To be annoyed by the American English on MN

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 09:34

You know, I was so pissed at him
Mom instead of mum
Mad instead of angry
Sure there are more but I find it really annoying!
AIBU?

"gotten" is British English - just from a long time ago. It was taken out to America by the Pilgrims and remained unchanged, but the British dropped it from common use. Now it sounds foreign to us - lots of words are like this.

I'll only mind if people start talking abot Spackle when they mean Polyfilla. Saran wrap, anyone?

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 19:57

I was only angry at being called stupid and ill- informed.
It doesn't actually bother me that the majority of MN'rs disagree. That is the nature of AIBU and I am man enough to take it!!!

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 23/02/2008 19:57

Thing is, MrsR, if you are going to complain about something, it's best you know what you're talking about, or you risk looking like an aubergine.

Or perhaps an eggplant.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:02

I don't think there is anything wrong with learning something new. I don't mind being corrected if I am in the wrong.
I don't even mind admitting I didn't know about the use of mom in the west midlands- what's wrong with that?
I do have a problem with being called stupid tho' and I had a response to make to that.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 23/02/2008 20:03

ill-founded, mrs r, as in 'mom is an americanism'. which as has been amply demonstrated, it isn't exclusively. it rather hacks away at your stupid OP, doesn't it?
especially given the fact that you don't know where people come from on the world-wide web. never mind, though, so long as you think you're better than everyone else, eh?

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:07

It was something I wasn't aware of - that doesn't make me stupid. Are you an expert on all regional accents and collaqualisms in GB then?
Good for you if you are, but most people aren't.
This is a thread on a website, not an exam question.
LOL That I think I am better than everyone else.
I've already explained this anyway

AitchTwoOh · 23/02/2008 20:10

i didn't call you stupid, i called your OP stupid. i think it is stupid, and also snobbish, as it happens. you seem to be taking tremendous offence at being caught out... i thought you didn't give a shit, as per your previous pouty post.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:15

Being caught out? Eh? The only poster that has annoyed me has been you with your self-righteous arrogance and accusations.

I took it in good humour I thought.
Snobbish?? pmsl That's the a last thing I am, believe me

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 23/02/2008 20:21

ohfgs, take a hold of yourself. you posted a snotty OP, it was ill-founded in that it was based on an innaccurate observation and i really haven't noticed you being good-natured about it at all. what this is, yet again, is someone posting an AIBU and bridling when they're told that they are BU...

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:21

And breathe.....
Sorry Aitch, I didn't mean to resort to name calling. That is petty and unfair.
I really don't mind that I was wrong, I found it interesting.
I am not geting into an argument over this, it's not worth it.

OP posts:
Mum1369 · 23/02/2008 20:21

Gosh mrsr - who did you murder ?

CoteDAzur · 23/02/2008 20:23

I do use American and English spellings/terms interchangeably. Sorry if that is an eyesore to some.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:23

Aitch- I didn't bridle until you came along.
What is your point???
I don't know, mrs1369, people just seem to enjoy taking offence on MN

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 23/02/2008 20:25

actually... this is what prompted me to get more involved in this threat. i think you were very rude to skidoodle.

By mrsruffallo on Sat 23-Feb-08 19:31:43
skidoodle- you are the one that sounds unworldly. Don't get out much do you?
Text speak adaptable and pragmatic????
Do me a favour

By AitchTwoOh on Sat 23-Feb-08 19:34:30
hey hey, why the nippy attitude to skidoodle? she's only responding to this stupid and utterly ill-founded OP (oh and it was light-hearted as well, let's not forget hmm).

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:27

And I thought that skidoodle was very rude to me.
I am sure she is very grateful for your defending her, and now you have made your point
Thank you

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 23/02/2008 20:30

you are most welcome.

skidoodle · 23/02/2008 20:43

I am grateful to Aitch for defending me (although where I come from we say haitch

but you're right mrsruffalo, I was kind of rude to you too. I guess I just found the superior tone in your OP annoying when you seemed to be quite ill-informed and prejudiced on the subject matter.

One of my pet peeves (Americanism alert) is the whole Trussic "oh I'm a terrible pedant me, I just can't help myself picking on people who aren't good at spelling or grammar because I've such high standards", which is mostly just looking down on people for being less educated, less clever, or of a different class, region or country from you.

As for not getting out much (admittedly at 8 months preggers this is true of recent times) I've lived in 3 nations of the UK, Ireland, Australia and the US. And I've made sure to pick up the best idioms and phrases from each place

Aitch I don't understand text speak either and I always make sure to include all my punctuation in text messages but I am old and grey and full of sleep. I only hate it because I think it's cool but it's totally beyond me.

Mumcentreplus · 23/02/2008 20:43

lol..(ducks from snipers)

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:49

Thanks skidoodle. If I came across snooty it was certainly unintentional.
Good working class stock me, and well-travelled too.
My grammar and spelling are in no way good enough for me to even pretend to be a pedant!!
Good working class stock me, and well-travelled too.
Let's have a manly handshake

OP posts:
mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 20:51

I wanted to make the point that I was good working class stock and well-travelled, too
Did you get that bit?

OP posts:
skidoodle · 23/02/2008 20:53

proffers rough and hairy hand to mrsruffallo

peanutbear · 23/02/2008 20:55
