You know, I was so pissed at him
Mom instead of mum
Mad instead of angry
Sure there are more but I find it really annoying!
AIBU?

Sorry, I didn't realize this was an UK only site and thus will sign off to please you. How zenophobic can you be!

berolina · 23/02/2008 10:26

It is a bit bonkers, isn't it dh is a dreadful Luddite in some ways. He will also say Mobiltelefon or just English 'mobile'. Don't think I've ever heard Natel.

I'm a bit about the AE thing when the boys go to school (which will presumably be a bilingual, if not an international) one. Atm ds1 is in all-German kindergarten.

cariboo · 23/02/2008 10:26

Why do say you "hate"?

cariboo · 23/02/2008 10:27

Sorry, "detest"

berolina · 23/02/2008 10:28

oh morningglory, don't take it to heart We have plenty of American posters and all sorts of linguistic variations on here. We even have several foreign-language threads

carmenelectra · 23/02/2008 10:29

We say and write mom too. Its normal where we live!

ernest · 23/02/2008 10:31

morningglory/cariboo, it's nothing to do with discrimination or xenophobia. No on is saying they hate/detest americans, they're saying they dislike it when non-americans speak 'american'. What on earth is wrong with that. it's similar to people saying they find it annoying/poncy when brits say 'ciao' or something.

cupsoftea · 23/02/2008 10:32

sorry - can't understand these people - what's the problem with them using words from another language?

Mumcentreplus · 23/02/2008 10:33

LMAO@thread

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 10:34

morningglory- I have stated earlier that it was a comment on the usage of this in people taught English English, not that it should be banned or anything.
Bit oversensitive aren't you?

I am not xenophobic thanks very much

Emprexia · 23/02/2008 10:35

there's nothing wrong with it cupsoftea, lol, but it still doesn't stop people from being irritated by it.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 10:39

This is just a lightheated thread about things that irritate people.
MN is full of them
Get off you high horses

can anyone explain to me why Americans say "can you bringmy friend to the airport please?" instead of "can you take my friend to the airport please?" if the person asking the question is not already at the airport? does that make sense? I've noticed in some books by Irish authors they say this too.

ernest · 23/02/2008 11:13

an expression that really annoys me atm is 'reaching out'. dh has many US colleagues who say eg "I'll reach out to you next week. or I tried reaching out to you today, but you weren't there." What's wrong with just saying 'call' or 'phone' ffs. Reaching out indeed.

moodymammy · 23/02/2008 11:19

and could care less instead of couldn't care less.surely if you could care less that means you do care? or am i just being thick

ernest · 23/02/2008 11:23

exactly, it's couldn't care less.

One other annoying thing is cuuent trend for 'I'm loving.....' Until McDonalds came along, the verb 'to love' just wasn't used in the present continuous. It's hideous (and incorrect). I love.

turquoise · 23/02/2008 11:24

Unreasonable to be annoyed by it's use on mn.

Not unreasonable to be annoyed by americanisms generally - the ones I can't abide are the baby language used by adults: "that's a no-no", "I got a boo-boo on my finger".

Barf (an americanism I like )

belgo · 23/02/2008 11:24

oh I agree entirely ernest , I detest 'I'm loving' and 'I am really liking'

It just sounds so fashionable, as though someone is trying to sound 'cool'

turquoise · 23/02/2008 11:25

Oh god yes "I'm loving" - only used by tossers IMO.

belgo · 23/02/2008 11:25

my american friend says 'That's a no-no' - is it allowed if you are american?

turquoise · 23/02/2008 11:26

Not by me .
Don't care if I'm unreasonable.

pukkapatch · 23/02/2008 11:27

yes you are being unreasonable.
i was brought up using american english. and in my o-level english language and literature paper i was allowed to use it. as long as i was consistent. ie, if i spelled color, then i had to spell mom, not mum.
if its good enoguh for the olevel examiners, its good enough for mumsnet

ernest · 23/02/2008 11:32

bet even 'o' level examiners wouldn't accept I'm loving..I'm liking etc

belgo · 23/02/2008 11:33

but I wonder if GCSE examiners do?

ernest · 23/02/2008 11:34

good point. probably
