To not bother going to my new job tomorrow?

Helmhun · 25/06/2023 23:10

So I recently lost my job, i’ve been applying and interviewing like a crazy woman.
I have been offered a job, which includes working weekends which is less than ideal because i’m a single parent to 2 kids, I would be relying on family to make it work ( not the most reliable)

I accepted the job knowing I wouldn’t be staying long but I needed the money. However i’ve been offered another job with perfect hours, more money and no working weekends which is what I wanted. The start date to this perfect job however is 3 weeks away so i could technically work the first job to earn some money. However it feels quite pointless, I’m on universal credit so i’m sure that would mess up somewhere.

What do i do? I hate letting people down, i have signed a contract that states I need to give a weeks notice.

I think as you've signed a contract it would be best to go in and hand in your notice, explaining the situation

Happytohelp2 · 25/06/2023 23:14

If you hate letting people down then you should go to the job. It’ll make you feel better about yourself. Self respect and personal values are important, if sometimes inconvenient.

Justchooseone · 25/06/2023 23:14

It’s a shame it’s tomorrow as it gives them no notice, but I imagine you wouldn’t be very productive this week anyway as you’d be learning the ropes. I think you should ring them tomorrow and explain as you’ll just be wasting everyone’s time otherwise. Good luck in the other new job!!

Hippydippydipchip · 25/06/2023 23:14

I wouldn’t bother going in.

CheckEngineLight · 25/06/2023 23:15

Go, make a couple of weeks money whilst you work your notice.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/06/2023 23:16

Don’t go it’s a waste of their time.

CrapBucket · 25/06/2023 23:16

I would go in, imagine if in future they had a job going that you wanted and you would regret leaving them in the lurch.

MsMcGonagall · 25/06/2023 23:16

I would think that the first thing the tomorrow-job would need to do is to train you up/ give some induction. So don't waste their time. Start with as polite an explanation as you can manage that unfortunately another job you were applying to at the same time has offered you a job, it is better conditions, and sorry to let them down. Either go in person and say it straight away, or ring them at 9am.

Unless this is a job that requires very little induction I can't believe they will really want you to work 1 week. If they really do, I guess you can do it!

Findyourneutralspace · 25/06/2023 23:16

I’d ring in the morning and explain. Don’t just do a no show. Tell them you will be giving them a week’s notice, u fortunate timing etc and ask if they want you to work your notice period. They’ll probably tell you not to bother but at least you’ll have done the right thing.

FanFanBam · 25/06/2023 23:18

Fair enough, I can see why you don’t want to start the new job. But don’t no-show - that truly is a dick move.

Helmhun · 25/06/2023 23:18

I was thinking to go but i’m also worried if that will mess up either my tax or uc! Or both?!

On one hand I don’t want to waste their time but I also don’t want to let them down (which I will be anyway)

I’ve also not received a formal offer yet for the second job, just a phone call and with confirmation to come tomorrow in regards to start dates.

Arghh I never thought i’d be in this position

landahoyss · 25/06/2023 23:19

Don't go if it messes up uc. Put yourself first but call them to let them know.

Helmhun · 25/06/2023 23:20

I wouldn’t do a no show, I will call in the morning and explain and offer to work the notice just in case.

I know its a couple of weeks training so it would hardly be work but still seems like a lot of headache to find childcare for no reason

SisterWedge · 25/06/2023 23:20

I wouldn't go. It'll be a waste of their time training you and a weird couple of weeks for you as you work your notice. Ring them and explain in the morning.

Backstreets · 25/06/2023 23:21

Call and explain the situation. What, they’re gonna train you to do the job for a week and then you go away? Waste of time.

Dotcheck · 25/06/2023 23:21

For heavens sake at least let them know.

People can relate to getting a better job with more favourable t&cs but it’s hard to understand someone just being an asshole.

Also, these things have a way of biting you on your ass when you least expect it. Keep your professional reputation spotless.

hungryh1ppo · 25/06/2023 23:21

Call and tell them. They probably would rather not bother training you for you to just leave and then you can prepare for the perfect job with a clear conscience

If you don’t have a signed contract for the second job, DONT give up the first job yet!

The second job could fall through and you’ll have nothing.

Don't say anything to the first job until you have a signed contract for the second.

Go to work as normal, follow the training. IF you get a contract then put your notice in.

Thisisthedawningoftheageofaquarius · 25/06/2023 23:22

I’d call and explain I’m sure it’s not the first time - they will understand
vrst of luck with new role!

I was going to say this. I’d apologise for any inconvenience I’d caused too. Leave the best impression of yourself you can.

Yes this, please wait for a contract before you do anything

JudgeRudy · 25/06/2023 23:23

It really depends what the job is. If it's something you can just get on with I'd be inclined to be prepared to work. I would however be hoping that they said not to bother.

If it's something a bit more meaty where you'll need a settling in period and some training I think I'd actually suggest that you presume they don't want you to start. This could actually make someone else's day because their 2nd choice of candidate might still be available and delighted to take them up on their offer.
I'd have sent an email ASAP as often staff read these outside of work hours and you could have got a lovely reply saying don't bother. As it is, you really ought turn up on day one.
Congratulations BTW.

Teabutnotasweknowit · 25/06/2023 23:23

If you haven't received your formal offer yet, it would be foolish to not turn up tomorrow. Don't hand in your notice until you've been formally offered and accepted your new role.

Cakeorchocolate · 25/06/2023 23:23

Without a formal offer from the second it would be wise to continue with the first for now. If you get the formal offer tomorrow, you can speak to the first job Tuesday, explain that you're willing to give a weeks notice but you would hate to waste their time training you and so could you agree to waive the notice period and part ways with immediate effect.

MinimalistMe · 25/06/2023 23:24

I wouldn't bother going in and yes it'll mess up your UC
