What would you spend £800 on?

I know it’s not a huge amount of money. But we had a small pay out and after paying off debts it’s what we’re left with. We don’t usually have this amount of disposable money so should we…

A - do some house renovations

B - take the kids on a modest unplanned holiday

C - keep it incase if emergencies (we have approx £600 in savings, currently.)

WWYD?!

@FelixDoublyDelicious oh felix this made me feel really awful. Is there not government funding for this?

Aah, its a bit more complicated than that, but thank you for being so nice

He relies on me and we have a manual wheelie (which is hard work for both of us) I can never hear what he is saying and I am always saying what? Eh? Its quite funny really.

We will save for it, but if I had that right here, right now, its what I would do

EggInANest · 27/06/2023 20:55

Savings.

You need a bigger emergency fund.

And deal with your plastering from the money you formerly paid in debt repayments.

You don’t pay tax on the first £5k interest…there’s no way OP will hit that with it all in savings

I thought it was £1k?

purplecorkheart · 27/06/2023 21:01

I admit I am a very risk adverse person so this is entirely influenced my choice. I would save the bulk of it. Given the costs of everything now I would rather keep it and use it to fix something in house/car breakdown/fridge needs to be replaced again rather than getting into debt. I know you have savings but again given the cost of everything it would be worth adding more to the pot. Maybe use a £100 for a nice day out etc. Again as I said I am very risk adverse and avoid debt if possible.

DDivaStar · 27/06/2023 21:03

I would have a holiday, but we do have more savings than you. If I was you I'd have a 1 or 2 night away and keep a few hundred in savings too....

3AndStopping · 27/06/2023 21:10

@FelixDoublyDelicious 🤣🤣 so funny. Bless you both. Keep smiling! I hope you have an unexpected little win fall! 🤞🏼

Save as much as possible and then find a cheap weekend away in the summer with Hoseasons or haven.

And all debt repayment money now diverted to savings.

FarTooHotForMe · 27/06/2023 21:17

Save £400, £200 on something for the house £200 on a couple of summer days out or toys for the DC.

BananaOrangeApple · 27/06/2023 21:23

I should have said up to….some people can get £5k…google interest on savings and it’ll take you to the correct place on the gov website.

CafeNervosa · 27/06/2023 21:25

I’d save £400, and then use the other £400 to buy a great tent and camping equipment so you can have cheaper but comfortable camping holidays. Once you have comfy gear, you have numerous cheap fun holidays with the family.

Bollocks.

Wrong thread 😂

CeriB82 · 27/06/2023 21:33

Im a saver so id bank it

Leeds2 · 27/06/2023 21:34

Personally, I would put it all towards savings.

If I was unable to do that, I would put half towards savings and half towards replastering one of the rooms in your new home so that you can get it finished. In the long run, I think DC will appreciate more a nicely fitted out bedroom, or a decent kitchen, than a weekend away.

3AndStopping · 27/06/2023 21:35

@BSTAMEX 🤣🤣🤣

bonzaitree · 27/06/2023 21:37

Id save it to have more of a buffer but then I worry a lot about finances.

SoWhatEh · 27/06/2023 21:39

I'd spend it on a holiday if you don't already have one booked. You can get really pretty cottages in the Lakes from just over £500 and have £250 left over for treats.

TiaraBoo · 27/06/2023 21:41

I’m all for a holiday but not when you only have £600 in savings.
Bit if I had an extra £800, I’d be putting it towards buying DD a car/car insurance.

3AndStopping · 27/06/2023 21:35

@BSTAMEX 🤣🤣🤣

😂😂 in answer to your question OP it'll have to be a city break for a few days. Barca or along those lines!

mondaytosunday · 27/06/2023 21:44

Save it.

strawberrywhisk · 27/06/2023 21:46

I'd put it aside for a rainy day, it won't burn holes in your pockets

Trollfeet · 27/06/2023 21:49

I would buy a Delonghi bean to cup coffee machine, DH would put it in savings.

MasterBeth · 27/06/2023 21:52

AnSionnachGlic · 27/06/2023 19:08

Do you have/want Netflix, Disney+ or other subscription channel? You could pay it in full and then you and whole family could enjoy it for the year.

They have £800! How many Netflix subscriptions does that buy you?

coodawoodashooda · 27/06/2023 21:54

sittingonacornflake · 27/06/2023 18:58

With just £600 in savings I think you'd be mad not to put it all into savings (sorry)
