How far would you go to accommodate a vegan?

In a few weeks we're hosting a bbq for my Husband's birthday.

We have about a dozen guests coming, one of whom is vegan. As we don't normally buy vegan food I've started looking at what we'd normally buy and what is and isn't vegan. To make sure the vegan has the same variety of choice as everyone else I'm going to have to spend quite a bit on alternatives. As we have the non vegan alternatives we won't be eating the vegan versions, so they'll either go home with the guest or be thrown.

How much would you accommodate a vegan?

Would I be unreasonable to provide vegan burger with vegan cheese, plus bun and nothing else or do I need to go the whole hog and get vegan sausages, vegan condiments and vegan coleslaw?

Ps they are vegan by choice, not for medical reasons

No advice really but please don't do a vegan only bbq as suggested on here. You've only got 1 vegan guest out of 12.

Why not? Vegan burgers and sausages have come a long way from the bean burgers of years ago! Linda Mc mozzarella burgers are amazing as are Richmond and Cauldron sausages. Vegetables done on the BBQ are delicious

RosyDawn · 25/06/2023 00:39

Vegan mayonnaise is really nice so you could just use that to make any relevant salads (potato, coleslaw) that both the vegan and the non-vegan can eat.

As this is Mumsnet, you should definitely do a massive salad.

There are twelve guests, what will they do with all the extra rotisserie chicken if the vegan won’t eat it? There will be tonnes leftover…

almostoverthehill · 25/06/2023 00:40

Sorry the Linda Mc mozzarella ones aren’t vegan cheese

I agree, there's some amazing vegan burgers out there (just don't mention the V word and people tend to love them lol)
Having a fully vegan bbq though, a lot of people still want meat and feel.cheated if they don't get any.
So think there should be options for both

Lots of my friends are meat eaters who come to my barbecues happily and eat the vegan sausages and burgers at our barbecues - they love the plant kitchen Marks @ Spencer vegan brand of burgers and sausages ! I am veggie but get a mix of vegan and vegetarian options - no meat😀

I'd rather shit glass and clap than eat fake meat. I'd rather eat a proper sausage 😋

Dintananadinta · 25/06/2023 00:45

I would make an effort because they are a guest but that's just me. some vegan dishes you can do:
potato salad-use vegan Mayo, hellmans is good
coleslaw-again using vegan mayo
veg kebabs with tofu
corn on cob
vegan sausages/burgers
sides-Houmous,olives, crisps, bread

BodgerLovesMashedPotato · 25/06/2023 00:47

Just quoted that and yes the mozzarella burgers are vegetarian not vegan
My favourite vegan burgers are the Beyond burgers, very "meaty" tasting

Clearly you are bit grim, I won’t go on about animal welfare as it will be lost on you

Good for you?
I'm a meat eater but love vegan alternatives too as don't like eating too much meat.
So fake meat is great for me as I get the taste but not the thought of eating animals when I do

Yes I’ve had them too they are very good!

SomePeopleAreNice · 25/06/2023 00:53

He's a friend you've invited to come to your house, why can't you just ask him?

SkyAboveSoBlue · 25/06/2023 00:54

My family can’t tell the difference between vegan mayo and the other stuff. I bet all the vegan stuff is gone by the end of the BBQ as a lot of meat eaters always have some of that too.

sausage767 · 25/06/2023 00:56

All the posters on here who wouldn’t eat ‘fake meat’ but happily eat supermarket sausages. Ehrmmm….

Exactly OPs guests may enjoy the experience and an introduction to meat-free food/recipes. Is it really the end of the world to not have a chicken leg for one day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Butchers actually! And nothing wrong with some supermarket ones.

You mean vegetarians?
IME vegans tend to range from the genuine to faddy (who want meat substitutes, don't actually like veggies but just think it's cool) so I'd just let them know what I'm buying that's easy. If they don't like it they can bring their own.

I'm often vegetarian for religious reasons and happy to bring my own food. I don't expect people to put themselves out for me and I expect the same courtesy...

No, I mean vegans.

Surely that's not news to you?

And probably loads of processed foods. But suddenly their body is a temple for these threads. 😂

And the fact so many love animals but seem to hate vegans on here.

Make it make sense.

Again I won’t go on about the animal welfare aspect because that’s obvious. Don’t you think there’s something very unappealing about eating a pigs snout, bollocks and any other body part that they can scrape up to put into the sausages?

I can definitely tell the difference. I've grown up on proper amazing homemade meals. All meat. Probably because my dad's a butcher. Don't get me wrong I love a salad but I need meat at a bbq. It isn't a bbq without it.

This is an interesting one....I know this is going to get people's backs up.... but I don't go very far to accommodate vegans now, because all the vegans that I know, never, EVER attempt to accommodate me. They don't even buy like, a pack of chocolate biscuits in or anything I may like. I have to take my own snacks/food to their house because they don't buy fuck all for me..., Yet I'm expected to provide for them being vegans.

I've provided for them for the last 5 or 6 years, but about 9 months ago, I decided to stop and just get take out now when they come (or a prepared ready meal,) because I'm not going to get special vegan food in and soy milk and cook and prepare different food - when they can't be fucked to do it for me.

Some people say 'oh, but it's their belief..!!! They simply CAN'T go against it.' Yeah sure! Hmm. Not all but SOME vegans I know/know of are utterly insufferable and arrogant. Want everything their own way, but won't bend an INCH for anyone else.

So they don’t give you any food? What would you like them to accomodate? Do you NEED to eat meat and dairy products at every snack? Surely they provide you with food? Which by definition is suitable for your dietary requirements
i can’t imagine you have many vegan friends with that attitude

Nope definitely not. I've grown up on proper meat as I've said before my dad's a butchers. And that's not how all sausages are made. You clearly have no clue.

RocketIceLollie · 25/06/2023 01:04

Just ask them what they like. I imagine they will probably suggest they just bring their own food for the BBQ if you initiate such conversation. No point trying to second guess them when you could have the conversation straight up beforehand.
