WWYD with neighbours mail?

Lololow · 28/06/2023 13:03

Have lived at my property about 2 years, there is a lot of land behind my house where my neighbours have built their house and then got their address. So say i am 20 they are 20A, but they also have a house name so technically the address is 'Holly house, 20A such and such road'
I've always received post meant for them, always addressed to my address no.20. I assumed this is a common mistake with similar addresses and at first i would either take round to them (not just a nip next door thing as their property is set right back from mine and they have dogs roaming the property which makes me uneasy) or if i see them walking past i would tell them the post had come to my address again.

But now i'm getting bored of it, the post never has their address on it (especially the house name which would ensure it went to the right place!) I've told them we keep getting their post, I've sent some bits back saying not at this address usually when I've had an influx of post which has driven me mad.
Funnily enough i never get any parcels, but i get plenty of hospital/medical looking letters which must be important so why not just change the address!!
AIBU to be annoyed?!

I would wait till you’ve a bundle and either hand it to the postman saying they’re delivering incorrectly or go to the delivery office with it and say it’s a completely different property and to stop delivering another property’s mail to you

greengreensummer · 28/06/2023 13:08

I would try to catch the postie, let them know they've been delivering post to the wrong address then point them in the direction of 20A.

wutheringkites · 28/06/2023 13:09

It's possible that their new address hadn't been registered fully and is not accepted by any website that pre-validates them.

Dreamer8 · 28/06/2023 13:10

Hand it all back to the postie and let them sort it.

AutumnCrow · 28/06/2023 13:10

I can only say what I would do.

I would ask them to erect a post with a post box (US style) on your boundary, nearest your gaff, so you can stick their post in it, without having to go onto their property and disturb their dogs / put yourself out.

Or, if they won't do that, write the actual full address on the letters and put them back in a post box. Maybe make a sheet of labels if you can be arsed.

And/or put a sign up on your door, 'Any post for Mr Fauntleroy or Ms Farquar should go to Holly House at 20A, not here. Thank you.' In fact I'd probably catch the postie and bribe them with a tub of Haribo as well.

Dreamer8 · 28/06/2023 13:10

Put a little note on your door saying "This is NOT no. 20A"

GimmeSleep · 28/06/2023 13:11

Not known at this address / Return to sender

Pop back in the postbox next time you go past one.

AriannasGuitarCase · 28/06/2023 13:14

Just ring Royal Mail and they'll flag it on their system and make sure the posties are aware. Mention that it includes medical letters that are likely to contain private information

ButterCrackers · 28/06/2023 13:16

Put a sign on your door or postbox saying only for your name and house number. Not the neighbours name and number.
Get the neighbours phone number and message them that they can collect their post from you as a set time each week. You’ll put it outside if you’re not at home.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/06/2023 13:16

If you can catch the postie then do so and let them know. Our local postie will let the homeowners know they have been giving out an incorrect address. If the homeowners are nice about it - the postie will redirect the post themselves for a short while, until systems get updated, if they are rude, the postie will just return it to the depot for return address unknown! People around here respect the postie and tip well at Xmas!!

fingers crossed your postie is as good as ours.

Createausername1970 · 28/06/2023 13:48

I think the issue is the letters are coming addressed to 20 not 20A. So the fault lies with the sender, but the receiver (your neighbour) should be contacting everyone who misses of the the A to make sure its put on.

I would write, "Not known at this address - try Holly House, 20A " and pop it all back into the post box when you pass one. You have tried to get them to sort it out, and they haven't. So I wouldn't be making any extra efforts.

Lololow · 28/06/2023 14:03

@wutheringkites their house has been there years and I've seen their address in the list when I've been ordering takeaways etc. I mean it's possible they selected my address when they first moved in if they weren't able to select their own but it has been years now and many of the letters I get are hospital/medical related so you would think they would have changed the address at the doctors after all this time.

catzrulz · 28/06/2023 14:10

Honestly I'd just put not known at this address and stick it back in the nearest post box, you've enabled them for long enough to be lazy!
I'm assuming here that the postie has to deliver as per address rather than by name? Surely they must notice it is not your surname, and is your neighbours.

Krickley · 28/06/2023 14:24

Id be worried the address isn’t registered properly and if they get into debt/baliffs etc

CableTidy · 28/06/2023 14:30

I think the postie has to give you mail addressed to your house, if the number is wrong on the letter then they're not supposed to post elsewhere. I'd return as not known at this address. They've had plenty of time to correct it

Bigsislookingforadvice · 28/06/2023 14:35

You / they can register the address for post with royal mail, then it'll update on those auto systems you use when typing in a postcode for an address. Takes bit of time for addresses update on databases but it's the long-term solution. In the mean time bundle up and return not at this address.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/06/2023 14:37

@CableTidy you are correct! But sometimes people are helpful as is our postie. I just hope that some idiot jobsworth never reports him for going the extra mile and truly giving great customer service.

GoldDuster · 28/06/2023 14:41

Weird, surely they've realised they're not getting post? But if they haven't worked it out yet and they continue putting your address instead of theirs there's not much you can do to help them is there?
Wait until you've got a few, cross out number 20 and write
Not at this address
Holly House 20A
and stick them back in the postbox. We have a different postie every day so talking to one isn't helpful, I never see the same one twice.

Would you? You must have so much free time. Buying and erecting an expensive postbox, buying sweets for a postman, typing/printing or writing out stickers? All to accommodate a neighbour 😄

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 28/06/2023 14:43

At this point, I'd bin it.

ItsNotWhatItsNot · 28/06/2023 14:44

I’d return-to-sender at my own convenience, which would be every few months. If OP delivers it to them they have no incentive to remember to update their details.

MonumentalLentil · 28/06/2023 14:51

When we moved in we had the post for the previous occupants who had moved a few houses down the road. Seller had told us they used to pop it through their letterbox.

After a while I was a bit fed up as they still hadn't updated their details, and a large box arrived which I inadvertantly turned upside down before realising there was a sticker saying to keep it the right way up. It was the crashing sound that made me realise...And no, I didn't do it on purpose. I did walk down and put it outside their house.

Following that incident the post still kept coming. Resolved in the end by putting a note in with the next batch saying that we would not be delivering their post any longer so suggested they made arrangements.

It stopped.

Some people just expect to be waited on because they are so important.

Lololow · 28/06/2023 15:21

Funnily enough maybe a couple of months ago I was just going out as the postman came and he held up a couple of letters and asked if they were for me and I said no they're next doors. So I think they are aware but I suppose are obligated to post them to the address they are addressed to.
@GoldDuster they must get some as I've seen the postman go to the house. There are several adults living there and I get mail for 3 of them, maybe the others have the address correct 🤣

I have made the rookie error of liking my neighbours! Not the MN mindset, is it?

Put a little note on your door saying "This is NOT no. 20A"

Op says they are addressed to no. 20.

I’m assuming it’s from places that can’t pick 20A from a list of properties when filling in their address, I’d either be insisting they set up a P.O. Box or something so they can collect their mail or return it all.
