body hair. I don't like the way it looks and no one needs to see pubic hair half way down my legs. I also find hair itchy especially under the arms. That's one of the reasons I started shaving my pits in the first place because I found it itchy. DH doesn't care so it's not for him.

A friend of mine stopped removing body hair for a while. But she had very fair, very fine body hair and it looked fine/lovely. If my hair was like that I'd probably not bother removing it as it's a complete faff and I'm not one for body/face/hair preening. But my body hair is a whole different ball game.

Oblomov24 · 20/02/2024 21:26

I only shave occasionally, putting it off for as long as I can. Who do I do it for? Nit myself. To conform maybe?

CornedBeef451 · 20/02/2024 21:28

I just shaved my legs for the first time since the summer so I could apply massive fake tattoos.

They are ridiculous but make me happy but don't stick to long hairs.

EveSix · 20/02/2024 21:33

I don't shave anything for 9 months of the year. Between September and December I shave a tonsure the size of a small saucer atop my head. My remaining body hair goes untouched all year around.

Zanatdy · 20/02/2024 21:35

Legs / under arm - I do it for convention

Bikini (well much wider) I only do if dating.

PaperDoIIs · 20/02/2024 21:42

I do it for others. I wish I was confident enough not to, but hey ho.

ValeriaAquino8 · 25/03/2024 18:20

I don't shave my legs very often since I wear long pants and I don't see it as necessary. As for my armpits, I shave them every 3 days. It's personal preference. I feel better when I don't have hair in my armpits and I can wear sleeveless blouses.
