To think that Mn is wrongly described as a stronghold

Keep seeing mumsnet being described (usually by men) as Prosecco Stormfront, the worst hotbed of sexism and transphobia, full of white, middle aged, middle class right wing women - is this true! 😮

On the contrary @Bromptotoo I think people on MN are generally very well informed on trans issues, and mostly able to summarise quite clearly what the problems are.

It's less agressive than twitter but I do think AIBU can be awful sometimes and lacking in empathy.

What is a Prosecco stormfront? Can I join it?

It’s a reference to Stormfront, which is a neo-Nazi/white supremacist web forum. It’s named after Die Sturmer, which one of the leading Nazi newspapers under the third reich.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:18

But did they have Prosecco?

Bromptotoo · 30/06/2023 22:18

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:12

I tick most of those boxes and @Bromptotoo where are you?

UK, English Midlands.

I'm in equal parts fascinated and horrified by the extent to which GC feminism/TERF attitudes about Transwomen prevail here.

Is it something that's lurking unseen amongst UK peeps and apparently totally absent amongst my own circle of friends. Or is it part of the two nations/common language divide with those left pond side?

OK thanks. Probably won’t join it then!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:19

What are you talking about. What has pondside got to do with anything?

Or perhaps your friends don't want to talk about being GC because they will be ostracised or even sacked, like Maya Forstater was.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:21

I’m North West England and don’t know anyone who isn’t GC.

SigourneyHoward · 30/06/2023 22:21

@Bromptotoo what is it about women asserting their belief that sex matters - there are times that it doesn't but there are absolutely times when it does and the diminution of sex can cause significant harm - that upsets you?

Nicecow · 30/06/2023 22:22

I think that's quite accurate tbh! Except left wing - very pro people getting benefits and people doing the bare minimum and not putting themselves out for their employers

Lentilweaver · 30/06/2023 22:22

I am GC for instance, but I never talk about it with friends or in the workplace because as a non-white person, people in my circles equate being GC with being racist.

RoseslnTheHospital · 30/06/2023 22:23

@Bromptotoo have you not noticed that women that speak about women's rights and the obvious conflicts with trans activism get abused, sacked, doxxed, harassed, arrested, physically attacked... etc etc. even simply socially ostracised by their supposed friends. I can imagine why no one has spoken an alternative view to you if you're immediately referring to T*RFs and so on.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:24

GC=Racist? Say what?

GC=Racist? Say what?

I don't think so. But many people do. I have heard analogies like "Well, not so long ago black and brown people weren't let into many spaces either, so we should let transwomen into women's toilets. Be kind!"

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/06/2023 22:26

IME women talk in hushed tones, don't say anything if they haven't checked out each others bona fides and then launch into how concerned they are. If you're a TWAW-no-debate-be-kind person, no one is sharing anything with you.

And MN is a UK site. I mean one of the phrases is 'women won't wheest' FFS, clearly UK.

kelsaycobbles · 30/06/2023 22:28

I think the difficulty is

Gc think gender shouldn't matter
But they think sex does ( rational )

So when they say a TW isn't a mother it isn't a comment on their clothes , it's a comment on the fact that the TW appears to be conflating gender with sex

It's obviously a subtle distinction

donquixotedelamancha · 30/06/2023 22:29

The irony of The YouTuber Owen Jones criticising others for being mean on the internet is enormous.

It's like Boris Johnson calling someone a fibber.

SpudleyLass · 30/06/2023 22:30

Bromptotoo · 30/06/2023 22:01

What's shocked me is the prevalence of Gender Critical Feminists/TERFs with the accompanying lack of understanding ot trans issues.

Are these people in the UK or is it an American thing?

Whats shocked me is the prevalence of Gender Ideologues/TRAS with the accompanying lack of understanding of women's rights issues....

Yes, women-especially mums- are the last minority it is ok to be condescending about.

I can be 100% certain that what you say is bollocs bears no relation to my interactions with UK friends.

Firestarter and other 'martyrs' chose their course.

I'm still waiting for anyone to state whether they're in the UK or not.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/06/2023 22:33

I’ve already told you

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/06/2023 22:33

Wow.

user6482957 · 30/06/2023 21:39

MN is rather left wing.

It really isn't tbf. There are certain things here i don't agree with personally, but on the whole it's a good, decent space to chat or ask or discuss. Totally wouldn't say it's 'left' at all though.

Centrepiece · 30/06/2023 22:34

The left will say mn is rightwing; the right will say mn is leftwing. It depends on where you're viewing from. Mn is both, I think. It can be a nasty place and can also be an entertaining place.

I'm in the UK, East Midlands, as it happens.

Most of my female acquaintances refuse to speak out because of the ostracisation. But they do DM me because they know I'm very outspokenly GC.

Oh and there is nothing horrifying about women righlty pointing out the conflict of interests.
