To not wait any longer?

Got an email yesterday asking me to come in for a job interview at 10am today.

Arrived on time. Been sat in the waiting room for 30 mins. One glass of water. Told things are running over but no apology.

Weird feeling just want to walk out. AIBU?

Depends how much you want the job

AtTheZoo · 04/07/2023 10:31

Not very much any more. But is that unfair? I like my current job. Not desperate

At least they have courteously let you know rather than keeping you hanging. I think it would depend. I'd hang around a bit longer, maybe 15 minutes before I ask for a time frame from whoever is EA around there, and see how I feel about the interview. Maybe they will be apologetic? You don't know what has happened that morning to cause this. It depends how much you want or need this job.

galmom · 04/07/2023 10:36

I don't think I'd just walk, I'd make it known that I had already been waiting 30 mins and couldn't wait much longer. I'd maybe stay another few minutes after, it doesn't exactly look good on them though so it would probably put me off the job

Pinkdelight3 · 04/07/2023 10:39

Seems a bit kneejerk. Things do run over. They could well apologise when you go in for the interview. If you don't want the job, might as well walk out now, but I wouldn't flounce on this basis. Half an hour with a glass of water and an explanation is no major hardship.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 04/07/2023 10:41

I would do the interview but later in factor in if they seem like a chaotic / disrespectful organisation.

But I’d certainly factor in the impression I got from the interview as well.

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 04/07/2023 10:42

Well it's not very respectful of your time, is it? I'd find someone and ask what's going on but if they wanted me to keep waiting i'd really consider leaving.

There are some companies now who deliberately make people wait to see what they'll do (they want people who will wait for ages!)

Codlingmoths · 04/07/2023 10:44

things do run over, I’d wait longer than a half hour. But I’d expect apologies when they came out.

AtTheZoo · 04/07/2023 10:45

I've had to lie to my current team to explain my absence this morning. I have a meeting at lunchtime. Just feels shit to be sat here for 45 mins now. There is no way to walk without it seeming like a flounce. Its no great hardship for sure but still pretty rubbish?

OP posts:
Kingsparkle · 04/07/2023 10:45

I think the wait is just making you realise you don’t really want the job. I would still do the interview though as good practise.

Jogonmagpies · 04/07/2023 10:46

Do you want to work somewhere that is this badly organised? The interview is for them to impress you as much as you're there to impress them. I ignored red flags at a job interview and regretted it. Ask them how long it will be then decide what you want to do. Hopefully you're in by now. Or gone!

Kingsparkle · 04/07/2023 10:46

45 mins I would probably leave actually. I don’t know why that 15 mins changes my mind but it does.

AmandaHoldensLips · 04/07/2023 10:47

What kind of job is it?

I'd do the interview then when asked if I have any questions it would be "why do you think your time is more important than mine?"

Why would you do that if you don't really want the new job very much?

Waiting over half an hour wouldn't bother me (I regularly wait for busses longer than that), but if I didn't really want the job I'd sack it off and leave.

You're still waiting? No update at all?

Nah speak to reception and tell them you have other commitments. Then leave.

WonderfulUsername · 04/07/2023 10:48

And don't worry about 'flouncing' or wondering 'if it's fair'.

They really won't care, it's just one less person for them to interview.

If they're running late you'll be doing them a favour.

AtTheZoo · 04/07/2023 10:48

I want the job as its more responsibility and more money. But the interview was a chance for me to find out more and meet them to see if worth the jump. I want the job on paper but interveiws helpful for finding out more no?

OP posts:
AtTheZoo · 04/07/2023 10:49

Right. 11am I'm going. Surely? Am I being precious?

Speak to whoever organises that interviews and say that unfortunately you have other commitments but are still interested and would like to reschedule the interview.

bibbityboppityboo · 04/07/2023 10:50

I'd explain that you have to go back to your job as you have meetings etc - 45 minutes is ridiculous.

MimiArm · 04/07/2023 10:50

I'd leave and tell the receptionist you have a work commitment and can't wait any longer. Rearrange for another time if you do want the job.

I wouldn't wait an hour. Not precious, mug (lighthearted 😁).

Just say you have to be somewhere unfortunately and that's it.

MinkyWinky · 04/07/2023 10:53

Don't leave without explaining. Just be factual and explain that you need to get back to your job and unfortunately can't wait any longer. You would end up wanting to rush through the interview as you need to get back and wouldn't be able to focus.

Absolutely not. A hour wait is ridiculous.

If you had turned up an hour late they wouldn't be impressed and may even have refused to interview you. It's a big red flag and I wouldn't want to work somewhere that thought my time was worth so little.
