50th-Glastonbury, USA road trip or Hawaii?

I’m 45 but planning now šŸ˜…

Which would you choose out of the three?
Our daughter will be with us and will be 10/11 by then.

Glastonbury: Never been before, always wanted to go, have been to many other festivals, adore music. We’d combine this with a trip to Europe somewhere-one of the lakes in Italy maybe or Iceland.

USA-California, L.A fly drive-never been before, only New York. Would love to have adventures, road tripping and visit where they filmed E.T šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‚

Hawaii: Dh surfs, we’ve always wanted to go-extended trip-3 plus weeks, total chill in a quieter area, swimming and surfing.

I have zero money for any of this šŸ˜‚but plan on saving…which would you choose out of these three?

And what would be your ultimate 50th celebration?

@SunshinyDay1 so much! In San Diego area we did the zoo, the aquarium at La Jolla, rode a Surrey bike around Coronado Island, did a tram tour, visited the Old Town. We also went over Halloween, so dressed up and joined in the trick and treating along the high street on Coronado Island. Also, Legoland, San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

In LA area we did Disneyland, California Adventure, La Brea Tar Pits, went dolphin watching on a boat out of Dana Point.

On Kauai we did a helicopter ride, spent time at the beach with turtles and seals, went to a luau, visited the canyons and other sites of the island.

Hawaii for sure - sounds amazing. Lots of 10 year olds would not enjoy Glastonbury (also you possibly wouldn't either with a child in tow!). Also kids get bored in cars, so too much driving is not the best.

I've never been to Hawaii but would love to go. Tacking on a few days in California at one end or the other would be easy enough.

I went to Glastonbury in my late teens and early 20s and could not cope with it now as a full grown up. Happy to watch on the telly.

Did a California road trip years ago with my sister and it was brilliant, we had a fab time. All the cliches of the movies, giant pancakes in diners, motels, interesting people spilling their life stories in bars....

Could I easily combine the LA road trip
with Hawaii? How much time would we need to take in total to really enjoy it all?

I did this in 2012 ( so factor in price increases )
Flew to New York. Road trip around New England for 4 nights. One night Niagara Falls. 2 nights Honolulu ( before and after 7 nights NCL cruise around all islands )
Then flew to LA Disney Grand Californian hotel 4 nights and 3 nights in Vegas - Bellagio
3.5 weeks
Cost about £25, 000. Me and my two boys who were 13 and 16 at the time.

They loved it
I also love San Fran but not enough to add in that as well

You can’t be certain you will even get Glastonbury tickets loads of my friends who usually go couldn’t get them this year.

Ohidunnodoi · 26/06/2023 19:58

@Densol57 25,000?! Yikes wasn’t anticipating it being that much

Hawaii is amazing but note LA+Hawaii is very very expensive. I found it vastly more expensive than any European holidays.

Ive named the hotels as they are $500 plus a night and you wouldnt need to stay in those for example. Also flying over to Hawaii and back is almost the same as flights UK to USA - so I think it was £4,000 ish on flights alone ( and that was when the dollar was weaker to the pound - so we got more )

For DH's 50th he wanted to see the Grand Canyon. We were due to fly to Vegas and start a road trip from there, but flight was cancelled so we flew to New York and had a day in New York (which we MUCH preferred to Vegas), then flew to Vegas and drove to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Monument Valley National Park, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon, then the old Route 66 (that's cool) back to Vegas. Flew to LA and had a few days there - did Disney, which kept our 10 yr old DD happy and meant she was willing to do all the hikes we wanted to do in the National Parks. It was DH's choice of holiday rather than mine, but I loved it. Especially loved Zion & Bryce National Parks.

Ohidunnodoi · 26/06/2023 20:09

@Grumpy101 What sort of price would you say for 1 week road trip, then two go Hawaii for example?

Out of those three, Glastonbury. There's no way I would go to America at the moment.

Ohidunnodoi · 26/06/2023 20:11

Not massively keen to see Vegas really but loving the thought of California then Hawaii, I just hope it’s not *Too expensive šŸ™

Hawaii. Went for a once in a lifetime trip and have been back 8 times! Stop in LA on the way back but avoid San Francisco, I used to love the city but it is not a place to be now.

I don’t do crowds, tents or mud so Glastonbury has no appeal.

Ohidunnodoi · 26/06/2023 20:20

@Onthegrid Wow! What do you love about it, which parts did you go to? So want to go

Hawaii without a doubt. I've done a big American road trip, it was good but it's not very relaxing.

You have to pack and partially unpack each day and you spend hours on the road. It's a great way to pack in lots of sightseeing but you need another holiday when you get home.

I didn't really enjoy Las Vegas and wasn't a huge fan of California. Santa Monica was pretty but I believe it's less so now.

continentallentil · 26/06/2023 23:36

Hawaii

Road Trips and Glasto not best suited to 10 year old, and you do NOT want a rainy 50th at Glasto, it’s massive and when it’s muddy it’s freaking exhausting

Pottedpalm · 26/06/2023 23:40

California. We did a road trip when the DTs were teenagers. San Diego to San Francisco, it was indeed the trip of a lifetime. We stayed in a real mix of hotels, from Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica to a Ho Jo with a ā€˜pool’ the size of a car tyre. Visited Alcatraz, Santa Barbara, Monterey, LA, La Jolla, Palm Springs… would love to do it all again.

Why not? America no worse now than it's ever been.

I'd go to Hawaii, I've done the other two and they were great but omg I'd love to go to Hawaii. Even the name is wonderful 😊

Agree!! Can't choose the weather at Glastonbury and you'd never like the same things. Imagine if it was say Stormzy headlining and you were happy to stand for 8 hours to be near the front, no way your 10 year old could cope with that..

I wouldn't go to Hawaii because they are struggling with the amount of tourists they are getting post-COVID. The infrastructure isn't coping, and the people that live there are paying the price for that. I don't want to be part of the problem.

I wouldn't go to lots of the rest of the US post the repeal of Roe Vs Wade, and how that is affecting women.

I'm sure there are places that would be ok to go to - but I'm not interested enough in going to figure that out.

FanFanBam · 27/06/2023 00:18

I don’t think Glastonbury is a viable plan because you can’t guarantee you’ll get tickets. It’s incredibly difficult, we only managed it once in many times of trying.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/06/2023 00:27

I think for ages I’d go with Hawaii. Lots to do many islands to visit but maybe more expensive.

No on the LA trip. CA is a bit of a shitshow atm. No way would I go to SFC right now unless you enjoy beggars and drug addicts.

Glasto, never been so can’t comment but probably wouldn’t want to take a young one.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/06/2023 00:28

Besides the surfing what are you guys into?
