Stores that want your email

I shop online and use my email for this obviously. I also use an H&M club member app and am paper free there, all good.

But shops like New look and Claires want you to tell the cashier your email address loudly in front of the whole queue of people so that they can send you an email receipt. I like email receipts but do not wish to share my personal email address os publicly. They're only allowed to ask people over 18 and New Look staff are getting quite rude now when I say I prefer to have a paper receipt.

AIBU to prefer using an app with a bar code for paperless rather than telling random people and fellow shoppers my email address, for all in the store to hear?

What are people's views on this, it seems like such a clunky way of going about paperless. Really irritating.

They want your email so they can send you marketing crap.
I say no when asked and I get a paper receipt.

Jemimapinotduck · 25/06/2023 22:41

They can only sign you up to receive marketing crap if you explicitly agree. Many of these people like me are only doing they're job, we get abused by SOME customers for daring to ask but get bollocked by our bosses if we don't. We can't win 🤷🏻‍♀️

HerVagestyTheQueef · 25/06/2023 22:42

I just look a bit confused and dopey, and say “Sorry, I don’t have one”.

Theres no arguing with that!

QueSyrahSyrah · 25/06/2023 22:44

I have something like [email protected] and that is separate to my usual personal email.

A 5 minute faff to set up but there's only going to be more shops going this way.

purpleme12 · 25/06/2023 22:45

I just say I want a paper one each time.
No one's been bothered.
Not that much of a problem

Hbh17 · 25/06/2023 22:48

I just say "you don't need my email address to sell me this item" and then the sale carries on as normal. It's ridiculous asking people to give out personal information in a public place, so I simply don't do it.

BiscuitsandPuffin · 25/06/2023 22:49

Yeah I always refuse them. It's excessive data collection which is totally unnecessary and I can't wait for someone to make a GDPR complaint about it.

Fleur405 · 25/06/2023 22:49

I just say no thank you!

Bromptotoo · 25/06/2023 22:50

I gave it to Halfords once so they could email me the receipt.

Sure, they sent the receipt but the also carpet bombed me with emails about 'deals' etc. several times a day until my 'unsubscribe' request cut in.

Now I just say no. If it's something that crosses a threshold for cost and durability then I'll take the paper doings from the till. If it's screenwash, car polish or whatever that's just going to be used then I tell them not to bother printing it.

Such a clever idea. And then you have all your receipts together if you need them.

Stickybackplasticbear · 25/06/2023 22:52

You can't be serious? Wtf do you think is gonna happen? This can't be real. If it is I'm embarrassed.

MsFogi · 25/06/2023 22:55

Nope unless they are offering me £5/10 off or a decent percentage off I say ‘No thanks the paper receipt is fine’ in a jolly way and it is always fine. If they want my I do they can pay for it.

ItsBritneyBitchhhh · 25/06/2023 22:57

‘Can I get a paper receipt instead pls?’

They’re not going to chase you out of the shop shouting because you didn’t provide your email address. This is a non issue, come on now

INeedAnotherName · 25/06/2023 22:59

Just say no thank you but I want the normal one.

My DH once gave (or they wrote down) the wrong email and he never got the email receipt. Of course the item failed but he couldn't take it back because he had no proof of purchase 🙄

Flowerblooms · 25/06/2023 23:04

I had this in New Look before Christmas, I had waited in the queue for half an hour as it was listening to people spell their email addresses out to the sales girl behind the counter I just wanted to pay and leave as quickly as possible. I said I wanted a paper receipt when I was asked for my email, the sales assistant then went on about how email receipts were better for reasons she started to list. I again stated I wanted a paper receipt she huffed and puffed and shook her head as she printed mine off.
I have not shopped in there since.

Scaraben · 25/06/2023 23:10

I just ask for a paper one, it hasn't been a problem anywhere so far.

I don't really mind emailed receipts but my email address is my full name including a middle name no one seems to know how to spell, which causes faff in shops. It's 20 years old so I don't want a new one. But is from a time when you had to say it out loud a hell of a lot less!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 25/06/2023 23:10

I usually respond with “Oh No Thank You”. It’s weird enough and just outside of context that it knocks them off their script. After the strange look they give me they typically just move on.

fetchacloth · 25/06/2023 23:12

I find it annoying to be asked that in store as I feel it's a breach of privacy.
For the more persistent cashiers I say that I already receive emails from your company so you already have that info anyway. End of convo 🙄

DappledThings · 25/06/2023 23:14

It doesn't need any explanation. They usually phrase it as "do you have an email address I can take for your reciept?". I iist say a polite "No". Because I don't. I have an email address, it isn't one I'm going to let them use so it's "no" and they move on

Although it is a bit different for OP who actually does want the emails just not to give out her email address in front of people. There's a miniscule chance someone else in the queue will, hear it clearly, remember it after one hearing, be someone who is deliberately hanging around shops to gather email addresses and be someone who has a nefarious use for said email addresses.

I’d internally eyeroll if someone said this to me.

Employees don’t have a choice in the matter and are expected in some places to have above a certain percentage of them given for the week.

Just say “no thank you or a paper one please”.

If it’s such a bother to you, complain to the company instead of taking out your annoyance on the retail staff.

Bournetilly · 25/06/2023 23:39

YANBU and it takes longer than printing a paper receipt.
Just say please can I get a paper receipt instead.

Tinkerbyebye · 25/06/2023 23:55

Dunelm used to do this, ask for email, but when I went in this week it’s back to paper receipts. Ihave a email I use just for these

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/06/2023 23:59

I just say no can I have a paper receipt please. I refuse all marketing emails whether buying online or in store. Don't want them, don't need them. They just clutter up my inbox that I spent ages in registering from stuff I didn't realise I had registered for.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/06/2023 00:00

I set up a specific email for this with gmail four years ago - always surprised when people say it's clever or sensible in shops when I give it (it's very clearly a receipts one). It seems obvious that having them all in one place and only on one device is a good idea.

Underminer · 26/06/2023 00:02

My sister makes one up, I have heard arsebiscuit@ fireyflaps@ legendarydildo@ tittymctitface@ and hairyarsedbuilder@
Doesn’t always do it but it gets a chuckle from the staff if they have had a chat before.

I just say no thanks, paper works for me.
